Definitions

  • This invention relates to games apparatus, and in particular to games apparatus from which a player receives tokens when a win situation is achieved.
  • Tokens won on a particular apparatus in one place are useable or exchangeable elsewhere, and can be used to win further tokens or obtain goods other than from the operator (or owner) on which the tokens were won, this operator being the person who should carry the loss, if any, constituted by the original win. Also, tokens won on a low stake apparatus can be used to win on a high cost machine which would generally offer better winnings.
  • Tokens having, for example, identifying slots suffer from th advantage that they are not easily inserted into their mechanis m r and of the relatively low number of identifying codes that. ar available.
  • apparatus for use in playing a game and which is activated fo play by acceptance of a token, and is arranged to dispense one o more coins or provide a token in the event of a win
  • th apparatus being arranged to accept and dispense tokens of predetermined type only characterised in that the apparatu comprises a slot to receive the token, the token having a cod thereon which may be read by means of a laser beam, the apparatu including means arranged to generate a laser beam and to direc that beam onto the token, read means arranged to read the bea reflected from the token and processing means connected to th read means and operative to compare the read code with predetermined code and to cause the token to be accepted into the machine if the two codes coincide, or reject the token if the two codes do not coincide.
  • a token for use in games apparatus characterised in that the token carries a machine readable code, which may be read by means of a laser.
  • the token is in the form of a disc, of similar size to a coin, and may have a similar appearance to that of a small "compact-disc", available for the digital storage of music.
  • the token is in the form of a planar, rectangular member.
  • Figure 1 is a plan view of a token for use in apparatus embodying the invention
  • Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1 ;
  • Figure 3 is a perspective view of a token identification handling mechanism of games apparatus embodying the invention;
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of another token identification and handling mechanism embodying the invention.
  • Figure 5 is a perspective view of yet another token handling mechanism, for a planar rectangular token.
  • a token 2 is illustrated in Figure 1. It is in the form of a small disc of the size of a coin.
  • the token comprises a base 7 formed of a metallic substance and coated wit clear plastics 8, and having a hole 6 in the middle.
  • the token 2 has an identifying code 5 formed by a pattern of shallow pits t provide reflective and non-reflective areas. This pattern is repeated many times around the perimeter of the disc. As show in Figure 1, the relative size of the pattern 5 is purel schematic, the actual patterns would be much smaller.
  • Th reflective and non-reflective areas constitute a digitally store binary code. For example, a reflective pit could constitute digital 1, a non-reflective area, a digital 0.
  • the code 5 is read by means of a source of laser light 9.
  • the laser shines light onto the token and according to whether th light shines upon a reflective or non-reflective pit, the ligh is reflected back to be received by some suitable device such as a light sensitive diode 10 or the like.
  • a digital code having a plurality of binary digits can be reproduced.
  • This code can then be sent to a central processing unit (not shown and of known type) of the apparatus, to be compared with a predetermined code, and if the codes match, then the token can be accepted by the apparatus.
  • one embodiment of the token handling mechanism comprises an entrance slot 1 to be located on the casing of a games apparatus (not shown).
  • a ' guide 3 having sides 4 extends downwardly into a token store (not shown) and a laser light outlet 9 and light sensitive diode 10 are located adjacent the guide 3.
  • a reject trap door and hole 11 are located in the guide 3, such that upon receipt of an unacceptable token, the trap door 11 opens, the token drops through the hole and is returned to the user.
  • the token 2 In use, the token 2 is inserted into the entry slot 1. It then rolls down the guide 3 and past the laser light outlet 9. The laser light is shone onto the code 5 around the perimeter of the token and is reflected back to the light sensitive diode 10. In this way the code 5 stored on the token can be read by the apparatus. In another embodiment the code could be present on the rim of the disc.
  • the code 5 is then compared by the central processing unit to a predetermined code held by the apparatus. If these codes coincide, and the token is acceptable, then the token continues along the guide to a token store, and the apparatus is activated for play, in known manner. If the token is identified as being not acceptable, then the trap door 11 is opened, e.g by means of a solenoid or the like, and the token is returned to the player.
  • FIG 4 illustrates a different embodiment of the token handling mechanism.
  • a token 2 is inserted into the entry slot 1 , and travels down a guide 3 having sides 4.
  • the guide 3 has a curved end portion 12 where the token stops.
  • the token is then gripped by means of a clasp mechanism 13.
  • the clasp mechanism 13 comprises an elongate plate or arm 14, which is arranged to tilt or pivot through an angle transverse to the plane of the token 2 by means of a motor or the like (not shown).
  • a drive cog 16 is then inserted into the hole 6 of the token, and the clasp fingers 15 are moved out of the way by means of a further motor (not shown).
  • the drive cog 16 then rotates to spin the token 2.
  • a laser outlet 9 and a light sensitive diode 10 are also mounted on the elongate plate 14 and these read the digital code 5, in similar manner as that previously described. If the token is identified as being acceptable, the clasps 15 release the token 2 which drops into a token store 17 or chute. If the token is unacceptable the plate is tilted over a reject outlet or chute 18 and the token 2 is dropped into that outlet 18, from where it is returned to the player.
  • the token is in the form of a planar rectangular card 19 having codes 5 as shown on both sides thereof.
  • the code 5 is in the form of a stripe extending along the longitudinal centre line of the card.
  • Pinch rollers 20 driven by motors (not shown) are present within the apparatus adjacent the entrance slot 1 to pass the card 19 over a laser outlet 9 and light sensitive diode.
  • the token is inserted into the entry slot 1 , and moved over the laser outlet 9 and diode 10, so that the code may be read. This code is then compared to that held within the internal memory of the games apparatus. If the token is identified as being acceptable, then the pinch wheels 20 continue to move it into the apparatus to be received into a token store. If the token is identified as being unacceptable, then the pinch wheels 20 rotate in the opposite direction to eject the token 19 back out of the entry slot 1 , where it may be collected by the user.
  • the token store may comprise a stack of such tokens onto the tope of which the accepted token is placed. Tokens may be dispensed from the bottom of the stack.
  • a token, in the form of a card or a coin shaped token having such a laser readable code is difficult to forge and a huge variety of codes may be written thereon, so the risks of fraud are much reduced.
