Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a device for controlling the accumulation and supply of yarn feeding textile looms, e.g. the supplier of weft yarn in shuttleless looms.
  • weft supply regulators One of the principal requirements of weft supply regulators is guaranteeing rapid and regular feed of the weft yarn to the loom. This is generally achieved by having a number of buffer coils of yarn wound onto a cylindrical drum; this buffer yarn allows the tension of the yarn running out of the device to be maintained substantially constant independently of wide variations in tension found in the yarn entering the device. These differences in tension of the yarn being collected from the feeding spool are caused by the large difference between the diameter of the spool when full of yarn (around 20-25 cm.) and the diameter of the empty spool (around 4-6 cm.).
  • the drum is provided with external surface grooves that maintain the coils separate during the continuous winding and unwinding of the buffer yarn onto and off the drum.
  • one or more photosensors are provided that detect the presence of the yarn in one or more pre-set axial positions along the drum. These sensors enable an electric motor that sets the drum in rotation to collect yarn from the feeder spool in a such way as to maintain a substantially constant buffer supply on the same drum as the yarn is gradually supplied to the loom.
  • the photosensors are generally placed in proximity to the end where the yarn is taken off the device, and are directed toward the surface of the drum where they require a smooth reflecting surface in order to be able to detect the absence of yarn. In this situation, incidental light is reflected toward the photosensor; when there is yarn on the smooth surface, the incidental light is not reflected toward the photosensor.
