  • the present invention relates to the assembling of frames and pieces of furniture preferably of wood.
  • Another disadvantage of the conventional gluing methods is that the gluing yields in time as the adhesive does not keep its property unchanged with time and the wood undergoes, as already mentioned, natural bulking. Still another disadvantage of the gluing methods of the known art is that grooves and cracks are created at the door or window panels, especially of the heart-wood doors, as the heart-wood panel subjected to the natural bulking of the wood is blocked by the glue at its edge and by the layer of paint at the junction between upright and panel.
  • the present invention seeks to provide a method of assembling frames and/or pieces of furniture which overcomes the drawbacks of the known art eliminating the glue and allowing the several parts to be assembled in situ by fastening means not visible from the outside.
  • the method of assembling frames and doors preferably of wood provides the mechanical connection of the parts by bolts with lock washer and threaded bush. Said method, however, has the disadvantage that the head of the bolt is visible so that a product of valuable aesthetic quality cannot be manufactured.
  • the parts are connected to one another by mechanical fastening means which are received in suitable blind holes formed in the thickness of the material so as not to be visible from the outside.

  • the construction of a wing essentially includes two longitudinal side uprights 1, a upper crosspiece (headpiece) 2 and a lower crosspiece (socle) 3 and possibly further intermediate crosspieces (not shown) capable of limiting the space of the window-pane or the panel in case of wings of considerable length.
  • the several parts are tightly connected to each other by mechanical fastening means which does not require any glue.
  • the assembling method according to the invention consists of the following steps: a) forming through holes 20 capable of receiving a screw 22 in the thickness of uprights 1 and in the crosswise direction of the same; b) forming a counter-sink 24 in the holes 20 capable of receiving the head of screw 22; c) forming blind holes 26 capable of receiving the threaded end of screw 22 in the thickness of socles 3, headpieces 2 and any intermediate crosspieces in the longitudinal direction of the same; d) forming holes 30 perpendicular to the plane of socles 3 and headpieces 2 and crossing the already mentioned holes 26 for receiving a threaded bush 28 engaging the threaded end of screw 22; e) screwing said screws 22 to said bushes 28.
  • the assembling method consists of the following steps: a) forming blind holes 4 capable of receiving female expansion members 5 in the thickness of uprights l and in the crosswise direction of the same; b) forming blind holes 7 capable of receiving male bolts 6 in the thickness of socles 3, headpieces 2 and any intermediate crosspieces in the longitudinal direction of the same; c) forming blind holes 8 perpendicular to the plane of socles and headpieces and crossing the already mentioned holes 7 for receiving stop dowels 9 engaging the threaded end of bolts 6; d) screwing bolts 6 into the female expansion members 5; e) assembling headpieces 2 and socles 3 (and intermediate crosspieces, if any) to bolts 6 received in the female expansion members 5 of uprights 1; f) screwing stop dowels 9 for the final fastening of the parts.
  • the side uprights 1 may be exchanged with headpieces 2 and socles 3.
  • the side uprights 1 may be exchanged with headpieces 2 and socles 3.
  • holes 7 for bolts 6 and holes 8 for stop dowels 9 should be provided in the uprights 1 instead of headpieces 2 and socles 3.
  • a third embodiment of the invention particularly directed to the connection of parts (uprights, headpieces and socles) having ends cut at 45° provides mechanical L-shaped connecting means 10 capable of being inserted into suitable longitudinal holes 11 formed in the thickness of uprights l as well as headpieces 2 and socles 3 (and intermediate crosspieces, if any) .
  • the fastening system used in the third embodiment may also be applied to the case of uprights 1, crosspieces 2 and socles 3 facing not at 45° each other by using rectilinear connecting members 12 similar to the L-shaped connecting members 10 and replacing the already described bolts 6 having a threaded end.
  • the female expansion member 5 are suppressed (Figs. 4, 5 and 6) .
  • a first advantage is given by the easily replacement of one or more parts of the wing after their assembling without problems relative to ungluing and gluing again.
  • a second advantage is given by the possibility of painting the parts individually. This is very important especially in case of outdoor frames to which it is convenient and necessary to apply fillers and/or dip paints in order to attain a complete penetration into the pores of the wood and also through the mounting holes 7, 8 and 10.
  • a third advantage of the invention is that there is provided an assembling method which gives the panel the right allowance of the natural bulking of the wood and permits the parts to be painted individually.
  • a fourth advantage is that the window-panes for the frames according to the invention can be installed and sealed directly upon assembling the frames, thus avoiding not reliable, antiaesthetic glass stops or headpieces weakening slots for inserting the panes from above.
  • Still another advantage of the method according to the invention is the considerable reduction of carriage due to the reduced bulk.
  • a further advantage is that the frame may be delivered in a disassembled state, thus avoiding the damages due to the transportation and the storage.
  • the assembling can be made in situ by the final user without skilled labour.
  • the holes for inserting the stop dowels are provided in the inner sides of the frames so that such holes and the mechanical connecting members cannot be seen from the outside with evident aesthetic advantages.
  • caps 13 for covering and protecting the holes for the stop dowels are provided.
  • the described method may be applied to any type of indoor and outdoor frame, doors, windows, shutters etc.
  • the present invention is described and illustrated according to some preferred embodiments, however, it should be understood that anyone skilled in the art can make modifications and/or replacements without departing from the scope of the present industrial invention.
