  • Three types of apnea are to be distinguished: apneas of central origin, apneas by obstruction of the respiratory tract, and so-called mixed apneas associating the two central and obstructive causes.
  • Sleep apnea syndromes are conventionally defined by an apnea index greater than 5 apneas per hour of sleep. More recently, syndromes are defined by an apnea and hypopnea index greater than 10 events per hour of sleep.
  • Oxyhemoglobin saturation was measured by transcutaneous oximetry measurement. Finally, the other gas parameters were measured using an automatic Corning gas analyzer. Clinical signs such as daytime sleepiness and quality of nighttime sleep were assessed using the clinical assessment scale and sleep diary completed by the patient and the clinical investigator. Modafinil was administered during the day, preferably in the morning and early afternoon. Unexpectedly, the results report an effect on the number of night apneas occurring during sleep and hypopnea. This number decreases significantly in 4 subjects out of 6 after 1 month of treatment, and in one subject out of 6 the apneas disappear completely from the records after treatment. The improvement in the number of apneas occurring during sleep seems to persist several days after the interruption of treatment. The doses of modafi ⁇ nil administered per day were 200 mg to 600 mg. As an example, the results obtained in a patient are presented in Table I comparing the results relating to apneas before and during treatment with modafinil.
