Definitions
- the invention relates to a sewage filter for handling especially washing water and lavatory wastewater, which filter includes a container comprised of a lid, bottom, inlet for conducting water to be treated into the container, outlet for conducting treated water out of the container, and a filter unit within the container, between the inlet and outlet, for absorbing solid impurities and bacteria from the water treated.
- Wastewater from saunas and other washing facilities of rural houses and summer cottages are often conducted direct into a hole dug on the ground wherefrom the water soaks into the surrounding soil. Instead of a hole in the ground the wastewater may be conducted into a pit built of concrete rings through the bottom of which the wastewater is soaked into the soil.
- the wastewater may be conducted into a pit built of concrete rings through the bottom of which the wastewater is soaked into the soil.
- offered in the consumer market there are also closed plastic containers with perforated bottoms designed especially for soaking the washing water coming from saunas. The washing water is conducted into the container via an inlet and it drains from the container into the soil through the bottom perforations.
- a filtering soakage sink designed especially for the treatment of washings, including a container with a lid, an inlet for washings in the upper part of the container, an outlet for washings in the lower part of the container, and a filter element between the inlet and outlet comprised of a plurality of mineral wool sheets placed on top of one another.
- the aim of the filter element is to rid the washings of solid impurities and as much of the bacteria as possible before the water is soaked into the soil.
- the drawback of a filtering soakage sink is that such a sink is difficult to service. Solid impurities in the washings remain in the mineral wool filter and in time clog the filter. Therefore, the mineral wool sheets have to be replaced regularly. Replacing the wet and dirty filter sheets located deep at the bottom of the sink is a difficult and inconvenient task.
- An object of the invention is to reduce the disadvantages and drawbacks associated with current washing water treatment techniques.
- the sewage filter according to the invention is characterized in that the filter unit is made into a unit removable from the container.
- a sewage filter according to the invention includes a cartridge-type filter unit which is easily and simply replaced.
- the invention further comprises a soakage tube to speed up the soakage of filtered washing water into the soil.
- the sewage filter according to the invention has many advantages.
- the invention is environment- friendly, because it removes from the washing water most of the solid impurities and bacteria and thus prevents contamination of soil and natural water systems.
- the invention is also easy to maintain and reliable in operation. Replacement of the filter unit is a simple procedure, so the apparatus can be serviced with ease.
- the soakage tube that belongs to the filter ensures that the soaking capacity of the apparatus is sufficient even in compact soil. Since the filter unit removes solid impurities from the washing water, the soakage tube remains unclogged and operative.
- the invention is simple in construction and can be assembled using ready-made standard components so that the manufacturing costs of the invention are low. Moreover, the invention is small, lightweight and easy to install.
- Fig. 1 shows by way of example a cross section of the sewage filter according to the invention when the filter is in the operating mode, immersed in the ground,
- Fig. 2 shows by way of example the sewage filter according to the invention when the filter unit is being replaced
- Fig. 3 shows by way of example the sewage filter according to the invention in the transport mode.
- Fig. 1 shows by way of example a vertical cross section of the sewage filter according to the invention when the filter is in its operating position, immersed in the ground.
- the sewage filter advantageously comprises a cylindrical container 1 with a bottom 2 and advantageously a thermally insulated removable lid 3.
- the container may be advantageously made of a plastic material or some other known material.
- the inlet 4 is coupled e.g.
- the outlet is coupled to a soakage tube 6 that belongs to the invention.
- the soakage tube is a perforated flexible tube via which the treated water is conducted into the soil.
- the soakage tube is immersed in the ground at the height level of the outlet or below it.
- the soakage tube is advantageously installed around the container 1 in the shape of a spiral, but other installation patterns are possible as well.
- the end of the soakage tube is advantageously raised above the ground.
- a filter unit 7 comprising a rod-like stem part 8, a plate-like perforated lower plane 9 attached near one end of the stem part, a plate-like perforated upper plane 10 attached near the second end of the stem part, and a filter element 11 between the lower plane and upper plane.
- the filter element may utilize any known filter material such as mineral wool, natural rock, sawdust, or granular or porous plastic material.
- the granular or loose filter material may be placed in a reticular bag (not shown) which holds the filter material in a single package when the filter unit is outside the container as the filter is being replaced.
- a handle 12 At one end of the stem part there is additionally a handle 12 to facilitate the lifting-up and lowering-down of the filter unit.
- the lower plane 9 of the filter unit 7 is supported by supporting elements 13 attached to the inner surface of the container 1, near the bottom 2 of the container, which supporting elements hold the filter unit at a suitable level in the container.
- the supporting elements 13 may be replaced by support legs 16 attached to the lower surface of the lower plane of the filter unit, which legs rest on the bottom of the container and hold the filter unit at a suitable distance from the bottom.
- the sewage filter according to the invention functions as follows. Water to be treated comes via the inlet 4 on top of the upper plane 10 and steadily drains through the perforations in the upper plane into the filter element 11. In the filter element, solid particles in the water are caught by the filter material and treated water flows through the perforations in the lower plane 9 onto the bottom of the container 2. Treated water leaves the container through the outlet 5 and enters in the soakage tube 6 and is then absorbed by the surrounding soil.
- Fig. 2 shows by way of example the sewage filter according to the invention, with the filter unit 7 lifted out of the container 1 so that the filter element 11 can be replaced.
- the figure illustrates how a discrete filter unit can be easily lifted from the container onto the ground so that the used filter element can be removed and replaced with a new one.
- Fig. 3 shows by way of example the sewage filter according to the invention in its transport mode.
- the flexible soakage tube 6 may be coiled around the container 1 so that the whole apparatus can be packed into a compact and easy-to-handle form which is advantageous from the storage and transport standpoint.
- Figs. 1, 2 and 3 describe an advantageous embodiment of the sewage filter according to the invention.
- the invention comprises, instead of a soakage tube, an unperforated outlet tube through which treated water is conducted e.g. into a soak pit, onto a wider area in the soil, or into a separate container to be used for irrigation.
- the soakage tube is left out altogether and treated water is conducted through the outlet direct into the surrounding soil.
- This advantageous embodiment of the invention can be used in a situation where the soil is extremely permeable to water or the amount of water to be treated is very small.
- the invention is not limited to the solutions described above, but the inventional idea can be applied in numerous ways within the limits defined by the claims attached hereto.
- Application of the invention is not limited solely to the treatment of washing water but it can be used as well for treating sewage from a water closet, for example.
- the invention is especially applicable to the treatment of sewage from a water closet when a reagent is added to the toilet flushing water, which reagent precipitates the phosphorus in soluble form in the wastewater.
- the invention can also be used to reduce nutrients in the wastewater.
