Definitions
- This invention relates primarily to so called “hands free kits", which allow the user of a mobile telephone to use it without having to hold the mobile telephone whilst it is being used.
- the invention relates to a hands free kit which uses a solar powered radio frequency or infra red microphone which replaces the wired connections between a microphone pickup and the actual cradle of the hands free kit.
- Hands free kits for mobile telephones have proven to be useful adjuncts providing a greater degree of convenience and in some cases safety for mobile phone users (especially when used by drivers of vehicles).
- hands free kits have been available as either personal or in-vehicle kits.
- the former generally consists of a unit or module which can be connected to and locked onto a mobile phone and which provides external connections for a speaker and microphone which can be located at a position remote from the phone itself.
- a person can wear the mobile phone for example on the belt of his/her trousers, whilst a lead is connected from the attached hands free kit module to a microphone/headphone speaker arrangement conveniently mounted on a headband or the like to be worn on the head, allowing the user to speak to and hear a person on the phone, without the need to hold the mobile phone itself.
- the mobile phone can be set to answer an incoming call automatically so that the wearer can immediately and conveniently receive the call totally "hands free".
- in-vehicle hands free kits have generally developed which favour the use of an external speaker conveniently mounted for example under the dash, and a remote microphone located adjacent the driver's head for convenience. It will also be appreciated that in-vehicle hands free kits generally utilise a cradle to support the phone when it is used in this way adding greatly to their convenience, since the phone does not need to be worn and is restrained from movement about the vehicle.
- in-vehicle hands free kits generally have external connections to the vehicle's electric power supply and to an external aerial mounted at some convenient position about the vehicle.
- In-vehicle hands free kits have varied between fully installed and integrated units which are generally fitted by professional tradesmen, and which have permanent and hidden connection to the vehicle's power supply, and to the other peripheral components such as aerial, speaker and microphone, to those which may be termed "do-it-yourself kits which are generally less expensive and have less permanent connection especially with regard to say the external power supply.
- power can be readily accessed for the hands free kit by means of a lead and connector which is simply connected or inserted into the vehicle's cigarette lighter socket and hence connected to the battery, the lead from the connector to the hands free kit not being hidden as in the aforementioned professional installation.
- other connections to peripheral components are generally of a less permanent nature.
- an in-vehicle hands free kit comprising an in-vehicle receptacle for receiving a mobile phone, said receptacle having a set of contact means to mate with corresponding external contact means of the mobile phone in order to provide electrical contact therebetween, said set of contact means being connected to electric circuit means including an electromagnetic signal transceiver means, said in-vehicle receptacle having means to engage the mobile phone to restrain it from separating therefrom, and an electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means locatable within cabin of the vehicle, wherein said electromagnetic signal transceiver means communicates with said electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means.
- the electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means has a solar power supply connected thereto.
- the electric circuit means is located within the in-vehicle receptacle.
- the solar power supply comprises a solar recharging panel which maintains the charge of a battery means and is on the same body as the microphone.
- a speaker is preferably provided in the in-vehicle receptacle, the speaker being connected to the electric circuit means.
- the electric circuit means is partially located within the electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means remote from the in-vehicle receptacle and in the in-vehicle receptacle.
- a combined mobile phone and an in-vehicle hands free kit comprising an in-vehicle receptacle for receiving said mobile phone, said in-vehicle receptacle having means to engage the mobile phone to restrain it from separating therefrom, said mobile phone having circuitry means contained therein or associated therewith, said circuitry means including an electromagnetic signal transceiver means, and an electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means locatable within cabin of the vehicle, wherein said electromagnetic signal transceiver means contained within or associated therewith the mobile phone communicates with said electromagnetic signal microphone transceiver/transducer means.
- the electromagnetic signal is radio frequency but can be infra red frequency, as well as other frequencies as required.

- Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the solar powered solar hands free radio frequency/infra red transceiver and microphone of Fig. 2
- Fig. 4 is an exploded perspective view showing the solar powered solar hands free radio frequency/infra red transceiver and microphone being attached in the cabin of a motor vehicle,
- Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective schematic view of an in-vehicle hands free kit according to another embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 6 is a front perspective view of a solar powered solar hands free radio frequency/infra red transceiver and microphone of Fig. 5,
- Fig. 7 is a rear perspective view of the solar powered solar hands free radio frequency/infra red transceiver and microphone of Fig. 5, and
- Fig. 8 is an underside perspective view of a solar powered solar hands free radio frequency/infra red transceiver and microphone of Fig. 5.
- an in-vehicle hands free kit 11 includes an in-vehicle cradle 12.
- the cradle 12 is preferably made from moulded plastics material and has a conventional mounting device 13 and an internal body compartment 14 into which electric circuits, including an electromagnetic signal (preferably radio or infra red frequencies) transceiver means (not illustrated), are located.
- a set of contacts (not illustrated) is located on the cradle 12 in the conventional manner such that a mobile phone 15 when received in the cradle 12 has its contacts 16 in engagement with the contacts of the cradle 12.
- the cradle 12 also preferably has conventional means to restrain the mobile phone 15 in engagement with the cradle 12.
- the hands free kit 11 further includes a solar powered electromagnetic signal (preferably radio or infra red frequencies) microphone transducer and transceiver 17 generally referred to as the "microphone".
- a solar powered electromagnetic signal preferably radio or infra red frequencies
- the "microphone” 17 includes a housing 18 having a microphone device 19 fitted thereto at its lower corner edge.
- the microphone device 19 is connected to circuitry including transducing and power supply circuitry including batteries (not illustrated) which are contained within the housing 18.
- the housing 18 also has a solar panel 20 which swings out from a hinge 21 located at the rear side 23 of the housing.
- the solar panel 20 can swing out to optimise the angle to the sun.
- the solar panel 20 is used to recharge the battery in the housing 18 which powers the "microphone" 17.
- a supplementary recharging port 22 is located on the side edge of the housing 18 to recharge at night or at any time when required.
- the front side 24 of the housing 18 is adapted to be fitted or attached to the rear vision mirror 25 which is itself attached to the windscreen 26 of a motor vehicle by means of clips, double sided tape, Velcro ® tabs or the like (not illustrated).
- a speaker 27 is optionally provided underneath the cradle 12, the speaker being electrically connected to the electrical circuitry in the compartment 14.
- the hands free kit 11 is provided to have a less expensive installation than a conventional kit as there is no need for extra wiring to be installed to a remotely located microphone device.
- the "microphone” 17 of the present invention is easily attached to the rear vision mirror 25, or any other suitable location, and as it is powered from solar energy, it is efficient in that the batteries do not have to be continually replaced.
- the "microphone” 17 preferable transmits and receives radio/infra red transmissions to and from the circuitry in the cradle 12, however it is within the scope of the present invention for those transmissions to be from the "microphone" 17 to the cradle 12 only. It is also seen that the hands free kit 11 as described above can easily be transferred from one vehicle to the other without the assistance of professional installers as no extra wiring is required.
- another embodiment of the present invention includes an in-vehicle hands free kit 31 having a cradle 32 for receiving a mobile phone.
- the cradle 32 is similar to the previously described embodiment in that it is preferably made from moulded plastics material. This cradle 32 is different from the cradle 12 in that the cradle 32 does not include an internal body compartment to hold the hands free circuitry and therefore its size is somewhat reduced from that of cradle 12.
- the cradle 32 can be installed by means of brackets, Velcro ® tabs, double sided tape and the like. Due to the reduction in size of the cradle 32, its installation is substantially simplified and can therefore be installed in locations which have hitherto been unavailable due to the bulky nature of cradles and brackets etc.
- the in-vehicle hands free kit 31 also includes a housing 33 remote from the cradle 32.
- the housing 33 is adapted to be fitted to the rear vision mirror of the vehicle as it is noted that vision is blocked on account of the mirror, so the housing 33 may as well also occupy this space.
- the housing 33 is wedged shaped and has a ledge 34 which fits over the rear vision mirror with a notch 35 located therein so that it fits around the bracket of the mirror.
- the housing 33 holds all the circuitry (not illustrated) associated with the hands free kit as well as a microphone 36 and a speaker 37.
- Solar panels 38 are located at the rear of the housing 33 and can be fixed or hingedly attached.
- a supplementary charging port 39 is located at the side in a similar manner to the other embodiment. It is noted that as the circuitry contained within the housing 33, including the speaker etc, requires more power than the circuitry that is contained in the "microphone" 17 of the other embodiment, the size of the solar panels 38 is somewhat larger in this embodiment.
- This embodiment is different to the other described embodiment in that most of the circuitry associated with the hands free kit is not contained within the cradle 32 but is remote at the housing 33.
- the circuitry in the remote housing 33 can be the same for all makes and models of mobile phones as the minimal digitising circuitry in the cradle 32 can be particular for each make and model to provide the manipulation of the signals to obtain the same radio or infra red frequency transmission for equivalent signals.
- the location of the speaker 37 within the remote housing 33, behind the rear vision mirror, also provides an advantage that there is no need to locate the speaker in substantially inaccessible locations behind the dashboard of the vehicle.
- the minimal circuitry contained within the cradle 32 can be located in mobile phone itself removing the necessity of having a cradle. In this arrangement the phone is simply held by a "cradle" with no electrical connections being made thereto. The phone simply communicates with the circuitry in the remote housing 33 with voice being transduced by the microphone 36 and speaker 37.
- a supply jack (not illustrated) from the "cigarette lighter” socket. This jack is used to provide power to the phone to charge it while it is in the cradle 32 and to provide power to the minimal circuitry that is in some examples located in the cradle 32.
