Definitions
- the present invention relates to an intravenous catheter of the type commonly used in nursing to install flexible entry-exit routes in the veins of patients; With this catheter remarkable advantages are achieved in relation to the catheters that are used today.
- the improvements mainly affect the economy, simplification of the installation and safety for health professionals since it does not leave blood-contaminated waste, as is the case with current catheters that dispose of a potentially dangerous needle due to having been in contact with the patient's blood.
- Garc ⁇ a Andreo has designed the auto-valve flow regulator intravenous catheter, easy and quick to install, which integrates in a very compact and small device all the necessary mechanisms to install, in complete safety, a line flexible in the patient's vein with an automatic valve and a precise built-in flow regulator, without blood loss or waste contaminated with it, such as needles or other waste, these characteristics being the object of the present invention.
- the self-valve flow regulator intravenous catheter is of the flexible tube catheter type, used in nursing to install entry-exit routes in the veins of patients. These catheters have a thin flexible tube that ends in a pointed shape, and inside which is housed a metallic needle, slightly longer than the flexible tube, which once punctured the vein is discarded and the flexible tube is inserted into the vein of the patient, to regulate the inflow of the serum coupled to the catheter, a device is used that presses the conduit of the same.
- the present invention is mainly characterized by the fact that the metallic needle that punctures the patient's vein is very short and once the catheter is installed, it is housed inside the patient's chamber, without having to be removed, also exercising the functions of a self-valve and regulator. flow. It prevents the flow of blood to the outside, automatically opening or closing the line by coupling devices such as syringes, serums or others to the catheter and precisely controls the flow of fluids through the catheter.
- the catheter is made up of two cylindrical chambers inserted one inside the other and that can rotate with each other half a turn, the flexible tube of the catheter is attached to the first chamber and extends inside it, up to approximately half, it has a groove on its back that reaches almost half its diameter.
- the needle which is very short, is sealed at its back, has a slot equal to that of the tube that houses it, and an anchoring system to house a thin rod of resistant material, which is responsible for once the prick, move the needle to its final position, where it is held by a clamp that can only be moved longitudinally and that keeps it in the stable position in which the grooves do not coincide and therefore the valve is closed.
- the clamp together with the needle move forward until their slot coincides with that of the flexible tube; in this way the fluid passage is open, a spring that can be a spring, fine flexible sheets or the like, is in charge of moving the clamp back with the needle to its resting position once the serum syringe or attached device has been removed.
- the flow regulator function is performed by rotating the chamber to which the flexible tube is attached, from zero to one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to the chamber containing the needle, thus regulating the coincidence of the grooves, and by both the fluid flow, zero to one hundred percent.
- the catheter has standard dimensions so that existing devices on the market can be attached.
- a stopper is incorporated in the back, which will serve to leave the route covered when not in use.
- FIG. 1 is an elevation view of the catheter ready for use, as it would be at the end of the manufacturing process.
- Figure 2 is a representation of how the catheter would be installed in the patient's vein, once the puncture has been made and the rod has been pulled back to lodge the needle in the clamp, leaving the valve closed and later discarded. the rod and placed the plug.
- Figure 3 represents the catheter with an attached serum device, the displacement of the clamp with the needle and the automatic opening of the valve can be seen.
- Figure 4 depicts the catheter with a device attached and the valve open only approximately 50% by rotation between the two chambers of the catheter.
- the essential characteristics of the present invention consist in that the catheter is made up of two cylindrical chambers (1) and (2) made of hard plastic material that are mounted one inside the other and that can rotate half a turn with each other, the back of the flexible tube (8) is inserted into the chamber (2) and has a slot (10) that occupies half of its diameter; the metallic needle (3) that moves inside the flexible tube (8) is very short, it is sealed at the back and has a groove (12) to fit in the clamp (4), which can only be moved in longitudinal direction, and a slot (11) equal to that of the flexible tube.
- a thin rod (6) of resistant material and non-cylindrical shape to prevent it from rotating, is attached to the back of the needle, only by pressure or the like, so that once the puncture is made, it serves to move the needle to its definitive location and then it can be easily released, being lodged in the clamp (4) which, by the action of the spring (7), is kept in the stable position of the closed valve; once the needle is anchored at that point, the rod (6) is released by pulling or turning from the rear of the needle, also releasing the plug (14), which is attached to the rod at its rear. This plug is placed on the catheter to ensure asepsis while it is not being used. The rod is discarded through normal channels, since it has not been in contact with the patient's blood and does not represent any danger.
- the chamber (1) that houses the clamp with the needle can rotate half a turn with respect to the chamber (2) to which the flexible tube is attached, in this way, the passage of liquids can be regulated continuously from zero to one hundred percent; the chamber (2) has a numbering engraved so that an indicator engraved on the chamber (1) indicates the degree of valve opening. In the manufacturing process, this regulation would be in the zero position, so that the valve is never open while the needle moves to its final position. From all that has been described and from the observation of the drawings, the advantages of the self-valve flow regulator intravenous catheter can be derived, with respect to other previous embodiments.
- this catheter ensures that at no time, during installation or later during its handling, will they be in contact with the patient's blood (potentially dangerous because it can spread diseases) Nor does it leave dangerous residues, such as the needles contaminated with patient's blood left by current devices.
- the quick and easy installation of this catheter since all the elements are included in a single device and the flow regulation is done very precisely. The installation is reduced to making the puncture, pulling the rod (6) back, releasing and inserting the plug; what its puts a considerable saving in the installation time with respect to the current mechanisms.
