Definitions
- the present invention relates to a magnetotherapy unit.
- magnetotherapy which is based- on applying a variable magnetic field to the body, is performed using equipment comprising a variable magnetic field source including a coil supplied with a variable current.
- a further advantage of magnetotherapy is the availability of portable units not requiring the assistance of qualified personnel or a surgical environment, and which may therefore be used at home as convenient and as required by the patient, with no traveling or waiting time involved.
- a drawback of known magnetotherapy units is that an increase in the magnetic output power required is accompanied by an increase in current to the coil, in the size of the coil and the electric generating and control circuits, in the heat generated by the Joule effect, and in the complexity of the unit as, a whole. Consequently, over and above certain output levels, the component size, associated heating problems and complexity of the unit are such that the unit can no longer be made portable, and is considerably more expensive, thus limiting the application scope of the therapy.
- a magnetotherapy unit characterized by comprising permanent magnet means for generating a constant magnetic field; and actuating means for moving said permanent magnet means and so generating a variable magnetic field.
- a constant magnetic field source which is so moved as to obtain a variable field at each point of the surrounding space.
- Figure 1 shows a cross section of a first embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 2 shows an underside view of a detail in Figure 2;
- Figure 3 shows a cross section of a second embodiment of the present invention
- Figure 4 shows an underside view of a detail in Figure 3;
- Figure 5 shows a schematic view in perspective of a third embodiment of the present invention.
- Number 1 in Figure 1 indicates a magnetotherapy unit comprising an outer casing 2 presenting a removable rear cover 3 and closed at the front by a transparent surface (window) 4; casing 2 houses a direct-current electric motor 5 presenting an output shaft 6 fitted to a rotary disk 7; the face 8 of rotary disk 7 facing away from motor 5 is fitted with, e.g. four, equally spaced peripheral permanent magnets 10, as shown in Figure 2; and a switch 11 is provided along the path of electric contacts and wires 12 connecting motor 5 to a supply source (battery) 13.
- a direct-current electric motor 5 presenting an output shaft 6 fitted to a rotary disk 7
- the face 8 of rotary disk 7 facing away from motor 5 is fitted with, e.g. four, equally spaced peripheral permanent magnets 10, as shown in Figure 2
- a switch 11 is provided along the path of electric contacts and wires 12 connecting motor 5 to a supply source (battery) 13.
- Unit 1 may also be equipped with control electronics (not shown), e.g. for varying the speed of motor 5 and the frequency of the magnetic field generated.
- the magnetotherapy un i t 1 5 in Fi gur e 3 also presents control electronics 16 and a radiating antenna 17 for generating a high-frequency variable electromagnetic field.
- Radiating antenna 17 comprises a disk, on one face of which is formed a spiral conducting path 19 ( Figure 4 detail) connected to control electronics 16 by wires 20. Alternatively, the spiral conducting path may be provided on both faces of disk 18. Radiating antenna 17 therefore generates a variable electromagnetic field in the adjacent space, so that the benefits of low-frequency magnotothorapy may be combined with thooc of high-frequency electromagnetotherapy for curing other pathologies.
- Figure 5 shows a further embodiment of the present invention, wherein the permanent magnets are moved linearly as opposed to being rotated.
- the unit, indicated by 25 comprises a belt 26, the surface of which is fitted with permanent magnets 27; and belt 26 is rotated about two pulleys 28, one of which is driven by an electric motor 30 in turn supplied by a supply source (battery) 31.
- the whole is housed inside a casing 32 which may be opened, and which is shown only schematically in Figure 5; and, in this case also, an on/off switch (not shown) is provided, and provision may also be made for control electronics.
- the magnetotherapy unit according to the invention presents the following advantages. Firstly, by virtue of the variable magnetic field being generated by moving the permanent magnets, and by virtue of the email size and weight of the disk-magnet assembly, the power supply required is reduced, and the electric power supplied to the motor at the input is therefore not correlated to the magnetic power at the output, which may therefore be increased as required by appropriately sizing the permanent magnets. Secondly, though straightforward in design and cheap to produce, the unit according to the invention is capable of supplying considerable magnetic power, up to 10,000 Gauss/cm, to meet various requirements. And lastly, it is highly compact, may be carried easily in a pocket or handbag, is easy to handle, and extremely versatile.
- the permanent magnets may be rotated or translated in any manner.
- the magnets may be fitted to a reciprocating slide.
- the number of permanent magnets used may vary as required, to vary total power and/or the frequency of the magnetic field generated.
- the unit may be combined with other functions in addition to electromagnetotherapy as described with reference to Figures 3 and 4.
