Definitions
- the present invention relates to a greetings card assembly adapted to hold a gift and particularly, but not exclusively, to a greetings card assembly adapted to hold a compact disc (CD) or DVD.
- CD compact disc
- Greetings cards are, of course, well known and take many forms. Most greetings cards comprise a sheet of cardboard folded in half, the outside surface of the folded card carries a design and the inside surface carries a message.
- a wide variety of gift boxes are also known, and examples of prior art gift card and box assemblies include the likes of WO 00/02737, GB 2339420, GB 2241470, GB 2275891, US 5188230, US 4360106, US 4291807, EP 0220827, and US 4828105.
- packages of the likes of WO 00/02737 which incorporate a box for the storage of e.g. a CD with a separable gift card are somewhat large and this results in a number of substantial disadvantages.
- their size means that only a small number of them can be stored on a given amount of shelf space.
- Their size also means that their storage, shipping and handling costs are substantially increased. This results in a large unit cost which is passed onto the consumer.
- the present invention seeks to overcome the prior art disadvantages.
- a greetings card assembly comprising a box for receiving an article, a greetings card joined to said box and a line of weakness between said box and said greetings card to enable said greetings card to be easily detached from said box, said box having a front, a back and a plurality of side walls, each of said side walls of said box having a generally central fold line such that each of said side walls can be folded along said fold lines such that said box part of said greetings card assembly is compressible.
- the box By providing for the side walls of the box to fold along the fold lines, the box can be flattened. This allows for the greetings card assembly to be manufactured and transported in a flat form, meaning that the number of units which can fit in a given space is greater than can be achieved with existing greetings card assemblies. This can reduce manufacturing, storage and transportation costs. It also allows more units to be stored in a given amount of shelf space in shops. It also makes the greetings card assembly more convenient and attractive to consumers. In addition, by providing the box in a flat form, the box cannot be damaged by crushing either during transport or storage or in shops, reducing wastage.
- the fold lines on the side walls of the box can be provided in the form of scored or thinned sections of the walls. Alternatively, they can be provided in the form of perforations. This enables the box to be manufactured using a stamp to define the lines of weakness.
- the box is typically rectangular in shape, although of course other shapes are possible.
- Each of the side walls may be shaped such that they can fold inwards along the fold lines without interfering with the folding of the adjacent side walls along their fold lines. This may be achieved by manufacturing the box such that the side walls are not continuous with one another, and particularly by shaping the ends of each of the side walls adjacent other side walls such that they do not interfere with the folding of one another.
- the ends of the side walls may be V-shaped.
- the corners of the front and the back of the box may be rounded or otherwise shaped such that they define a smaller shape than that which would result if their sides were straight.
- the sides of the front and back may not be continuous with the whole of the side walls.
- a rectangular box according to the present invention has front and back walls and top, bottom, left and right side walls, none of said side walls being continuous with one another, and has for its right side wall a flap extending to define a greetings card having first and second portions, a fold line separating said first and second greetings card portions, said greetings card being joined to said right side wall by a line of weakness, said top, bottom and left side walls having fold lines along their length, and each of the ends of the top, bottom and left side walls adjacent another of the ends of the top, bottom and left side walls being shaped such that they do not interfere with the folding of one another.
- a gift may be placed in the box and a message written in the card which may carry a design or wording related to the gift.
- the card may be detached from the box for separate display.
- the box may then be used in the conventional manner to store the gift.
- the card may be first detached from the box, the line of weakness joining the card and the box being broken to provide a flap which is then folded over and tucked in to provide an additional side wall to the box, allowing it to be closed.
- the box is preferably dimensioned to receive a CD or DVD either on its own or in a case.
- the box preferably contains a CD or DVD or an article of similar dimensions.
- the box may of course be dimensioned so as to be able to receive other articles such as for example video cassettes.
- the greetings card is preferably formed integrally with the box. More preferably the entire assembly is formed from a single sheet of foldable material, for example cardboard.
- the greetings card preferably comprises a sheet of foldable material which may have one or more folds therein.
- the line of weakness between the box and the greetings card preferably comprises perforations to enable the greetings card to be easily detached from the box.
- the line of weakness could, however, be formed otherwise, for example by scoring.
- the assembly comprises a slim generally rectangular, particularly square, cardboard box for receiving a CD or DVD.
- the greetings card is formed from a flap extending from the box.
- the flap includes two folds.
- the first fold is perforated and formed near the box. This fold is arranged so that the greetings card may be folded so as to overlie the box.
- the perforations allow the greetings card to be easily detached from the box.
- the second fold is formed midway between the first fold and the edge of the flap and allows the part of the flap which extends from the first fold, away from the box, to be folded over on itself in the manner of a conventional greetings card. Both the outside of the box and the flap are printed or otherwise decorated.
- a blank of foldable sheet material for a greetings card assembly comprising a first portion adapted to be folded to form a box and a second greetings card portion wherein a line of weakness is formed between the first and second portions to enable them to be easily separated.
- the second portion preferably comprises a greetings card.
- the sheet material preferably comprises cardboard.
- the line of weakness preferably comprises perforations but could be formed by any other suitable technique.
- At least one side of the blank is printed.
- the blank is generally L-shaped and includes four similarly sized panels. Some of the larger panels are separated by smaller panels. Perforations run between two adjacent panels.
- the blank is generally cross shaped.
- Blanks may be sold to consumers for self assembly. Blanks for prior art greetings card assemblies comprising a box and detachable card are particular convenient as they take up less room in e.g. retail premises than assembled boxes. However, although useful, that is not particularly the case with the present invention, at least not to the same extent - boxes of the present invention can be sold in assembled form without their requiring large amounts of retail space. Blanks may be printed and/or otherwise decorated before assembly.
- FIG. 1 shows a plan view of a first blank for forming a greetings card assembly of the present invention.
- Greetings card assembly blank 10 is generally comprised of four panels 20, 30, 40 and 50. Panels 20 and 30 are of the same size and form the greetings card portion 70 of assembly 10, and can be folded along scored fold line 60 to define front side 20 and rear side 30 of greetings card 70.
- Greetings card 70 can be detached from the rest of greetings card assembly blank 10 by detaching it along perforated tear line 80 which, when the greetings card portion 70 is not detached, acts as a fold line.
- Panels 40 and 50 are of generally the same size and dimensions as panels 20 and 30.
- Panel 40 forms the rear panel of box part 90 of the fully assembled greetings card assembly 10.
- Panel 50 forms the front part of box 90.
- Fold lines 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150 and 160 are also provided to help in the folding of blank 10 into completed box 90.
- the completed box 90 is compressible and this is achieved by means of perforated fold lines 170, 180, 190, 200, 210 and 220.
- box 90 adhesive is applied to side panels 230, 240 and panel 50 folded over panel 40 such that panels 230, 240 adhere to panel 40.
- Box 90 is now complete other than for a right side wall. This is provided by side panel 250 being folded over the side of box 90.
- Greetings card portion 70 can then be folded on top of front panel 50 to form a greetings card and box arrangement.
- Compression of box 90 is also aided by the modifications made to the various corners and ends of the sides of the panels of greetings card arrangement 10. As can be seen at points 260, 270, 280, 290, 300, 310, 320, 330, 340, 350, 360, 370, 380, 390, 400 and 410, the corners of panels and sides are nicked to reduce their size. This aids the compression of box 90.
- Panels 40 and 50 can be decorated, as can panels 20 and 30 to provide whichever greetings, images, logos or other designs or messages are desired.
- Decoration can of course be by means of printing, stamping, marking by hand or otherwise, and can be on either one or both of the sides of each of the panels.
- the greetings card arrangement 10 is manufactured and packaged ready for use, with side panels 240, 250 adhered to panel 40. Greetings card arrangements 10 are stored flat-packed with the greetings card portion 70 front-most so that it appeals to the eye of consumers.
- a consumer can then fold back greetings card 70 to open right side wall 250 and allow access to the inside of box 90.
- a CD, DVD or other gift can then be inserted into box 90, causing it to expand.
- the greetings card 70 can then be re-folded over box 90, right side wall 250 covering the opening into box 90 and the greetings card arrangement containing the gift can then be given to a recipient.
- the recipient can detach card 70 from box 90 by tearing along perforated tear line 80 - card 70 can then be put on display whilst the gift is retained, safely stored in box 90.
- right side wall 250 is further elongated with an additional flap section 500 which separates box 90 from greetings card 70, perforated tear line 80 being located at the card 70 side of additional flap section 500.
- flap section 500 Upon tearing of tear line 80, flap section 500 extends from side wall 250 and is folded in to the open right side of box 90 to close it.
- the greetings card arrangements of the present invention can also be provided with e.g. regions defining hanging tags and suchlike, as is well known in the art.
