Definitions

  • This invention comprises a fishhook with a shielding device to prevent hooking in the seabed or other obstacles, where the shielding device has barbs that create a locking effect.
  • the present invention also regards a shielding mechanism on an ordinary fishhook.
  • the shielding device is made of an elastic and flexible material and overlaps the points of the fishhook, thus preventing the hook from hooking into the seabed or other objects.
  • the present invention differs from the existing techniques because of the barbs on the outside of the shielding mechanism. These barbs create a locking effect that keeps the fish better attached and stuck to the hook. Experiments have shown that the invented device works very well in practical use; it is user-friendly and fishes very well.
  • Patent FI 56471 has a shielding mechanism that to some extent can give a locking effect, because the shielding mechanism (3) creates a pressure against the fishhook (2).
  • the present invention differs from this because the shielding device has barbs that in their selves will create a locking effect. This locking effect will increase when the fish tries to come loose. See more about this in the description of the invention below.
  • the Finnish patent also has two small pins (4) that rise up on each side of the point on the hook in order to hold the shielding mechanism into place.
  • the shape, angle and placement of these pins indicate that they will not function as barbs.
  • the Finnish design will not give a locking effect, thus the fishing performance will be better with the present invention.
  • the fishhook with the shielding device and barbs creates a locking effect, thus improving the fishing performance compared to conventional fishhooks. While reducing the risk for hooking in the seabed or other objects, the barbs simultaneously reduce the possibility for the fish to tear itself away from the hook.
  • the flexible shielding device (1) is pressed against the shank of the fishhook (3) and the point of the fishhook (4) is exposed. It would be very difficult for the fish to come loose from the hook because the barbs (2) installed on the shielding device (1) are pulled against the point (4), thus creating a press/drag between the barbs (5) of the fishhook and the shielding device (1) with barbs (2). This creates a locking effect that ensures that the fish is firmly stuck to the hook.
  • the shape of the flexible shielding device (1) and the barbs (2) ensures that the press/drag between the point of the hook (4), barb (5), arm (6) and the shielding device (1) with barbs (2) increases significantly if the movement of the fish is reversed according to the direction it had when it bit the point (4) of the hook. This ensures that the locking effect increases the harder the fish tries to come loose.
  • the shielding device (1) Because the shielding device (1) is flexible, it will be pressed towards the shaft of the fishhook (3) and expose the point (4) when the fish bites. There will be a press/drag towards the regular barbs (5) and arms (6), thus creating a reverse locking effect when the fish tries to come loose.
  • the locking mechanism of the invention utilizes the existing, static barbs (5) and arms (6) of the fishhook to create a two-sided locking principle by adding an elastic counter force in the shielding device (1), which means that the effect on the barbs of the shielding device (2) increases with the fish's effort to come loose.
  • FIG. 1 showing the shielding device (1) with locking effect on an ordinary fishhook with three arms (6) and three points (4).
  • the number of flexible shielding devices corresponds to the number of arms (6) on the fishing hook.
  • the flexible shielding device (1) is fixed in the upper part of the shaft (3) near the eye of the hook, and extends towards and over the point (4) in such a way that the point will not hook into the seabed or other objects during fishing.
  • the shielding device (1) is made of a sufficiently stiff material to prevent the point (4) from being exposed when the fishhook is pulled through the seabed or hits other objects in the water during fishing.
  • the size and placement of the barbs (2) varies according to the size of the fishhook and the shielding device (1) itself.
  • the barbs (2) are fixed on the outside of the shielding device (1).
  • FIG. 2 shows the placement of the barbs (2) on the shielding device (1) when the shielding device (1) is pressed towards the shaft (3) and is parallel with the latter.
  • FIG. 3 shows how the locking effect works; the shielding device (1) creates a locking effect when the barbs (2) on the shielding device are pressed towards the point (4) on the fishing hook due to the resilience of the shielding device.
  • barbs (2) on the shielding device will increase the locking effect when the fish (in FIG. 3 illustrated by a finger) tries to come loose, due to the withholding effect created by the barbs on the fishhook (4) and the shielding device (2).
  • the locking effect increases proportionally with the force that pulls the fish towards the barbs on the shielding device (2) and the barb on the fishhook (5).
  • the shielding device with the locking effect is easily installed on ordinary fishhooks already on the market, and it may be produced for all types of conventional fishhooks.
  • the invention may be used on all types of lures and fishing devices, both in fresh and salt water.
  • the invention will not be limited to fishhooks with three arms (6) as shown in FIGS. 1 through 3.
  • the shielding device (1) is made of a flexible material and the barbs (2) in a stiff material. Both parts can be made of many different types of materials, and they may have several shapes in order to create the most effective locking effect.
