Abstract

The stay comprises an external support-tube (1) in which can axially slide over a certain length a height-adjusting screw (3), axially actuated by a rotating nut (6a, 6b). To prevent said screw (3) from rotating when the nut (6a, 6b) rotates and from accidentally coming apart when the whole assembly is being manipulated, said screw (3) is made angularly integral with the external tube (1) by means (19a, 20a; 19b, 20b) which also prevent the screw (3) from having a too long and unwanted travel. Thus the screw cannot rotate when the nut (6a, 6b) is actuated while the external tube (1) is manually blocked and the screw (3) cannot accidentally come out of the external tube (1) when the whole assembly is manipulated.

The forestay shown in the drawing comprises a tube 1 forming a support and provided at one of its ends with a foot 2 intended to rest on the ground. A screw 3, tubular, is disposed axially in the tube 1. This screw is provided at its upper end with a support plate 4 similar to 2. The lower end of this screw has no thread over a certain length, this is to prevent the forestay from being used beyond its maximum admissible extension. The screw 3 passes through a head 5 intended to rotate on the upper end of the tube 1.
Inside the rotating head 5 are arranged two angular nut parts 6a, 6b each extending over an angle equal to or less than 180 °. Each of these nut parts is elongated and has only a small number (two in the example shown) of thread portions 7a, 7b, in the vicinity of its lower end.
The tube 1 has, at its upper part, an annular flare 8 which has two functions. On the one hand, its conical interior (fig. 4) receives the load from the forestay and presses the conical lower end of the nut parts 6a, 6b, against the screw 3, thus ensuring the engagement of the portions of threads 7a, 7b of the nut parts 6a, 6b in the thread of the screw 3, when the members are in the position according to FIG. 4. On the other hand, two symmetrical hooks 9a, 9b (fig. 2 and 3) located at the lower ends of the depressions 10a, 10b symmetrical of the head 5 come into contact with the outside of the flare 8, to retain the head 5 on tube 1, when transporting the forestay while keeping it tilted, head down.
3).The depressions 10a, 10b have the function of ensuring the centering of the head 5 on the screw 3 (fig. 3).
1 et 3).The nut parts 6a, 6b are each secured, respectively, to a pair of lugs 11a, 11b passing through holes in the head 5, arms 12a, 12b, are pivotally mounted each on the outer part of one of the pairs of legs 11a, 11b, respectively (fig. 1 and 3).
5.As seen in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, the head 5 has the shape of an oval bell flaring downwards, the ovalization being parallel to the axis of the center of the parts of the nuts so that the upper end of the parts of nuts 6a, 6b, is located between the upper part of this head and the screw 3, with a very small play, while downwards, the play is a little more important, allowing it only a limited oscillation, as the shows the difference between fig. 4 and fig. 5.
4.In fig. 4 we see the head 5 in its lower position, or working, where the outer conical lower ends of the nut parts 6a, 6b, are fully engaged in the conical inner part of the flare 8. This position is acquired automatically by the gravity exerted on the legs 11a, 11b and on the arms 12a, 12b. To bring the head 5 into the release position of the screw shown in FIG. 5, the following means are provided. On the head 14a, 14b of the arms 12a, 12b, a part 15a, 15b, forms a cam which comes, by oscillating the arms 12a, 12b, more than 90 ° upwards, in contact with the stops 17a, 17b , provided on the outer part of the nut parts 6a, 6b, in their part located between the tabs 11a, 11b (fig. 5a). The meeting of these two cams 15a, 15b, with the stops 17a, 17b, of the parts of nuts 6a, 6b, makes the arms 12a, 12b, parts of nuts 6a, 6b, which allows, continuing pushing the arms 12a, 12b upwards, to impart to the lower part of the nut parts 6a, 6b, a circular rocking movement, but which can be qualified as substantially horizontal, given its very small amplitude. This movement brings the parts of nuts 6a, 6b, in the released position according to fig. 5, the support points being located at 18a, 18b. These support points 18a, 18b, being without thread, therefore smooth, nothing retains the screw and it falls by gravity into its lower position where the plate 4 approaches substantially the head 5. As soon as we stop push the arms 12a, 12b, upwards, the head 5 and the nut parts 6a, 6b, automatically return to the position according to fig. 4.
To avoid any risk of the screw escaping from the nut parts 6a, 6b and from the head 5 (and therefore also from the tube 1) during transport of the forestay in an inclined position, the head towards below, the following security means are provided.
A groove 13 is formed in the outer and lower part of the nut parts 6a, 6b, and a split circular wire spring 16 of the circlip type is placed in this groove, to constantly urge these nut parts to remain constantly in engagement with the thread of the screw 3. Since the screw 3 is constantly attached to the head 5, the two symmetrical hooks 9a, 9b, of the said head automatically abut against the outer part of the flare 8, preventing any accidental dislocation of screw 3 when transporting the forestay inclined head down. It is only when desired that the nut parts 6a, 6b are disconnected from the screw 3 and for this, it is necessary to act on the arms 12a, 12b, as described above.
5.The threads of the screw 3 have sides of different inclination, as shown and explained in the publications cited in the introduction to this description. The lower half of the thread has a fairly leaky oblique tangent to the axis of the screw. The purpose of this part of the thread is to drive the parts of nuts 6a, 6b outward when the screw is given an upward movement, which allows the said screw to be brought quickly and effortlessly close to the working position of the plate 4. During this rise of the screw 3, the lower part of the flanks of the threading of the said screw brings the parts of nuts 6a, 6b, in the position according to fig. 5.
The upper half of the thread consists substantially of a quarter-circle profile whose tangent, in the upper part thereof, is substantially perpendicular to the axis of the screw. Its role is to retain the load that will be applied to the forestay when it is in the working position.
Large displacements of the screw 3, in both directions, can be carried out quickly, without the need to turn the nut. Only the fine adjustment is made by a very brief rotation of the head 5, in principle, at most one revolution and a few degrees.
The safety devices 8, 9 automatically prevent the head 5 from accidentally leaving the support tube 1, and the safety device 16 automatically prevents the screw 3 from leaving the head 5, during transport of the inclined forestay, head down.
The known construction described so far has, despite its advantages, a defect which the present invention remedies. This defect consists in this: When the head 5 is rotated to bring, during the fine adjustment, the plate 4 to the upper working position, the screw 3 also rotates, which naturally prevents the forestay from acquiring its desired length . When the part of the screw 3 located above the head 5 is within reach of the hand, it suffices to tighten the screw 3 with one hand to immobilize it angularly and thus bring the forestay to the desired length by turning the other hand the head 5. When using long struts, where the part of the screw 3 located immediately above the head 5 is out of reach of the operator's hand, the operator must climb on a step or on trestles to be able to bring the forestay to the desired length, which is obviously not very practical.
We will now describe, with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7 an embodiment of the forestay according to the present invention.
Pour simplifier on n'a pas représenté les filets de la vis 3.FIG. 6 schematically shows, in axial section, the screw 3 inside the tube 1 provided with the foot 2. For simplicity, the threads of the screw 3 have not been shown.
It is formed in the tube 1, by mechanical action, two rectilinear longitudinal grooves, 19a, 19b, arranged symmetrically and extending from the end welded to the plate 2 up to a certain distance from the conical flare 8.
The screw 3 is provided, at its lower non-threaded end, with two short symmetrical bulges 20a, 20b, engaged, during manufacture, each in one of the gorges 19a, 19b. These bulges are produced by mechanical action when the screw 3 is engaged in the tube 1.
The cooperation of the bulges 20a, 20b with the grooves 19a, 19b prevents the screw 3 from rotating relative to the tube 1. To prevent the screw 3 from being rotated by the head 5, it is sufficient to immobilize the tube 1 in squeezing it by hand. The projections 21a, 21b formed by the grooves 19a, 19b, on the outer surface of the tube 1 provide a more comfortable grip for the operator and therefore facilitate the angular immobilization of the tube 1. Thus, during actuation of the head 5, the plates 2 and 4 remain angularly stationary.
In this example, the screw 3 cannot be dismantled and separated from the tube 1, which may be an advantage from the point of view of safety but a disadvantage in the event of necessary repair.
Dans les variantes selon fig. 8 et 9, la construction permet, en cas de besoin, d'extraire la vis 3 du tube 1.In the variants according to fig. 8 and 9, the construction allows, if necessary, to extract the screw 3 from the tube 1.
To this end, the bulges 20a, 20b of FIG. 6 are replaced by the following means: a circular plate 21 of equal diameter, apart from the clearance, the inside diameter of the non-threaded lower part of the screw 3, is introduced into this end and welded to the latter. Two symmetrical threaded holes 22a, 22b pass through this plate 21. A second plate, 23, of generally rectangular shape, the rounded ends of which coincide with the external surface of the end of the screw 3, is applied against the plate 21 and against the end face of the screw 3, by means of two screws 24a, 24b. Two bumps 25a, 25b are arranged at the ends of the plate 23 and protrude outside the outside diameter of the lower part of the screw 3. The size of these bumps corresponds, apart from play, to that of the grooves 19a, 19b, in which they are engaged to angularly secure the tube 1 and the screw 3.
Two non-threaded holes 33a, 33b pass through the plate 23, their axes coincide with those of the threaded holes 22a, 22b. The screws 24a, 24b pass freely through the holes 33a, 33b and are screwed into the threaded holes 22a, 22b. In the second variant, shown in FIG. 10, the plates 21 and 23 of FIGS. 8 and 9 are replaced by two parts 26, 30. The part 26 has a cylindrical extension 26a passing through a hole 3a made in the lower part of the screw 3. This part 26a ends in a rounded head 28a playing the same role as 25a (fig. 8, 9). The part 30 is of generally cylindrical shape and can slide in a corresponding hole 29 in the part 26, to reach the position shown in FIG. 10, where it passes through a hole 3b of the screw 3, symmetrical to 3a. The right end in this figure 10 of this part 30 ends with a rounded head 28b playing the same role as 25b (fig. 8 and 9). When the parts 26 and 30 have been placed exactly in the interior of the screw, they are immobilized by means of a needle screw 31 engaged in a transverse threaded hole 32 of the part 26, so that its end point 33 is engaged in a circular groove 34 of the part 30. To allow easy insertion of the two ends 28a, 28b in the holes 3a, 3b, a spiral spring 35 is housed in the cavity 29 of the part 26, so that the two ends 28a, 28b are automatically placed in the holes 3a, 3b, during assembly or reassembly.
