Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for structured metallization of the surface of polymeric substrates for the production of fine conductor circuits, being on the surface of the substrate, a base layer is applied over the entire surface, then by one in the area of the insulation channels to be introduced, acting short-wave electromagnetic Radiation, preferably in the UV range, in particular a laser, into the base layer Insulation channels can be incorporated by completely removing the base layer, and subsequently the remaining structured base layer in an electroless one Metallization bath is provided with metallic conductor tracks.
The main disadvantage here is that the removal of the relatively thick copper layer is accompanied by a heat development, the the edge sharpness of the structures produced adversely affected.
In the magazine "Galvanotechnik 84" (1993), No. 2, pages 570 ff., The article "Production of flexible circuits with Bayprint - a future-oriented technology" Described method that works without exposure and without etching. Here is one Polymer surface with a primer, i.e. H. with an adhesion-promoting layer, in Screen printing process printed. The conductor track structures are already here by a structured coating with the primer. The primer is non-conductive, is liable good on the polymer surface and shows a drying process A porous structure on top, which is then firmly anchored metal layer deposited without current. The metal layer then forms the Conductor track. This method has the advantage that it is relatively easy to do handle, but it is due to the application of screen printing on conductor widths and distances between the insulation channels of greater than 100 microns.
From EP 0 727 925 it has also become known that the surface of the Substrate a primer layer in the area of a metal layer to be applied later to be applied over the entire surface and by one acting in certain areas electromagnetic radiation in the UV range, in particular an excimer laser with relative high energy density, insulation channels through complete direct into the primer layer To incorporate removal, followed by the remaining structured primer layer for the formation of conductor tracks in an electroless metallization bath with a Metal layer is provided.
The invention has for its object to provide a method that High-resolution structured metallization of the surface of substrates, in particular of printed circuit boards, quickly and economically.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features of claim 1. The a further embodiment of the invention can be found in the subclaims.
By using a metallic layer structure as a base layer on the substrate in a maximum Thickness is applied, which is the photon penetration depth of the acting electro corresponds to magnetic radiation, and by the energy density of the electromagnetic Radiation is set so that the metallic layer structure without ablation radiates and the energy essentially at the phase boundary to the polymer Is absorbed substrate, the effect can be achieved that in the area of action of electromagnetic radiation a plasma forming the metallic layer structure with the formation of isolation channels very high contour sharpness removed without residue. As such, it was not to be expected that a short-wave electro magnetic radiation a high-resolution and sharp-edged structuring of a metallic layer structure in the fine conductor area is possible.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the metallic Layer structure in a thickness of 5 to 500 nm, preferably in a thickness of 10 to 100 nm applied. As has been shown, it is completely surprising that this is below one Metallic layer structure of this small thickness plasma apparently to do so in is able to remove the layer structure without residue, advantageously extremely sharp edges are formed. So they are extremely clean Cutting edges can be achieved that were previously unattainable.
The layer structure is of a catalytic effect in the electroless metallization Metal formed, which makes it possible after the exposure to electromagnetic Radiation remaining structured layer structure then in an electroless Metallization bath to be provided with conductor tracks.
It can be advantageous if the metallic layer structure has two layers from one to the other the surface of the substrate applied metal adhesive film and from one on the Metal adhesive film applied, consisting of the catalytically active metal film is trained. The metal adhesive film optimizes the adhesion of the metallic one Layer structure and thus the conductor tracks on the surface of the substrate.
Sputtern aufgebracht. In the context of the invention it is provided that the layer structure or the metal film preferably consists of Au, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ag, Al or alloys of these metals. The Metal adhesive film is preferably made of Cr. The layer structure is preferably carried out by Evaporation or sputtering applied.
The metallic layer structure in the insulation channels between the later conductor tracks is preferably removed by means of a krypton fluoride excimer laser with a wavelength of 248 nm and a low energy density of 100-200 mJ / cm 2 . As has been shown, in particular when using a krypton fluoride excimer laser, it is possible to structure the finest insulation channels and conductor tracks with a width of up to approximately 5 μm. The working range extends from approx. 5 µm to approx. 200 µm, especially around 20-40 µm. As has been shown, due to the low energy input, usually only a single laser pulse is required per unit area in order to generate the structures. The method according to the invention is therefore also characterized by great speed and high economy.
It is also possible, for example, while maintaining the advantages mentioned Form isolation channels using a frequency-converted Nd: YAG solid-state laser. Here it can be z. B. a frequency-doubled Nd: YAG solid-state laser with a Wavelength of λ = 532 nm, a laser frequency of 5 kHz and an average power of about 6 W.
The isolation channels can also be tripled, for example, by means of a frequency Nd: YAG solid-state laser with a wavelength of λ = 355, a laser frequency of 5 kHz and an average power of about 0.5-1 W are formed.
Extremely fine insulation channels and Conductor tracks with a width of 5 µm to 200 µm, preferably 10 µm to 100 µm, be generated. Another advantage of the present method is the fact that using excimer lasers combined with the use of optical components, The structuring of curved substrate materials is also possible.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the electromagnetic Radiation using a mask arranged in the beam path of the excimer laser or applied by means of an imaging process. It is also possible to use the metallic Removing the layer structure in the insulation channels by means of a focused laser beam. The methods mentioned allow the laser beam to be finely structured on the to allow metallic layer structure to act.
It is also of considerable advantage that by means of the method according to the invention also spatial electronic circuit carriers, such as the inside of device housings, in the described manner can be provided with conductor tracks of extremely fine structure can. All necessary process steps are also on curved surfaces feasible without any problems. Can also be applied to the surface of a strongly curved substrate the metallic layer structure z. B. be applied by vapor deposition or sputtering. The effect of the radiation from an excimer laser can be, for example, via a accordingly shaped template also on any curved surfaces of Substrates with the greatest precision. Last but not least, the final order prepares the metal layer no problem even on curved surfaces. According to the invention it is possible to build electrical and mechanical elements on almost any shape Integrate circuit boards.
Es zeigen: An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and is in following described in more detail. Show it:
Fig. 1, einen Querschnitt durch eine Leiterplatte mit einem aufgetragenen metallischen Schichtaufbau, Fig. 1, a cross section through a printed circuit board with a deposited metallic layer structure,
Fig. 2, einen Querschnitt durch die Leiterplatte gemäß Fig. 1, mit durch die Einwirkung einer kurzwelligen elektromagnetischen Strahlung abgetragenen Isolationskanälen, FIG. 2 shows a cross section through the printed circuit board according to FIG. 1, with insulation channels removed by the action of a short-wave electromagnetic radiation,
Fig. 3, a cross section through the circuit board according to FIGS. 1 and 2, with an applied metal layer.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a substrate, ie a printed circuit board, which consists of a non-conductive polymer in a manner known per se. A metallic layer structure 2 is applied to the surface of the substrate 1 in a thickness of 5 to 500 nm, preferably in a thickness of 10 to 100 nm. The application of the metallic layer structure 2 takes place, for. B. by vapor deposition or sputtering. In the present embodiment, the metallic layer structure 2 has two layers constituted by a vapor-deposited on the substrate 1 adherent metallic film 3, and a vapor-deposited on the metal bonding film 3 metal film. 4 The metal adhesive film 3 consists, for. B. from Cr and serves to produce a secure adhesion of the metallic layer structure 2 on the substrate. 1 The metal film 4 is formed from a catalytically active metal in order to enable a later electroless metallization. In principle, however, the metallic layer structure 2 can also be constructed in one layer and be formed exclusively from a catalytically active metal. It is important that the metallic layer structure 2 is applied to the entire surface of the surface of the substrate 1 in the areas to be metallized later.
From Fig. 2 of the drawing it can be seen that the metallic layer structure 2 of the substrate 1 for structuring a short-wave electromagnetic radiation 5 z. B. is exposed to an excimer laser, not shown in the drawing. If the penetration depth of the photons is, for example, about 20 to 30 nm, the metallic layer structure 2 , provided that its thickness is less than the penetration depth of the photons, is irradiated without removal and the energy is absorbed essentially only at the phase boundary with the polymeric substrate 1 . A plasma which is formed in the area of the action of the electromagnetic radiation at the phase boundary with the polymeric substrate 1 below the metallic layer structure 2 and is not shown in the drawing then causes the metallic layer structure 2 to be removed without residue, with the formation of isolation channels 6 .
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the metallic layer structure is applied in a thickness of only 10 to 20 nm. As has been shown, the plasma which forms below a metallic layer structure of this small thickness is surprisingly capable of blasting off the layer structure without any residues, advantageously with extremely sharp edges. This means that extremely clean cutting edges can be achieved that were previously unattainable. It is thus possible to produce the finest structures in the primer layer 2 with a width of up to approximately 5 μm. When removing the metallic layer structure 2 , however, it should be noted that a later applied metal layer 7 may also be built up at the edges of the insulation channels 6 . For this reason, the insulation channels 6 have to be removed wider at each of these edges by the thickness of the applied metal layers 7 than is actually required for the insulation.
A further advantageous effect results from the fact that the metallic layer structure 2 , which is preferably applied to the substrate 1 by vapor deposition or sputtering, is adhered to the surface in a sharply delimited manner without penetrating it. It is consequently not necessary in order to remove the metallic layer structure 2 reliably and completely, in comparison to the known methods, to also remove the substrate on the surface. Ultimately, this results in the possibility of working very quickly with electromagnetic radiation 5 of such a low energy density in an extremely advantageous manner that neither a direct removal of the metallic layer structure 2 nor a polymer removal on the substrate 1 takes place. In this way, harmful deposits in the insulation channels 6 can be reliably avoided as a very positive edge effect.
The radiation 5 is limited to the region of the insulation channels 6 of the metallic layer structure 2 , for example by arranging a mask in the beam path of an excimer laser. Of course, it is also possible to remove the metallic layer structure 2 in a very finely structured manner by means of an imaging method or by means of a focused laser beam.
As shown in FIG. 3, after the metallic layer structure 2 has been removed, that is to say after the insulation channels 6 have been completed , a metal layer 7 , which forms conductor tracks 8, is applied to the remaining structures of the metallic layer structure 2 . The remaining primer geometries are metallized by means of a commercially available electroless metallization bath, a metal thickness of 2 μm being achievable in 1 second. The electroless metallization ensures an extremely uniform layer thickness. The applied metal layers 7 can also be kept extremely thin, layer thicknesses having a thickness of 0.5-30 μm, preferably 1-10 μm, being set.
