  • the locking units as later described, are centrally, remotely actuable and operate entirely independently of the standard vehicle locking systems, which systems typically involve the use of a key operable lock, the key entry point being located on at least the front doors of the vehicle.
  • the actuation unit comprises a ⁇ ouble acting solenoid arrangement comprising solenoid coils 4 and 5 acting in a push, pull arrangement upon slug 2.
  • Coil 5 when energised attracts the slug 2 within the casing 6.
  • Coil 4 when energised attracts the slug 2 away from the casing 6 such that a rod or bar portion of the slug protrudes from the casing 6 and can be arranged to engage in receiving member 3, as shown.
  • a spring loaded, indent arrangement comprising depressions 8, 9, 10, 11 in slug 2 into which are receivable spring loaded engagement pawls 12, 13 is used to hold the slug 2 in either the withdrawn or extended position once either of those positions has been reached by the slug 2.
  • This indent arrangement prevents the slug from being moved from-its withdrawn or extended position due to vibration and movement of the vehicle in which the locking unit is mounted.
  • This indent system helps to retain the slug in the last position to which the coils 4, 5 have moved the slug, even after power is removed from the coils 4, 5.
  • Figure 2 shows a control circuit arrangement which derives power from the vehicle electrical system as shown and, via key switch 14 activates either of coils 4 or 5 in order to extend or withdraw respectively the slug 2 from or into the housing 6.
  • figures 3, 4 and 5 show perspective views and further detail of the locking unit of Figure 2.
  • Figure 3 shows the unit with the slug in the withdrawn position whilst Figure 4 shows the unit with the slug 2 in the extended position and engaging receiving means 3.

  • Figure 8 shows ' a circuit diagram for a centrally controlling locking system wherein locking units, as previously described, are installed at all entry points on a vehicle 30, 31 ' , 32, 33, ' 34, 35 and wired back to an electronic control unit 36, which unit is operable by a separate, single key switch or remote transmitter arrangement 37.
  • the control unit derives primary power from the main vehicle battery 38.
  • the control unit 36 in addition to controlling the remote actuators 30-35 also operates an ignition isolation unit 39.
  • the ignition isolation unit 39 when activated, will open circuit at least part of the ignition circuit of the vehicle and short to the body or ground at least a portion of the ignition circuit.
  • FIG. 9 A block diagram of the internal functions of the electronic control unit 36 is shown in Figure 9. Provision is made in the circuit of Figure 9 for sensors to be connected to the electronic control unit so that the unit can function as an alarm unit in addition to performing its function as a central locking control unit. Provision is also made in the circuit of Figure 9 for a battery back up unit which allows the control unit to derive power from an independent source not reliant upon the vehicle battery.
  • Figure 10 shows a simplified wiring diagram of an alternative circuit for control of the locking units 30-35.
  • the actuation units of the present invention are installed in at least the vehicle cabin entry points, namely the front and rear passenger doors (and hatch if applicable). Preferably this is accomplished ' by installing the actuation units in the more solid parts of the body door frames surrounding the passenger doors.
  • Receiving units 3 are installed on the vehicle doors, positioned to receive the slugs or locking bars 2 from the actuation units 1. Additionally actuation and receiving units can be installed on other vehicle entry points such as the boot and bonnet in similar fashion to that described for the vehicle cabin doors.
  • the actuation units 30-35 are connected by concealed wiring to the electronic control unit 36.
  • an authorised user of the vehicle desires to secure the vehicle against theft the user firstly closes all vehicle doors then activates the central control unit 36 by means of remote transmitter or key switch 37 from the exterior of the vehicle.
  • the central control unit 36 then actuates the actuation units 30-35 such that locking bolts 2 enter receiving units 3 on all vehicle entry points to which the locking units 1 are fitted.
  • the control unit 36 achieves this end by sending a control signal of limited duration having sufficient energy to cause the locking bars 2 to-be extended to engagement position. After this actuation energy is removed and the locking bars 2 are retained in position by means of the indent mechanism previously described or equivalent. In this way the entry points on the vehicle are rendered independently locked.
  • the locking system of the present invention provides a highly effective means of preventing or at least making very difficult the unauthorised entry to a vehicle.
  • the control unit 36 can also render the ignition switch inoperative by means such as open circuiting and grounding of the ignition circuit.
  • FIG. 11 and 12 there is shown a third embodiment of the invention which follows in both mechanical and electrical concept the first and second embodiments.
  • This third embodiment addresses itself to a safety aspect.
  • the earlier embodiments described a relatively secure locking system which could be construed as dangerous if allowed to operate whilst the vehicle is still occupied.
  • a modification to the control system is proposed which, on the one hand, attempts to prevent this scenario and, on the other hand, is adapted to also add an additional alarm feature.
  • control unit interprets receipt of movement information from the detecter 40 as an unauthorised intrusion into the vehicle and activates the alarm system in similar fashion to that previously described in the first and second embodiments.
  • the internal central control for the independent locking system incorporates a permissive code arrangement whereby a permissive code must be entered before the electronic control unit will either activate or deactivate the independent locking system.
  • deterrent means can be used in combination with the locking system of the present invention in order to enhance its utility and effectiveness.

Abstract

Système de sécurité amélioré empêchant d'entrer dans un véhicule automobile ou analogue, comprenant un moyen de verrouillage pouvant être commandé à distance (30, 31, 32, 33, 34), monté sur chaque porte du véhicule et construit de sorte qu'il faille virtuellement détruire la porte afin de pénétrer dans le véhicule lorsque le système fonctionne. Dans un mode de réalisation spécifique, des verrous à déplacement longitudinal axial se déplacent entre la carrosserie et une surface de bordure de la porte fermée ou vice versa, afin de protéger la porte. Dans un mode de réalisation de protection accrue, un dispositif de détection de mouvement est prévu afin de détecter le mouvement d'individus ou d'animaux à l'intérieur de la voiture, afin d'empêcher le déclenchement du système, lorsqu'une personne ou un animal se trouve à l'intérieur du véhicule. On utilise également le même système afin de provoquer une condition d'alarme si le mouvement d'une personne ou d'un animal est détecté à l'intérieur du véhicule, lorsque le système de verrouillage est opérationnel.
