- the present invention relates to portable freezer cabinets of the type which comprise an insulated shell defining an inner space and removable carrier means for a eutectic medium mounted within said shell.
- Freezer cabinets which comprise an insulated shell and with removable eutectic cooling elements are known. Suitable eutectic media are well known in the art. An advantage of both these types of cabinets is that they can be moved from place to place while keeping their contents at a low temperature. Those cabinets having removable eutectic cooling elements have the further advantage that the elements can be removed from the cabinet from chilling and then replaced in the cabinet while it is in use.
- the present invention relates to a portable freezer cabinet comprising, an insulated outer shell defining an inner space and, removably mounted within said shell, carrier means for a eutectic medium, said carrier means being so disposed as to divide said inner space into a plurality of regions for the storage of goods.
- the cabinets according to the invention can be rapidly loaded with goods and the carriers within a cold store and closed before being loaded onto a transport vehicle: this significantly reduces the time that operators have to spend in cold store conditions and reduces the incidence of heat shock to products.
- An additional advantage of the present invention is that the number of cabinets used with a particular vehicle can be varied to accommodate fluctuations in demand.

- the outer shell comprises two metal skins and, between the skins and an insulating, non-CFC blown, poly-urethane foam layer (5) which retards the transfer of heat from the ambient into the inner space.
- the cabinet is mounted on feet (15) which enable it to be lifted, for example by means of a fork-lift truck.
- Aluminium mounting brackets (4) are fixed to the inner walls of the shell (1).

- Carriers (10) are slidably mounted between the brackets, to define a plurality of regions (8, 8a, 8b) for the storage of goods .
- the carriers (10) comprise metal mesh cages containing a plurality of closed plastic containers (9, 9a) for the eutectic medium. Suitable eutectic media are well known in the art. In an alternative a single container for a eutectic medium may be associated with each carrier. It will be noted that in this embodiment the carriers are so disposed to form shelves for the goods to be placed within the cabinet. Brackets (4) are so disposed that further carriers may be mounted against the inner walls of the shell for example between pairs of brackets (7, 7a).
- Insulated and gasketed doors which are not shown, allow independent access to the regions (8, 8a, 8b) .
- the doors Prior to use, the doors are opened and the carriers (10) are removed from within the cabinet.
- the contents of the carriers (10) are then chilled, typically using a fixed installation which is also used for the storage of the goods to be transported in the cabinet.
- the carriers Once the contents of the carriers has been chilled to the required temperature, the carriers are replaced in the cabinet and the goods to be transported loaded into the spaces (8, 8a, 9b) .
- additional carriers (11, shown dashed) are mounted against the inner walls of the shell between pairs of brackets (7, 7a), or otherwise.
- this entire process can be conducted rapidly and within a cold store. In use, only one region need be accessed at any one time allowing for the other regions to be maintained at a relatively low temperature .
