  • the central area is preferably in the shape of a racetrack, and may include texture which may take the form of raised hemispheres covering the whole of the central region. These protuberances strengthen the structure, as well as increasing the overall surface area to allow fluids to dry quickly, creating channels to distribute fluids, and increasing air circulation.
  • the structure is essentially hollow and represents a hygienic unit that may be washed on both sides.
  • the central region is flat (apart from the protuberances mentioned above) , but for infant use, the central region may be contoured to include features analogous to the form of the human mother, as well as providing a slight head upright sleeping position.
  • the base may be specially moulded or modified to incorporate monitoring devices.
  • the support structure could be used on its own or with a blanket laid over it, neither of these are recommended and the invention therefore further provides for a specially designed cover or mat which can be loosely laid over the structure, or preferably releasably secured to it using "Velcro" or clips.
  • the mat itself may be used alone, on the floor or on a conventional bed base or mattress.
  • a mat comprising a first surface including an array of small protuberances and a substantially flat second surface, the mat being perforated over at least a major part of its area.
  • the perforation holes are located over the entire area of the mat, between the protuberances, providing easy air passage through the mat.
  • the protuberances preferably take the form of hemispherical bubbles.
  • the preferred material for the mat is soft PVC, the protuberances being heat welded into the material.
  • the mat may be covered with linen or any other desired woven or non-woven material, and includes means for releasably securing the cover to an underlying structure.
  • the protuberances hereinafter referred to as “bubbles”, may be filled with air or any other substance required for medical purposes or enhanced function.

  • the mat may further be printed with visual indicators, for positioning an infant in a safe sleeping position. This idea may be taken further by incorporating into the mat areas of most and least comfort for an infant, thereby encouraging the desired safe sleeping position.

  • the mat may also include an "end of useful life” indicator, to show that replacement is necessary.

  • Non- porous and non-cellular materials are preferred, as these reduce nay cavities which may trap any growth medium for bacteria, fungi and any other form of infestation, eg. mites.
  • an assembly for use as a sleeping system for the sleeping human form comprises a support structure having a substantially horizontal sleeping area at least part of the edges of which are folded under to support the sleeping area from beneath, and mat laid upon the support structure and comprising a first surface including an array of generally hemispherical protuberances and a substantially flat second surface, the mat being perforated over at least a major part of its area.
  • the aforementioned first surface including the protuberances forms, in use, the upper surface upon which the person lies, the first surface could equally form the lower surface which, in use, lies against the support structure.

  • a support structure 10 according to one aspect of the present invention comprises ⁇ flat rectangular sheet of rigid PVC which is vacuum formed, trimmed and folded to form a horizontal sleeping area, designated generally by 12, with side portions 13 on each of the two long sides. These side portions 13 are folded into mirror image "S" folds, which together provide shock absorbing, sprung support for the sleeping area 12.
  • the central area 12a of the structure includes small uniform bubbles 11 of generally hemispherical shape, which serve the various functions mentioned earlier in the specification, as well as being a safety feature in the event that a regular blanket is used instead of the recommended mat, the bubble shaped rises helping to maintain air circulation.
  • These bubbles cover the whole of the central area 12a, which in the illustrated embodiment is in the shape of a racetrack, although other shapes are possible, as are other shapes for the structure 10 itself.
  • the overall size of the structure 10 is chosen to suit the particular intended user, being either an infant, a child or an adult.
  • a mat 15 in accordance with a further aspect of the invention is illustrated in Figures 2,3 and 4, and comprises either a single material of a range of materials laminated together to form a cover, particularly, though not exclusively, for laying over the structure 10 illustrated in Figure 1.
  • the mat 15 is vacuum formed from soft PVC to provide on one surface an array of hemispherical bubbles 16 set apart from each other, with a perforation holes 17 between the bubbles which allows for free passage of air and fluids.
  • These bubbles may be filled with air, or other substances such as sterilising compounds and/or pharmaceuticals or other therapeutic substances, the latter application providing what is essentially a trans-cutaneous drug delivery system, in which case the bubbles themselves would include mechanis (s) to allow the substances to pass through onto the surface of the patient's body.
  • the bubbles themselves could be made in other shapes, if required.
  • the bubbles are formed from a single sheet, forming part of a laminated mat 15. If required, the mat may be covered with woven or non woven fabric, which may be decorative an/or printed with useful visual indicators as to the correct sleeping position.
  • Figure 5 illustrated the preferred embodiment, which is in accordance with another aspect of the present invention, in which the mat of Figures 2, 3 and 4 is secured by "Velcro", clips or other means to the structure 10 of Figure 1, to provide a complete assembly comprising base and mat.
  • the base structure 10 is an analogue of the sprung rib cage of the mother and the mat 15 is an analogue of skin and soft tissue.
  • the central region 12a is slightly sloped upwards towards the head end of the structure, offering the baby a slight head upright sleeping position.
  • the bubbles 16 and perforations 17 in the mat 15 further enhance the features of the base structure 10, to provide an ideal sleeping surface for an infant.
  • the mat 15 may also be utilised separately as a changing mat or temporary sleeping surface.

Abstract

L'invention concerne une structure de support (10) conçue pour un corps humain en position allongée et comprenant une zone de couchage sensiblement horizontale (12), dont au moins une partie des bords (13) est repliée, de manière à supporter ladite zone par sa partie inférieure. Un matelas (15) est conçu pour se fixer de façon amovible à ladite structure et comprend une première surface portant un ensemble de petites protubérances (16), ainsi qu'une deuxième surface pratiquement plate, la majeure partie au moins de la surface dudit matelas étant percée de trous (17).
