Definitions
- the invention relates generally to teats for infants and children. More specifically, the invention can be implemented:
- sucking nipple or pacifier
- Lollipops made from a material such as rubber, comprising a central nipple intended to cooperate with the tongue of a child or infant, have long been known. These pacifiers are generally provided with a plate intended to come to bear on the outer surface of the lips, and with a gripping ring.
- pacifiers The main function of these pacifiers is the distraction and the appeasement of the child (as well illustrated by their Anglo-Saxon name of "pacifying"). There are also sophisticated models of pacifiers to perform an additional function, such as the administration of an active ingredient that the child swallows while sucking the nipple of the pacifier.
- pacifiers can constitute a relatively effective solution to the immediate problem which is the nervousness of the child, they can however have extremely harmful effects on the evolution of the shape of the mouth of the child: a well known problem is in particular the creation of a gap between the upper and lower incisors, because the central nipple constitutes an obstacle to the development of the incisors of the child.
- Lollipops are also known, the specific configuration of which is intended to limit the damage that can be caused in the mouth of children by excessive use of the lollipop. Examples of such lollipops can be found in documents WO 96/20687 (Alanen and Varrela) and FR 2 705 885 (Pick).
- pacifiers consist of elements intended to statically distribute the forces resulting from the suction. It is possible that such pacifiers are less harmful to the mouth of the child than conventional pacifiers comprising a central nipple intended to be engaged between the middle parts of the lower arches and superior; however, these soothers are only an imperfect response to the causes of oral deformities.
- the facial skull may not develop sufficiently so that the lower jaw remains excessively behind the upper jaw, or that the teeth insufficiently eroded due to the absence of lateral movements of the jaws have tendency to produce blockages of the jaws as a result of the interlocking of the teeth of the upper jaw with those of the lower jaw.
- hybrid devices which are presented as a pacifier reproducing certain characteristics of orthodontic aligners and provided with a ring of grip for the child. Examples of such devices can be found in the documents FR 2 595 046 (Giordanno) and EP 400 217 (Bergersen).
- An object of the invention is to meet this need.
- the invention proposes a pacifier for infants or children, comprising a tray on which the arches rest and defining a bite plane, said tray being limited towards the front by a vestibular screen on which at least an arcade abuts in a desired position, said tray being secured to means projecting forwards out of the mouth, pacifier characterized in that it comprises a nipple projecting from the rear of the tray, said nipple being intended to cooperate with the tongue to stimulate a movement analogous to that of feeding.
- Preferred, but non-limiting aspects of the teat according to the invention are the following:
- the protruding nipple is connected to the rear of the tray by elastic means,
- the vestibular screen comprises: v an upper part situated above the bite plane, and a lower part situated below the bite plane and offset towards the rear relative to the upper part,
- the offset between the upper and lower parts of the vestibular screen is of the order of 1 to 3 mm
- a substantially vertical wall has come integrally with the rear edge of the plate and said wall defines with the vestibular screen a - gutter to receive the arches
- Said plate has a general "U" shape, the branches of which extend back to the rear of the arches
- the nipple is opposite the back of the tongue when the teat is in position in the mouth of the infant or child
- the surface of the plate comprises abrasive means
- the means projecting forward from the mouth include a support plate on the front face of the lips or a gripping ring,
- the protruding means forward out of the mouth include a closure element of a bottle and the teat is traversed longitudinally by a channel allowing the infant or child to suck a liquid contained in the bottle.
- FIG. 1 is a rear perspective view of a pacifier according to the invention
- - Figure 2 is a rear elevation view of the same pacifier, on which are defined the longitudinal section planes III-III and IV-IV
- - Figure 3 is a view of the pacifier of Figures 1 and 2, according to the cutting plane lll-lll,
- FIG. 4 is a view of the same lollipop along the section plane IV-IV,
- FIG. 5 is a block diagram showing the implantation of a pacifier according to the invention in the mouth of a child
- - Figure 6 is a rear perspective view of an alternative embodiment of a pacifier according to the invention
- FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a bottle nipple according to the invention.
- FIGS. 8a and 8b are two representations of two respective geometries of the nipple of a pacifier according to the invention.
- FIGS. 9a and 9b are respectively a top view and a longitudinal section view of a pacifier according to the invention intended for a child under three years of age
- - Figures 10a and 10b are two views corresponding to the views of Figures 9a and 9b, and showing a pacifier according to the invention intended for a child over three years.
- FIG. 1 shows a pacifier according to the invention.
- This pacifier includes:
- a horizontal plate 10 whose generally flat shape takes that of a "U” whose concavity is intended to be directed towards the front of the mouth, the ends of the branches of the "U” of the plate being directed towards the rear .
- the two main faces of this plate (upper and lower face) can be made slightly abrasive (by using a mold whose surface condition is adapted or by depositing a suitable surface coating, for example) .
- the plate 10 is intended to receive on its two respective faces the two arches of the child; it thus constitutes a bite plane, • a nipple 20, the center of which is situated substantially in the plane of the plate 10, behind this plate,
- connection part 30 for connecting the nipple 20 to the rear of the tray.
- the connection between this part 30 and the plate 10 is in the present embodiment carried out in the region of the plate which is median in the transverse direction of the pacifier,
- a wall 40 extending perpendicular to the plane of the plate from the front edge thereof.
- This wall which will be called “vestibular screen” is intended to ensure correct positioning of the upper arch of the infant or child in the plane of the plate 10, the arch which rests on the plate also coming into abutment against the vestibular screen.
- the rear edge of the plate 10 is not in the embodiment of FIG. 1 secured to any wall similar to the vestibular screen 40,
- a plate 50 which can be made of rigid plastic. This plate is similar to those found in conventional lollipops; it is intended to come to rest on the outside of the child's lips.
- the plate 50 is provided on its front face with a gripping ring 60 and it is connected to the front of the plate 10 by a second connecting part 70, of a length of the order of a centimeter and of a thickness as reduced as possible so as not to hinder the closing of the lips (of the order of a millimeter, depending on the material used).
- FIG. 2 shows the same rear pacifier in rear elevation.
- This figure shows the nipple 20 located at the rear of the tray 10.
- This figure also shows the vestibular screen 40 already described with reference to Figure 1, which is located above the tray.
- the pacifier also includes a second vestibular screen 45, which also extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tray from the region of the front edge thereof, below said / tray.
- Figure 3 which is a longitudinal longitudinal sectional view of the pacifier of Figures 1 and 2 allows to visualize in particular the relative positions of the two vestibular screens 40 and 45: we see in this figure that these two screens which are located vertically from and other of the plate 10 do not extend in the extension of one another.
- the upper screen 40 is slightly advanced relative to the lower screen 45, defining between the rear faces of the two screens an offset ⁇ of the order of 2mm.
- This offset which also appears in FIG. 4, is intended to promote good relative positioning of the upper and lower arches, the upper arch having to be slightly more advanced than the lower arch in order to allow the teeth of the upper arch to overlap the teeth of the lower arch.
- This offset is only present on the front part of the vestibular screens 40 and 45, these screens extending towards the rear of the branches of the “U” of the tray with their respective internal faces in contact with the arches which extend opposite l 'from each other in the vertical direction, so that the offset created between the upper and lower arches concerns only the longitudinal direction which corresponds to the median axis of the mouth.
- the vestibular screen 45 extends in the extension of the screen 40 in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the plate 10.
- the plate 10 is as we said intended to receive on its two respective faces the upper and lower arches of the child and thus defines a bite plane. It must be as thin as possible so that its thickness does not disturb the closing of the mouth. In practice, the thickness of this plate is substantially equivalent to the thickness of the plates of the orthodontic aligners, that is to say of the order of a millimeter.
- FIG. 5 illustrates the positioning of the pacifier according to the invention in the mouth of a child. It can be seen in this figure that the branches of the plate 10 extend backwards to the location of the molars, the position of which is marked with dotted lines. This ensures that the faces of the plate cooperate with the entire length of each arch.
- the upper arch A1 rests on the top of the tray while being in abutment forwards on the rear face of the upper vestibular screen 40, while the lower arch A2 abuts on the lower vestibular screen 45 which is situated slightly behind the upper vestibular screen: thanks to the offset ⁇ , the arches A1 and A2 have a correct relative position.
- a pacifier intended for an infant or a very young child it is also possible in the case of a pacifier intended for an infant or a very young child to provide an offset ⁇ zero.
- the child's lips come to bear on the respective front faces of the vestibular screens 40 and 45. This support constitutes a stress on the lips and strengthen their tone, which contributes to the overall stimulation of the stomatognathic system.
- the connecting part 30 between the plate and the nipple is elastic, in order to allow a displacement of the nipple backwards when the latter is stressed by the tongue of the child while permanently recalling said nipple towards the plate (towards front).
- This elasticity of the connecting part 30 can be obtained by making this part in a plastic more elastic than the material of the plate 10 and the nipple 20, or by designing the geometry of this part so that it has a narrowed section, or by using any other known means such as a connecting part 30 which can move longitudinally relative to the plate and which is associated with a spring, as taught in document EP199 005 (Rodam SA).
- the elasticity of the connecting part 30 makes it possible to reinforce the motivation of the child to interact with the nipple, which has a dynamic behavior close to that of the breast.
- the distance between the nipple and the back of the tray is adapted so that the nipple is facing the back of the tongue, to allow good cooperation between the child's tongue and the nipple. It thus appears that the pacifier according to the invention simultaneously fulfills the following functions:
- the device according to the invention strongly stimulates the dynamic functioning of the stomatognathic system: not only does the child have to advance his lower jaw to correctly position the lower arch A2 under the plate 10 and against the lower vestibular screen 45, but moreover the nipple connected to the pacifier by the elastic connecting part 30 causes stimulation important language of the child.
- This second stimulation constitutes in a way the "motor" which will drive the functioning of the stomatognathic system of the child, who finds satisfaction in the fact of interacting with the nipple through his tongue and his palate,
- the pacifiers according to the invention provide, like conventional pacifiers, the tranquilization function of the child.
- FIG. 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the pacifier according to the invention, in which the plate 10 is associated not only with a vestibular screen 40 on its front edge, but also with another screen 80, substantially parallel to the screen 40 , extending from the rear edge of the tray.
- a gutter was thus formed on the upper face of the plate 10 to position the upper arch of the child.
- the screen 80 which extends from the rear edge of the tray can only protrude upwards as shown in FIG. 6, or on both sides of the plane of the tray to also form a gutter on the underside of the tray with the lower vestibular screen 45.
- the lollipops described can be manufactured by any means known per se; the pacifier can thus be produced by molding a plastic or rubbery material to form a sub-assembly formed by the plate 10 and the various screens which extend from its edges, from the connecting part 30, from the nipple 20 and of the connecting part 70, the plate 50 and the ring 60 being assembled with the rest of the lollipop in a subsequent step.
- the pacifier can also consider a multi-material molding, the elasticity of the material constituting the connecting part 30 then being greater than that of the other parts coming from molding.
- the invention can also be implemented in a bottle nipple, as shown in FIG. 7.
- the plate 50 and the grip ring 60 are replaced by a ring
- the other elements of the teat are similar to the elements used in the pacifier, with the exception of a longitudinal channel 90 which runs right through the tray 10, the connecting part 30 and the nipple 20 for connecting an orifice 91 opening into the internal cavity of the dome 110 which overhangs the bottle and a second orifice 92 opening onto the surface of the nipple.
- Figures 8a and 8b show two embodiments of the nipple 20.
- the nipple of Figure 8a has a conventional spherical shape.
- the nipple of Figure 8b has a flattened shape on top, to facilitate cooperation between the top of the nipple and the palate of the child.
- the nipple can also have any ergonomic shape, for example a flared shape on the sides of its upper part in order to cooperate effectively with the lateral parts of the child's palate.
- the invention is intended for infants and young children. It is thus possible to provide different sizes of teats depending on the size of the child's mouth.
- a teat intended for a newborn baby must include a tray compatible with arches whose greatest width (measured at the back of the arch) is of the order of three centimeters; in this case the spacing between the two rear ends of the vestibular screen 40 which are substantially opposite one another will therefore be slightly greater than this magnitude, the two ends of the screen framing the rear ends of the 'arcade. Still in the case of a newborn, the length of the arch (distance measured in the longitudinal direction of the mouth) is of the order of two centimeters; the plate 10 may then have a comparable length, even slightly longer.
- the tray 10 may also extend only in the front part of the child's mouth, the teeth located at the back arches generally not growing before the age of three. In this case, the plate 10 will extend about 1.5 centimeters on each side of the median axis of the teat (while the screen 40 may extend further back).
- the width of the plate 10 can be of the order of 5 millimeters in the middle region of the plate (width 11), and, if the plate extends towards the rear of the arches (in particular for children of three years and more, which corresponds to the representation of FIGS. 10a and 10b), of the order of 8 millimeters towards the ends of the plate (width 12), so that the width of the plate corresponds to that of the teeth or arches .
- the width of the plate 10 which is, as we said, of the order of 5 millimeters in its middle region is reduced on the underside of the plate, by a corresponding value at ⁇ .
- the pacifiers or teats according to the invention can be produced by one-piece molding of a plastic material (such as rubber, silicone, etc.).
- the thickness of the plate 10 which is of the order of a millimeter, is adapted to mechanically resist the action of the teeth and the arches, and in particular not to be pierced during use, but it must be reduced as much as possible in order not to favor a gap between the arches.
- the nipple 20 which, as has been said, must extend opposite the back of the child's tongue, may have a length L of the order of 2.5 centimeters, and therefore extends backwards so that its rear edge is approximately 3 centimeters behind the screen 40.
- This nipple typically extends towards the rear of the teat by exceeding the rear of the U-shaped branches of the plate 10, said branches being able to extend in the case of a teat intended for a child over three years of age ( Figures 10a and 10b) about 3 centimeters behind the vestibular screen 40, while the nipple protrudes about 5 millimeters from the back of these branches.
- the height h1 of the upper vestibular screen 40 can be of the order of 8 millimeters, and that of the lower vestibular screen 45 can be of the order of 5 millimeters for a child under three years of age (height h2 on Figure 9b), and of the order of 8 millimeters for an older child (height h2 'in Figure 10b).
- Figures 9a to 10b show that the pacifier includes not only vestibular screens 40 and 45 which extend from the front of the tray 10, but also a screen 85 which starts from the rear edge of the tray 10, with an oblique orientation extending downwards and backwards, thus forming an angle of around 45 degrees with the plane of the plate 10.
- the height h of such a screen 85 (that is to say its maximum measurement in a longitudinal section plane of the teat) can be of the order of 6 millimeters.
- the nipple can have a substantially round geometry in top view, in order to fill the mouth of the child as a breast would do during feeding.
- the nipple thus has the general shape of a circle of approximately 2.5 centimeters in diameter.
- This nipple can extend not in the extension of the plane of the plate 10, but forming upward an angle of the order of about 30 degrees with this plane, so that the nipple at rest extends towards the rear along a length of the order of 2.5 centimeters, and upwards with a height of the order of 1.5 centimeters.
