Definitions

  • the invention concerns a container for transporting waste from a collection point to a waste combustion plant, as well as an installation which is equipped with such a con ⁇ tainer.
  • the invention relates to a system for disposal of dangerous waste from, for example, hospitals, medical centers, rest homes, laboratories and the like.
  • Waste of this kind which for example can be contageous or poisonous, is preferably disposed of by combustion in a waste combustion plant, and in this operation it is a re ⁇ quirement that the waste be transferred directly into the combustion oven without any manual handling.
  • a container for transporting waste from a collection point to a waste combustion plant which has the characteristic features, that the container is sha ped such that it may be lifted with the crane in the dum ⁇ ping hall of the waste combustion plant, that the containe has a self-emptying bottom which may be opened, and that i is equipped for remote-controlled opening and closure of the bottom.
  • Waste transport by means of containers is commonly known. Usually this is the transport of larger amounts of, for example, waste from building, garden refuse or similar loo se material destined for a dumping site or a waste com- bustion plant, as these types of waste arise in rather sig nificant amounts in the order of several cubic meters.
  • the con ⁇ tainer according to the invention may advantageously be formed as recited in claim 2, as thereby there is attained a very simple way of handling the container with the crane of the waste combustion plant while at the same time the container in fact turns out to be rather fit for the volum needs of the individual collection point.
  • the manufacturing costs of the container are reduced signi ficantly by manufacturing it from plastics material, such as provided for in claim 4.
  • the plastic recipient itself can be manufactured by the known production methods such as, for example, rotational- casting, thus avoiding weldin bending and other operational steps which would be requir in manufacturing the recipient from sheet material. It ha up to now not been common to manufacture waste containers which are used for transporting the waste to a waste com ⁇ bustion plant, from plastics material.
  • a further advantageous adaptation of the shape of the con- tainer according to the invention for its purpose is provi ded in claim 5.
  • an installation for transporting waste from a collection poin to a waste combustion plant by means of a container which is characterized in that the container is shaped in any of the ways mentioned above, and that the installation additionally comprises a motor drive arranged on the con ⁇ tainer for opening and closing the bottom of the container a remote control receiver adapted for connection to the mo tor drive for remote control thereof, and a remote control transmitter which is adapted for transmitting remote con ⁇ trol signals to the remote control receiver in such a way that opening and closing of the bottom on the container ca be controlled by operating the remote control transmitter when the container is lifted by the crane.
  • the embodiment of the installation according to claim 8 en compasses the additional advantage that the recharging of the accumulator in the remote control receiver meshes natu rallly with the working cycle of the overall system.
  • Fig. 1 shows a container according to the invention i a side view
  • Fig. 2 shows the same container turned 90 around the vertical axis of symmetry
  • Fig. 3 illustrates the shape of the container
  • Fig. 4 serves to illustrate the construction of the bottom closure on the container
  • Fig. 5 serves to illustrate the installation for transporting waste as a whole.
  • the container i closed at the top 4 and provided with a door 5, which may be opened and through which waste may be thrown into the container, as well as with a venting hole 6 for neutrali ⁇ zing pressure differences due to heating or cooling, the venting hole at the same time providing an opportunity for throwing in smaller waste specimens.
  • the door 5 is hinged in two hinges 7 and provided with a closing knob 8.
  • the door 5 could furthermore be equipped with a lock.
  • the lower part of the container is narrowed to form a self emptying bottom which is closed with a bottom lid.
  • the de ⁇ tails fo the bottom closure appear more closely in fig. 4.
  • the container is provided with an actuator arrangement 9.
  • the latter compri- ses a spindle 10 which is coupled to the frame 2 by means of a pivotal link 11 and to the bottom lid by means of a pivotal link 12, respectively, and which - in a known way - may be extended and retracted by screwing it into or out of a sleeve by means of a spindle motor 13 which is connected to the spindle 10 via a gear box 14.
  • the contai ⁇ ner is dimensioned such that the grab on the kind of crane which is commonly used in the dumping halls of the Danish waste combustion plants today, may grasp down around the • container from above whereby the extreme ends of the grab arms will rest against the outside and partly the underside of the collar 15 on the container.
  • the container 1 consists of a rotatio nally- olded, cross-linked polyethylene material with a wall thickness of about 1.5 cm.
  • the container can be lifted with the gra on the waste crane and be moved to a position above the slide which leads from the waste silo in the dumping hall of the waste combustion plant into the combustion oven it ⁇ self. Only when the container is situated above this slide to the combustion oven the bottom lid is opened by means o the actuator arrangement 9, such that the waste in the con tainer falls directly into the slide and does not first come into contact with the waste stored in the dumping hall.
  • Fig. 2 shows the same container turned 90° around the ver ⁇ tical axis of symmetry.
  • the recipient 1 is mounted on the frame 2 by means of supporting feet 16 and support plates 17, and the actuator arrangement 9 is likewise mounted on the recipient 1 by means of support plates 18 and 27.
  • Fig. 3 is a top view for illustrating the hexagonal shape of the container.
  • the crane grabs as used today in the Da ⁇ nish waste combustion plants usually have six arms, and through the hexagonal shape of the recipient there is at ⁇ tained an optimization of volume, as the container may fit very precisely into the grab, the multi-faceted shape like wise giving the recipient a higher strength.
  • two handles 19 which one may grasp when the container is to be moved around on the wheels 3.
  • Fig. 4 serves to illustrate the bottom closure of the con- tainer.
  • the recipient 1 which is molded from plastics by rotational molding, has a conically extended bottom flange 20 which is clasped in the frame 2 by means of clasping pieces 21, 22.
  • the bottom opening of the container is closed with a bottom lid 23, and between the container flange 20 and the bottom lid 23 there is arranged a seal o rubber or a suitable similar material.
  • This seal can, wher the process of rotational molding leads to too large dimen sional tolerances, also be realized by first molding on an equalizing layer (not shown) , for example of polyurethane, on the flange 20 until a previously fixed dimension is at ⁇ tained in the opening, whereafter the bottom lid is sealed against this equalizing layer, or by molding such an equa ⁇ lizing layer onto the bottom lid.
  • an equalizing layer for example of polyurethane
  • the bottom lid 23 is mounted on a lever 24 which- is pivo- tably journaled in relation to the frame 2 in two bearings 25 (se fig. 2).
  • the spindle 10 in the actuator arrangement 9 is coupled to the lever 24 in the bearing 12, and the spindle itself is pivotably suspended in relation to the frame 2 and the recipient 1 in the bearing 11 which rests on the support plate 27.
  • the bottom lid 23 is opened by operating the motor 13 in a first direction of rotation such that the movable part 26 of the spindle is pushed out of the spindle housing 10, the lever 24 swinging down around the bearing 25.
  • the bottom lid 23 is closed by operating the motor in the opposite di ⁇ rection.
  • the spindle arrangement 0 swings slightly back and forth around the bearing 11 which is easily seen from the arrangement of the bearing points shown in the drawing.
  • the container according to the invention is seen prepared to be taken up by the crane of a waste combustion plant.
  • On the actuator unit 9 there is ounte a remote con- trol receiver 30 which can receive signals from a remote control transmitter 31.
  • the remote control receiver 30 in ⁇ cludes an accumulator pack for supplying the actuator unit 9 with the current required.
  • the remote control transmitter 31 is provided with two function keys 32 and 33 for initia- ting the opening and the closure, respectively, of the bot ⁇ tom lid.
  • Containers according to the invention can thus be placed at the various waste collection sites in a larger number, from where they can be collected with a vehicle and be transpor ⁇ ted to the waste combustion plant and prepared for emptying by mounting the remote control receiver.
  • the remote control receiver can advantageously be constructed in such a way that it can be carried along during the shuttling of the containers, the built-in accumulator pack being coupled to a charger unit provided on the transpor- ting vehicle thereby such that the accumulator charging fits naturally into the overall work schedule of the waste system.
  • the construction of the container with such dimensions that it may be held in the grab of th crane in a waste combustion plant is particularly advanta ⁇ geous as one avoids having to provide the containers with special suspending means. It is imaginable, however, to provide the container with a suitably shaped holding means at the top, such that the crane grab can grasp around this holding means and lift the container this way.
  • the holding means could for example be a suitably shaped eyelet or a knob.
  • the container could also be lifted by means of straps which are fastened or become fastened on the frame 2 or on suitably shaped holding means on the re ⁇ cipient 1.
