Abstract

A high pressure pump (14) supplies cleaning fluid from a reservoir (12) to spray nozzles (20) inside a washing chamber (10). The spray nozzles (20) spray the cleaning fluid over a load to be cleaned. Used cleaning fluid is collected in a sump (30). A sump pump (32) drains the sump. The combination of the high pressure pump and sump pump provides more efficient cleaning of the load and eliminates the requirement for a deep sump beneath the washer. A vertical traveler (22), having a pair of counterbalanced spray arms (24), raises and lowers the spray nozzles counter cyclically; a detergent injection system (50) accurately meters a correct amount of detergent which is added to the cleaning fluid, and a filtration device (34) filters suspended material from the used cleaning fluid and uses a portion of the cleaning fluid to clean itself.

Claims

- 25 -AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 2 August 1999 (02.08.99); original claims 1-14 replaced by amended claims 1-19 (6 pages)]Having thus described the preferred embodiment, the invention is now claimed to be:
1. A washer including a washing chamber (10), spray nozzles (20) disposed in the washing chamber to spray a cleaning fluid over a load to be cleaned, a cleaning fluid reservoir (12, 30) , a pump (14) which pumps cleaning fluid from the cleaning fluid reservoir to the spray nozzles, and a filtration device (34) which removes suspended material from the cleaning fluid, the filtration device including a fluid inlet (110) which receives cleaning fluid, a filtration screen (108) which filters suspended material from the cleaning fluid, and a first fluid outlet (114) through which filtered cleaning fluid leaves the filtration device, characterized by: the filtration device further including: a second fluid outlet (112) which directs unfiltered cleaning fluid from the filtration device to a drain (36) , and a valve (102) connected with the second fluid outlet, which valve selectively opens to discharge accumulated debris from the filtration device through the second fluid outlet.
2. The washer of claim 1, further characterized by the filtration screen (108) being vertically aligned.
3. The washer of either one of claims l and 2, further characterized by the screen being tubular, the fluid inlet directing unfiltered cleaning fluid into an interior of the tubular screen and the second fluid outlet being connected with a lower most region in the interior of the tubular screen. - 26 -
4. The washer of preceding claim 3, further characterized by: upper and lower annular gaskets (116, 118) which seal the screen at open ends thereof around the fluid inlet (110) and second fluid outlet (112) .
5. The washer of any one of preceding claims 1-4, further characterized by the second fluid outlet (112) being below the screen (108) and the fluid inlet (110) being above the screen, such that when the valve selectively opens to discharge accumulated debris unfiltered cleaning fluid enters the filtration device above the filtration screen, contacts the filtration screen, and leaves the filtration device below the filtration screen.
6. A method of cleaning, the method including supplying spray nozzles (20) with a cleaning fluid, spraying the cleaning fluid from the spray nozzles over a load to be cleaned, and filtering the cleaning fluid with a filtration device (34) , characterized by: selectively opening a valve (102) in the filtration device to direct a portion of the sprayed cleaning fluid to a drain (36) to discharge accumulated debris from the filtration device.
7. The cleaning method of claim 6 further characterized by: the filter being tubular; unfiltered cleaning fluid passing into an interior of the tubular filter, through the filter, and to the spray heads ; and debris accumulating in the interior of the tubular - 27 - f i lter .
8. The cleaning method of claim 7 further characterized by the valve (102) being in fluid communication with a lower most portion of the interior of the tubular filter, such that: when the valve is opened, unfiltered cleaning fluid flows along an interior surface of the tubular screen removing debris and the removed and accumulated debris is flushed out through the valve.
9. A washer including a washing chamber (10), spray nozzles (20) disposed within the chamber for spraying a cleaning fluid into the chamber, a pump (14) which pumps cleaning fluid to the spray nozzles, and a cleaning fluid reservoir (12) which supplies the pump with cleaning fluid, characterized by: a vertical traveler (22) which alternately raises and lowers the spray nozzles, the vertical traveler including: first and second counterbalanced spray arms (24, 24'), disposed adjacent opposite sides of the washing chamber, a first set of spray nozzles disposed on the first spray arm and a second set of spray nozzles disposed on the second spray arm, and a drive system (60) that sequentially raises and lowers countercyclically the first spray arm and the second spray arm.
10. The washer of preceding claim 9, further characterized by the drive system including: a drive cable (70) ; and a drive means (72), the drive means engaging the drive - 28 - cable and alternatively moving the cable a preselected distance in a first direction and a preselected distance in a second direction, the first direction being opposite to the second direction; the drive cable forming a closed loop which passes from the drive means to the first spray arm and then to the second spray arm before returning to the drive means; whereby the alternative movement of the cable causes first and second set of spray nozzles to travel vertically in opposite directions.
11. The washer of claim 10, further characterized by the drive means including a rodless pneumatic cylinder (72).
12. The washer of any of preceding claims 9-11, further characterized by: a break-away connection between the drive cable and the drive means for disconnecting the drive cable from the drive means; and a safety cable which prevents the pair of spray arms from simultaneously moving in a downward direction.
13. The washer of any of preceding claims 9-12, further characterized by: a shallow sump (30) at the bottom of the washing chamber which collects the cleaning fluid sprayed over the load; a sump pump (32) which pumps cleaning fluid from the sump; a cleaning fluid reservoir; and the pump (14) being high pressure pump for pumping cleaning fluid at high pressure from the cleaning fluid reservoir to the spray nozzles. - 29 -
14. The washer of any of preceding claims 9-13 further characterized by: a filtration device (34) which selectively filters the sprayed cleaning fluid and uses a portion of the cleaning fluid to clean the filtration device of suspended material removed from the cleaning fluid by the filtration device.
15. A cleaning method, the method including supplying spray nozzles (20) with a cleaning fluid, spraying the cleaning fluid from the spray nozzles over a load to be cleaned, and raising and lowering a first set of the spray nozzles and a second set of the spray nozzles, characterized by: raising a first set of the spray nozzles at the same time as lowering a second set of the spray nozzles, the first and second sets of spray nozzles being counterbalanced; lowering the first set of the spray nozzles at the same time as raising the second set of the spray nozzles; and, preventing the first set of spray nozzles and the second set of spray nozzles from simultaneously moving in a downward direction.
16. The method of claim 15, further characterized by: the first set of spray nozzles being disposed on a first spray arm (24) and the second set of spray nozzles disposed on a second spray arm (24'); and the steps of raising and lowering the spray nozzles including alternatively moving a drive cable (70) a preselected distance in a first direction and a preselected distance in a second direction, the first direction being opposite to the second direction, the drive cable forming a closed loop which passes from the first spray arm to the second spray arm; - 30 -
whereby the alternative movement of the cable causes the first and second set of spray nozzles to travel vertically in opposite directions.
17. The method of claim 15, further characterized by a break-away connection between the drive cable and the drive means for disconnecting the drive cable from the drive means; and preventing the pair of spray arms from simultaneously moving in a downward direction with a safety cable.
