Definitions

  • the invention relates to basins for the rearing of aquatic organisms, as indicated in the introduction to Claim of Patent 1.
  • the invention is specially designed to create water flow in basins/tanks with restricted water depth in relation to the width of the basin (D/W ⁇ 1).
  • the basin can be used as a sedimentation basin for water treatment/cleansing and for the rearing of aquatic organisms, particularly fish (flatfish that require shallow water are ideal).
  • Water flow created by air diffusers to separate particles are known, from the cleansing of waste water (aerated sand traps).
  • the water and particles in suspension flow into one short side of the basin.
  • the particles are sedimented and are deposited on the bottom, while the water is removed by overflow drains at the other short side.
  • the deposited particles on the bottom are then led to a sludge pocket by a mechanical traverser or chain scraper.
  • the main purpose of the invention is to establish stable flow conditions in a basin/tank with shallow water in relation to its width (D/W ⁇ 1). This can be done by a device as stated in the characterizing part of Claim of Patent 1.
  • the flow along the bottom is stable and adequate enough to transport particles without requiring mechanical scrapers or suction equipment.
  • the most efficient means to get water to flow in a wide shallow basin using air diffusers is a flow guide. The particles are collected in concentrated form in a particle trap and are removed from the basin by emptying the particle trap.
  • the arrangement for generating flow and the particle trap are integrated in a single unit.
  • the geometric design of this provides optimal operating conditions for flow generation and particle sedimentation.
  • the invention makes it possible to create flow in rectangular, shallow basins/tanks. It incorporates bottom self cleaning at the same time as the particle contamination is removed as concentrated effluence prior to subsequent treatment, if necessary.
  • the air stream from the diffusers also enables oxygen.to be supplied and provides water aeration.
  • Fig. 1 shows the general flow situation in a basin/tank with the arrangement for flow generation.
  • Fig. 2 shows the arrangement for flow generation and the particle trap in detail
  • Fig. 3 presents a horizontal section through the basin/tank showing the flow generator arrangement and the particle trap.
  • Part of a rearing unit is shown which consists of a rectangular, box-shaped tank or container 10, which ha& considerably greater length (height direction in Fig. 3) than width (lateral direction in Fig. 1), and considerably greater width than depth.
  • This tank 10 is designed for circulation in the lateral direction as illustrated by arrows 11 in the water volume 12 in Fig. 1.
  • a vertical wall 14 is positioned by suitable means along one of the longitudinal walls 13 in the tank 10, so as to form a continuous opening 15 along the wall 13.
  • a longitudinal outlet area 16 from a tubular air diffuser 17.
  • the outlet area 16 can be in porous plastic or bar_shaped ceramic material.
  • the diffuser 17 in the example is fitted under the sheeting material 18 which forms part of the double bottom of the tank 10 and which is connected to the bottom of the tank at an inclined angle 19.
  • An alternative design is to freely locate the diffuser 17 above the double bottom 18 or integrate the diffuser 17 into the base of the tank 10. Whatever solution is adopted, the airstream out of the outlet area 16 will cause the water to flow up through the opening 15 thus creating water circulation in the tank.
  • this wing 20 On the upper edge of the vertical wall 14 there is a laterally protruding wing 20 that faces away from the adjoining wall of the tank. In the design advocated here this wing 20 is abo ⁇ t 6 cm under the undisturbed surface of the water in the tank. This design provides the most satisfactory water circulation.
  • the drain 23 is formed by a pipe with longitudinal upward_facing opening 24. This is connected by several lateral outlet pipes 25 to an outlet pipe 26. The purpose of the drain 23 is to form a particle trap to collect concentrated effluence from the tank 10. This particle matter can be emptied or removed from the outlet pipe 26 by suction for appropriate treatment.
  • An air supply pipe 27 is located longitudinally in the diffuser 17.
  • the supply pipe 27 is connected to an external source of air, such as a compressor, and has a number of holes 28 underneath.
  • the air supply pipe thus acts as an air diffuser in the diffuser 17 and ensures that the diffuser 17 is free of water when the unit starts up.
  • the flow and circulation system which has been described provides stable bottom flow towards the drain 23, which is sufficient to transport particles along the bottom into the drain or particle trap 23.
  • the flow into the inlet opening 22 creates water rotation along the longitudinal axis of the drain 23. This rotation means that the particles are easily transported along the drain 23 to the nearest outlet 25.
  • the drain 23 can also be located in the bottom of the tank 10. If an inclined angle 19 and double bottom 18 are used, external elements are avoided which could complicate both transport and assembly.
