Verfahren zum selektiven Abtragen einer oder mehrerer SchichtenProcess for the selective removal of one or more layers
The invention relates to a method for the selective removal of one or more layers.
The technical field of application of the invention comprises tasks for removing layers from a substrate to be preserved in the technical and restoration area. In particular, the aim is to remove layers, if necessary locally delimited, but in any case without adversely affecting the properties of the surface on which the layer to be removed is located.
Laser ablation can be carried out using several mechanisms. Some of the mechanisms described below work in the complex.
DE 690 16 051 T2.The dominant process is removal by slice-wise evaporation of the layer to be removed by means of short laser pulses. The number of pulses is selected depending on the layer thickness and the removal rate (e.g. volume / time to be removed) so that the surface is exposed (Fig. 1). However, laser ablation can also be carried out by thermally induced shock waves, e.g. in the case of brittle materials, or are supported thereby (FIG. 2). This process is the subject of EP 0 380 387 B and DE 690 16 051 T2.
In a number of layer systems that occur, further options for stripping are given if the thermal properties, in particular the expansion coefficients, of the layer to be removed and of the substrate differ greatly from one another. The removal or stripping then takes place by chipping off parts of the layer as a result of the thermal voltages generated by means of laser (FIG. 3).
There are also good prerequisites for selective decoating without affecting the substrate if the melting or evaporation temperatures of the layer to be removed by means of a laser are significantly below the melting or vaporization temperature of the substrate to be preserved (Fig. 4). The method described in US Pat. No. 4,756,765 is based on this. Another option for laser ablation of layers, eg organic substances from metal surfaces, is to use lasers of short wavelength (UV range). The removal of the layer is then based on breaking chemical bonds (photon energy is greater than the binding energy of the chemical bond) (Fig. 5). This principle is based, for example, on patent EP-A-0 233 755.
The disadvantages of the prior art lie in the low ablation rate (volume or mass / time or area / time), since ablation always requires a large number of laser pulses per active site, especially in the case of layers thick in relation to the wavelength of the laser.
Furthermore, the chance of low-damage erosion is reduced if the optical and / or thermal properties of the layer and the substrate approach each other more and more.
One tries to counter this disadvantage partly with on-line process control, as described for example in DE 43 20 895 A1. In addition to increasing the technical effort, limitations in the range of applications are to be mentioned as disadvantages.
There are no possibilities for selective stripping, and there is absolutely no self-regulating process limitation if the substrate has a higher absorption and / or a lower thermal destruction threshold than the layer to be removed compared to the available wavelength of the laser. This disadvantage is very common because the available laser wavelengths are very limited. This problem is also referred to in the patents EP 0 380 387 B and DE 690 16 051 and the use of a wavelength-tunable color laser for generating shock waves for removal is proposed. The disadvantage here is that at such high intensities, as are required to produce erosion-generating shock waves, the absorption properties of a material compared to light of lower intensity play an increasingly minor role, since light of such high intensity due to non-linear processes when interacting with material from almost everyone Material is absorbed and there is no longer any selectivity between the layer and the substrate. Another disadvantage is that, even with the current state of the art, the dye laser principle is unable to produce sufficient average powers for technical applications of laser cleaning. Even pulse peak outputs, such as those required to generate a shock wave, are not possible with dye lasers or only with great effort. Furthermore, the patent specification DE 690 16 051 presupposes that the absorption spectra of the layer and contaminated material are known, but this is usually not currently the case for many materials in the wavelength ranges in question. It is the object of the invention to propose a method for the selective removal of one or more layers with which the disadvantages of the prior art mentioned are overcome.
Accordingly, the object of the invention is in particular to provide a method of the type mentioned, with which the removal rate is increased and the selectivity between the layer or layers to be removed and the substrate or the one or more further layers to be obtained is significantly improved.
According to the invention, the object is achieved with a method according to one or more of claims 1 to 25.
The method is carried out using lasers or laser systems with self-regulating process limitation. This method is characterized according to the invention in that the removal is carried out during short (preferably in the μs range or below) interaction times with laser light of such a wavelength that the laser light from one part of the overall composite (either the layer or layers to be removed or the substrate to be obtained or the one or more further layers to be obtained) is absorbed so strongly that the removal threshold (preferably evaporation and / or decomposition threshold) of the respective material is exceeded and that the absorption of the laser light at the same intensity by the respective other Part of the overall network (either the subsoil to be preserved or the one or more layers to be preserved or the layer or layers to be removed) is so small that this removal threshold is not reached.
The specific advantage of laser ablation, which is used here, is that there is a self-regulating process limitation and thus prevention of damage to the substrate to be obtained if it absorbs the wavelength of the incident laser radiation less than the layer to be removed and the energy density of the laser beam is set so that it lies between the threshold energy densities of the layer and the subsurface <E L , ser <E SchweMUtergrund ). The evaporation threshold, e.g. of the subsurface, is therefore no longer reached, since the majority of the incident radiation is either absorbed in such a large volume that the energy densities related to the subsurface material volume are no longer sufficient for ablation, or the majority of the incident laser light reflects off the subsurface or is let through. An advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention provides that the optical properties of the layer or layers to be removed and the respective substrate to be obtained or the one or more layers to be obtained are first determined as a function of the wavelength of the laser light, for example by determination the wavelength-dependent optical constants using spectroscopic methods. From the absorption coefficients calculated from this, the wavelength range is determined for which the conditions set out for a self-regulating process limitation apply. Then the removal takes place with very short interaction times with laser light of this wavelength.
The process steps mentioned in the process according to the invention can be carried out batchwise or continuously.
Short alternation times of action can be achieved by short pulse lasers and / or by very high relative speeds between the laser beam and the material surface.
A special embodiment variant of the method is the generation of the short light pulses by means of a wavelength-tunable laser system, e.g. of a Nd: YAG OPO system.
A variant of the method according to the invention provides that at the boundary between the layer or layers to be removed and the substrate to be obtained or the one or more further layers to be obtained, a small amount of material of the layer to be removed or the surface properties which does not lead to any disadvantageous change in properties The substrate is suddenly evaporated by high-energy laser radiation with short exposure times of preferably <1 μs.
The layer above is blown off by the expanding steam at the boundary between the surfaces of the layer and the substrate. Thin layers can also only be evaporated.
A principle of this variant of the solution according to the invention is shown in FIG. 6. The lateral extent of the active site can be determined by the size of the working spot of the laser beam (active spot diameter), for example by focusing or defocusing, so that, depending on the thickness of the layer to be removed, very filigree structures can also be removed. It is advantageous here that both a small volume of the layer to be removed and of the substrate to be preserved can be used for removal. Only one component of the layer system needs to have a higher transmission than the other for the laser radiation used, ie it must be more transmissive for some of the laser radiation. This is achieved by selecting suitable laser systems, the wavelength of which meets this condition. In addition to fixed-wavelength lasers, wavelength-tunable systems, such as Nd: YAG lasers with OPO, can also be used to advantage here. The explosive effect in the principle of the removal according to FIG. 6 is possibly further increased by the heating of the steam which takes place as a result of absorption of part of the laser pulse energy.
The advantage of the solution according to the invention is, in particular, that the conditions for completely low-risk laser ablation can be set for almost all technical layer systems, that the method can be carried out in a much larger parameter range and that the effort for one-line process control can be eliminated. Laser ablation and laser cleaning is also possible with little risk in the area of monument preservation. Devices suitable for the preservation of historical monuments should be equipped with an articulated arm or with one or more optical fibers for beam transmission for the free movement of the laser beam according to the surface topography of the object to be processed. In the case of devices which can be tuned in wavelength, the need to adapt the beam guidance to the different wavelengths must be taken into account, e.g. through interchangeable mirror sets in the articulated arm or through several optical fibers.
The method according to the invention is to be explained in more detail using the following exemplary embodiments.
1. Ausführungsbeispiel1st embodiment
2. AusführungsbeispielThe principle of this exemplary embodiment is outlined in FIG. 7. On a wooden board (1) with the thickness (2) there is an applied layer (3) with the layer thickness (4) that is to be removed. When irradiated with an Nd: YAG pulse laser beam (5) with a pulse length of 6 ns, a pulse energy of 300 mJ, a frequency of 20 Hz and a working spot diameter (6) of d w = 4 mm according to that in this exemplary embodiment (exclusively 7), the layer is removed in slices after a number of approx. 30 pulses, ie in a time of approx. 1.5 s, up to the surface (7) of the wooden panel. The diameter of the removed surface (8) corresponds approximately to the working spot diameter. Because of the low absorption and the high reflection of the wood for the wavelength of the Nd: YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm), the wood surface is not removed. 2nd embodiment
The principle of this exemplary embodiment is outlined in FIGS. 7 and 8. On a glass pane (1) with the thickness (2) there is an applied layer (3) with the layer thickness (4). When irradiated with an Nd: YAG pulse laser beam (5) with a pulse length of 6 ns, a pulse energy of 260 mJ, a frequency of 20 Hz and a working spot diameter (6) of d w = 2 mm according to that shown in FIG. 7 Process variant, the layer is removed in slices after a number of approx. 20 pulses, ie in a time of approx. 1 s, up to the surface (7) of the glass pane. The diameter of the removed surface (8) corresponds approximately to the working spot diameter. The glass surface is not removed due to the high transmission of the glass for the wavelength of the Nd: YAG laser.
Fig. 8).
When using the method according to the invention, the laser treatment takes place through the glass pane with the same beam parameters as in FIG. 7, but only with a pulse energy of 250 mJ. The evaporation of a small amount of material between the layer above the glass surface (7) and the glass surface causes the entire layer to break off in a diameter range (9) which, depending on the brittleness of the layer, is slightly or even significantly above that of the working spot diameter (6) ( see Fig. 8). The removal rate is consequently increased by more than a factor of 20 with the same quality.
