Definitions
- the present invention relates to a rolling mill, such as a hot-rolling milling having at least two pairs of rolls.
- the accompanying Figure 1 shows conventional hot rolling using at least one pair of rolls (1,2).
- the rolled metal may be steel, copper, aluminium, etc. and rolling is performed in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- the rolled metal which in the present case is hot, heats the rolls during the rolling procedure along sector 4. Since the rolls are otherwise cooler, and are also generally cooled at their free surfaces, considerable temperature differences occur in the rolls which may lead to deformation, cracks, etc. during cooling, for instance.
- a high rolling speed (e.g. 2 m/s) is therefore aimed at during hot rolling, in order to avoid unnecessary heating.
- a certain amount of heating also occurs during cold rolling and similar problems may occur.
- Hot rolling is often desired directly following a continuous casting machine, e.g. as described in Swedish patent application No. 8903962-2, but it is difficult in this case to maintain high rolling speeds.
- the speed must be reduced to that for cold rolling (e.g. 2 m/min) which with conventional hot rolling results in the drawbacks mentioned above.
- the invention aims at a solution of these and other associated drawbacks and is characterized in that a continuous belt is placed around the upper and lower rolls, respectively, in the two or more pairs of rolls, the belts passing between rolls and rolled metal, the tension of said belts being adjustable and the belts being in contact with the rolled metal, said belt tension being adjustable by means of tension rolls, for instance, located in or beside the path of the belt.
- the belts thus absorb heat primarily from the hot rolled metal and not to any great extent from the rolls, and the above-mentioned drawbacks in conventional rolling are thus avoided.
- Figure 1 shows the state of the art (see above).
- Figure 2 shows a hot-rolling mill having two pairs of rolls with a continuous belt 5 placed around each of the upper rolls (8,6).
- the belt is tensioned by means of a suitable tension means, e.g. the tension rolls 9,9' shown in Figure 2.
- the belts 5 for the upper rolls and 5' for the lower rolls are capable of absorbing tensile and compressive forces arising due to temperature differences and are not normally damaged. They are also easy to replace. Furthermore, the tension can easily be adjusted via the tension rolls 9,9'.
