Definitions
- the present invention relates to a pipe junction with at least two convergent pipes through which flow flows in the same direction and a flange plate serving to connect to a collecting pipe, the pipes having a non-circular cross-section at the ends and lying flat against one another in this area over part of their circumference, and the pipes of the further ends are received in an opening of the flange plate and connected to it.
- the present invention relates to a corresponding pipe junction, in which the pipes are received directly at the end in an opening of the header pipe.
- Pipe assemblies of this type are used, for example, in the context of exhaust systems for motor vehicles.
- a pipe junction corresponding to the preamble of claim 1 is known from US-A-2847819.
- EP-A-0744537 is also to be mentioned as the relevant prior art.
- an exhaust manifold corresponding to the preamble of claim 3 is known, for example, from international patent application WO 97/04221;
- German utility model 9100867 also discloses a pipe junction in which two pipes open directly into a header pipe.
- the two tubes here each have a flattened end; their cross section is approximately D-shaped. they are inserted at the end into the round or oval cross section and welded to it.
- German laid-open specification 3503148 discloses an arrangement for the articulated, tight connection of multi-flow lines.
- the joint halves formed by the line ends which are directed towards one another and are to be connected to one another lie along an approximately dome-shaped ring surface with the interposition of a sealing ring and are pivotably guided on all sides relative to one another. With the help of a sealing strip, it is ensured that, even in the area of the articulated connection of the multi-flow lines, these are separated from one another in terms of flow.
- the present invention has for its object to provide a tube merging of the generic type which is improved in terms of its operational strength compared to the prior art and which can be produced inexpensively with minimal effort.
- this object is achieved in that the opening of the flange plate or the collecting tube, into which the tubes protrude, has inwardly directed projections which protrude into the gusset formed between two tubes. It is therefore important that the opening, depending on the number of tubes that are brought together, has two or more inward projections that protrude into the gusset formed between two tubes.
- the opening of the flange plate or the collecting tube is given an approximately “spectacle-shaped” shape in the case of two converging tubes; with three or more converging pipes, the shape of the opening may be reminiscent of a "cloverleaf".
- the formability of the abutting ends of the tubes is significantly cheaper in the tube assembly according to the invention than in the prior art. This is because the tube wall does not have to pass from the flattened areas to the adjacent areas with a minimal bending radius, that is to say almost a kink at right angles, as is the case for the prior art applies; on the contrary, it is possible to provide generously dimensioned transition radii between the flattened areas and the adjacent peripheral regions of the tubes, with the described result of improved tube formability with a simultaneously reduced risk of damage during manufacture and operation.
- the notch effect which is considerably reduced compared to the prior art, due to increased bending radii makes a significant contribution to increasing the operational strength.
- the pipe merging according to claim 1 is further characterized in that the individual pipes do not have to be connected to one another by longitudinal welds arranged in the region of the gusset. Nor do the pipes need to be welded together on the end face before they are inserted into the flange plate; because the end faces of the pipes, even after they have been inserted into the flange plate, are very easily accessible through the opening of the flange plate, so that the corresponding weld can be carried out after the pipes have been inserted into the flange plate. In this way it is excluded that the pipes are distorted during the assembly of the pipe junction. This eliminates the need to rework the pipes.
- the tubes can also be attached to the flange plate using a easily weldable seam can be connected through the opening of the flange plate.
- the reduction in welding work that is possible compared to the prior art manifests itself in an improved operational strength of the pipe junction according to the invention.
- a single circumferential weld seam and a weld seam connecting the abutting end edges of the pipes are sufficient to produce a reliably sealed and permanently strong pipe joint, which also withstands extreme mechanical loads, in particular a corresponding exhaust manifold.
- the above statements apply in a corresponding manner to a pipe merging according to claim 3, provided that the collecting pipe is made relatively short, possibly even expanded in a funnel shape. In this sense, according to a preferred development of the invention, the collecting pipe can even be formed by the inlet funnel of a downstream exhaust gas treatment device. This leads to a minimal number of components of the entire exhaust system with corresponding cost advantages.
- the present invention includes those exhaust manifolds or other pipe junctions in which one and the same flange plate is provided for two or more pairs, triplets or the like of converging pipes, for example so-called “4 in 2 manifolds", “6 in 2-” Manifold “and” 6 in 3-manifold.
- Fig. 1 shows a first pipe junction after the
- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pipe junction of FIG. 1 from the direction of the flange plate (arrow A) and
- a second pipe junction according to the invention with two pipes opening into a collecting pipe, each in a perspective view.
- the two tubes 1 and 2 comprises two converging tubes 1 and a flange plate 2.
- the two tubes 1 have a round cross section in the region of their free course. However, they are flattened at the ends, in such a way that they abut each other along a flat contact surface 3. Adjacent to the flats defining the common contact surface 3, the tubes merge into the respective outer peripheral region 4 with a generously dimensioned bending radius R.
- the flange plate 2 has an opening 5. This is dimensioned so that the two tubes 1 abutting along the contact surface 3 can be inserted into them.
- the shape of the opening 5 is adapted to the two joined tubes in such a way that two inward projections 6 protrude into the gusset 7 formed between the two tubes. in the the other corresponds to the approximately "glasses-shaped" contour of the opening 5 of the flange plate 2 essentially the course of the outer peripheral surfaces 4 of the two tubes.
- the two pipes are connected to the flange plate and to one another at the end face by means of a weld seam 8.
- the pipe merging according to Figures 3 and 4 comprises two converging pipes 1, which protrude at the end into a header pipe; in other words, they are received at the end in an opening 10 of the collecting tube 9.
- the cross-sectional shape of the tubes 1 in the region of their ends projecting into the collecting tube 9 essentially corresponds to the cross-sectional design of the tubes in the tube merging according to FIGS. 1 and 2.
- the tubes 1 go adjacent to the flat areas defining the common contact surface 3 with a generously dimensioned area Bending radius R in the respective outer peripheral region 4, which corresponds to an essentially round cross section. In this way, there are two pronounced gussets 7 between the two tubes 1 at the end.
- the collecting tube 9 has two inward projections 11 which protrude into the two gussets 7.
- the two inwardly directed projections 11 of the collecting tube are formed by inwardly directed indentations 12 of the wall of the collecting tube 9.
- the collecting tube 9 is widened in a funnel shape in the flow direction D. It is formed by the Inlet funnel of a downstream exhaust system.
- a radially outwardly directed flange 14 is provided in the region of the wide opening 13 of the manifold 9, which serves to connect the funnel-shaped manifold to a housing part of the downstream exhaust gas treatment device, the radially outwardly directed flange 14 evidently not being mandatory in any case, but rather, for example could be replaced by an axial connector.
- the end faces of the tubes 1 are still accessible after the tubes 1 have been inserted into the collecting tube 9.
- the weld seam 8, with which the tubes 1 are connected to the header tube 9, is arranged on the inner wall of the header tube.
