Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 入力された画像データに基づいて、 各画素領域に形成されるべきドットのサ ィズを決定するドットサイズ決定部 （1， 1 A, 1 B) と、
該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 , 1 A, 1 B ) にて決定されたサイズのドットを、 そのドットに対応する画素領域に形成することにより、 多階調の画像を形成する 画像形成部 （2 ) と、
該ドットサイズ決定部 （1， 1 A, 1 B ) において、 隣接する画素領域に、 所 定範囲内のサイズで且つ同一サイズのドットを連続的に配置するようにドットの サイズが決定されるのを抑止する抑止手段 （3 , 3 A, 3 B) とをそなえたこと を特徴とする、 画像形成装置。
2 . 該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 A) が、 所定のディザマトリクスを用い、 該ディ ザマトリクスに対応するマトリクス状の画素プロック毎に、 前記画像データとし ての階調数に基づいて、 各画素領域に形成されるべきドットのサイズをマトリク ス状のドットパターンとして決定するものであり、
該抑止手段 （3 A) が、 前記画素ブロックを成す、 隣接する画素領域に、 前記 所定範囲内のサイズのドットを連続的に配置した状態のドットパ夕一ンが該ドッ トサイズ決定部 （1 A) によって採用されるのを抑止するように構成されている ことを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 1項記載の画像形成装置。
3 . 該抑止手段 （3 A) が、 前記画素ブロックを成す画素領域のうち、 所定割合 を超える画素領域を前記所定範囲内のサイズのドットで埋めた状態のドットパ夕 一ンが該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 A) によって採用されるのを抑止するように構 成されていることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 2項記載の画像形成装置。
4. 該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 A) によって採用されるドットパターンは、 前記 階調数に従つて前記所定範囲内の第 1サイズのドットを一つずつ増加させながら 前記画素ブロックの画素領域に配置し、 該第 1サイズのドットの配置状態が前記
25 所定割合に達すると、 前記階調数に従って、 順次、 該第 1サイズのドットを、 該 第 1サイズょりも大きい第 2サイズのドットに置き換えたものであることを特徴 とする、 請求の範囲第 3項記載の画像形成装置。 5 . 該第 2サイズが前記所定範囲を超える場合、 該ドットサイズ決定部 （ 1 A) によつて採用されるドットパターンは、 全ての該第 1サイズのドットを該第 2サ ィズのドットに置き換えた後、 さらに、 前記画素プロックの全ての画素領域に該 第 2サイズのドットが配置されるまで、 前記階調数に従い、 順次、 該第 2サイズ のドットを前記画素プロックにおけるドット未配置の画素領域に配置したもので あることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 4項記載の画像形成装置。
6 . 該抑止手段 （3 A) が、 前記所定割合を前記サイズに応じて変更する機能を 有していることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 3項〜第 5項のいずれか 1項に記載 の画像形成装置。
7 . 該抑止手段 （3 A) が、 前記所定割合を前記画像ブロックの周囲の画像状況 に応じて変更する機能を有していることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 3項〜第 5 項のいずれか 1項に記載の画像形成装置。
8 . 該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 B ) が、 誤差拡散方式を採用し、 注目画素領域に ついて、 前記画像データに基づいた誤差拡散処理後の階調数を複数のしきい値と 比較することによりその階調数に対応する階調レベルを決めてから、 該注目画素 領域に形成されるべきドットのサイズを、 その階調レベルに応じて決定するもの であり、
該抑止手段 （3 B) が、 該注目画素領域に形成されるドットのサイズと、 副走 査方向に該注目画素領域と隣接する隣接画素領域に形成されたドットのサイズと が同一になるのを抑止するように構成されていることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲 第 1項記載の画像形成装置。

9 . 該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 B) が前記階調レベルを決めるための比較処理に 際して用いる該複数のしきい値を保持するしきい値テーブル （5 ) をそなえ、 該抑止手段 （3 B) が、 該ドットサイズ決定部 （1 B) により該注目画素領域 の階調レベルを決める前に、 該隣接画素領域の階調レベルを決める基準として用 いられたしきい値を該しきい値テーブル （5 ) から抜き出すように構成されてい ることを特徴とする、 請求の範囲第 8項記載の画像形成装置。
1 0 . 入力された画像データに基づいて、 各画素領域に形成されるべきドットの サイズを決定するドットサイズ決定ステップと、
該ドットサイズ決定ステップにて決定されたサイズのドットを、 そのドットに 対応する画素領域に形成することにより、 多階調の画像を形成する画像形成ステ ップとを含み、
該ドットサイズ決定ステップにおいて、 隣接する画素領域に、 所定範囲内のサ ィズで且つ同一サイズのドッ卜が連続的に配置 ·決定されるのを抑止することを 特徴とする、 画像形成方法。
