Definitions

  • the process according to the present invention concerns the wet dressing of cement mixes, comprising solid components and water, for immediate use - directly on the yard or close to the dressing site - in the production of plain concrete and other articles using cement as a binder, such as concrete mixes of various types, and different kinds of articles as, for example, asbestos cement articles and grouting mixes for injections of consolidation and/or impermeabilization.
  • cement is a hydraulic binder which, mixed with water, gives rise to products having a mechanical resistance and chemical stability, even if kept under water
  • the most important hydraulic binder is Portland cement, which consists of a mixture of clinker and hydrate calcium sulphate (or, more rarely, natural anhydrite) , the clinker being in turn the baking product, at about 1 300-1 500 °C, of a mixture of limestone, clay, sand, purple ore, and so on. It is also known that clinker, once it has been cooled and mixed with modest percentages of bihydrated gypsum - and eventually with pozzuolana or slag, in the production of pozzuolana or slag cement - is dry-milled into ball mills, consisting of horizontal rotating cylinders containing steel balls or rods which bump into one another squashing and grinding the material.
  • milling is an essential step as it has an important effect on the surface area of the product, which in turn determines the hardening speed and the final strength- in fact, the finer the cement the more accentuated are these properties.
  • the milling costs get higher the finer the cement one tries to obtain.
  • cement has always been dry-milled - at least on an industrial scale - the product obtained being meant, ever since the start, to be prepared on the production site so as to be stored and/or conveyed in a dry state, into sacks and/or loose, in tankers and in siios.
  • cement has always been used at a great distance, in space and time, from the production sites, since the opportunities of an immediate use thereof as soon as prepared, to produce concrete or other mixes, were rare and anyhow not taken into consideration.
  • the invention also concerns a process for the production of concrete and concrete mixes, which consists in preparing a cement mix with the wet-milling process described heretofore and in subsequently mixing said mix with the suitable inert aggregates, such as sand and gravel.
  • the wet-milling process according to the present invention besides being suited to produce concrete mixes for ordinary use, is also particularly suited to prepare both mixes used as a starting material for the production of articles using cement as a binder, for example asbestos cement articles, and grouting mixes for injections of consolidation and/or impermeabilization
  • the milling determines an increase of the viscosity of said mix (the viscosity being higher the finer the product obtained), which should actually keep within a range such as to ensure a good mixing of the product.
  • the mix should be used for the production of concrete, and that the water/cement ratio should be higher than desired - due, for example, to the humidity of the aggregates - it is evidently possible, with a slight addition of dry cement, to reestablish the desired ratio
  • a high concentration of the mix allows to obtain the best milling results by operating with microball mills.
  • the mix - prepared, as seen, in the turbodissolver - is introduced into a microball mill, to carry out a proper wet- milling thereof possibly after having added thereto a fluidizer or a superfluidizer and/or a retarder and/or chemical agents for hydration control, according to the operating requirements and to the type of cement mix one wishes to obtain. It is normally preferable - but not strictly necessary - to carry out said addition in water, before adding the cement, on preparing the mix.
  • the mix obtained from the microball mill, with the wet-milling process according to the invention is ready to be immediately used for the production of concrete and concrete mixes, possibly after having added thereto pozzuolana or other components for special cements (which could even have been wet-milled separately)
  • the mix according to the invention must be combined within a short period of time - which, however, need not be so strictly short as to prevent reasonable waiting times on the building yard, or short transports close to the production site - with the suitable inert aggregates
  • the cement mixes, the different kinds of articles and the mixes for injections thus obtained are of excellent quality, as if one had started from fine or microfine cement, but their costs are much lower thanks to the easiness of the wet-miiling process and to its reduced costs Moreover, the wet-milling can determine an even considerable temperature increase of the mix, with advantageous effects - for example - in the production of concretes in cold climates.
  • the mixes were pumped, by means of a suitable pump, into a microball mill, and they were milled for a few minutes. Some samples were then taken of the outcoming product, the fineness of which depended on the speed of its passage through the mill Two granulomet ⁇ c tests were carried out on the mixes before the milling, and four were carried out after the milling.
  • D90, D50 and D 10 are the lower micron values, for which 90% , 50% and 10% of the particles are dimensionally evidenced.
  • the specific surface value expressed in the Table should be considered as a term of comparison, but with no absolute value, in that it forms a datum which has been mathematically reckoned on the basis of the granulometric data, and not physically reckoned, as done with the specific equipment.
