(Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) This application is made under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended by the act of April 30, 1928, and the invention herein described and claimed, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America, for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
One form or" the invention is illustrated in the accompanyingschematic drawing in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a representative bucket and its dumping mechanism; and Figure 2 i a front elevation of the valve controlling the dumping mechanism.
The bucket I, (see Fig. 1), is designed to be supported by a ring 2 attached to a beam 3 to which is fastened rods 4 passing through guides 5 and through packing glands 6 and so into cylinders l and terminating at their lower ends in pistons 8 equipped with check-valves 9.
The upper and lower ends of cylinders l are equipped with pipe systems in and l I respectively which communicate with a suitable valve 12 operated by lever I3.
From valve i2 emerge two pipes, I4 and l5, communicating through flexible connections to the upper and lower ends respectively of a pivotally mounted cylinder It which is equipped with a piston 51 to which is attached a rod l8 passing through packing gland l9 and connecting with a hinged trap 29 in the bottom of the bucket l by means of a linkage 2!.
The entire system of cylinders, pipes, and valve is to be filled completely with a suitable hydraulic medium; oil in the present instance.
in action:
The normal position of lever [B of valve [2 is axis AA, (see Fig. 2) to which it is always returned by spring action, and in which position the hydraulic system is locked.
The bucket i, (see Fig. l), is lifted by ring 2, and the entire weight of bucket l and its contents is supported by the oil above pistons 8 and in pipe system iii.
Turning valve lever 13 into position BB (in this instance) permits the oil under pressure above pistons l3 and in pipe system It! to flow through valve i2 and pipe Hi into the upper part of cylinder i6 forcing piston ll into lower part of cylinder 56, thus through rod l8 and link 2| opening the hinged trap 20 through are 22, or a portion or" the arc; and the oil displaced by piston H from the bottom of cylinder l6 passes through pipe 15, valve l2, and through pipe system ii into the lower part of cylinders l replacing that displaced through the vertical movement of pistons 8 in cylinders l; the various displace ments taking placesimultaneously and keeping the hydraulic system complete and unbroken. This portion of the cycle is accompanied by only a partial displacement of the oil above pistons 8, due to the difierenc'e in cubical displacement of cylinders l and-cylinder I6;
Turning lever I3 into position C'---C' (in this instance) permits the oil under pressure above pistons 8 to flow thru pipe system [0, valve l2 and through pipe l5 into the lower part of cylinder l6, thus forcing piston I7 upward and closing trap door 2|) through the action of rod l8 and linkage 2!; the oil displaced above piston l'l passing through pipe 114, valve I2 and through pipe system ll into the lower part of cylinders l replacing that displaced by the vertical movement of pistons 8, thevarious displacements taking place simultaneously.
When the bucket I is placed in position for refilling and a lift is no longer applied to ring 2, the pistons 8 are returned to the bottom of cylinders 1 due to the weight of ring 2, beam 3, and rods 4, this action being made possible due to the opening of automatic check valves 9 in pistons 8; thus the entire cycle is ready for repetition.
The form of the bucket and its trap door form no part of this invention; but
I claim:
1. In a dump bucket having a trap door, hydraulically operatable means for opening and closing said trap door, a cross beam disposed above said bucket, said beam being adapted to be connected to a hoisting device, vertical rods secured to said beam, said rods being slidably engaged with said bucket, pistons secured to the lower ends of said rods, cylinders secured to said bucket, slidably encasing said pistons, a hydraulic fluid in said cylinders, hydraulic conduits leading from the upper and lower ends of said cylinders to said hydraulically operatable means for opening and closing said trap door, valve means associated with said conduits whereby the hydraulic fluid can be made to flow from said cylinders to said hydraulic operatable means to open and to close said trap door when said pistons are actuated upward in said cylinders.
2. In a dump bucket having a trap door, hydraulically operatable means for opening and closing said door, a cross beam disposed above said bucket, said beam being adapted to be connected to a hoisting device, vertical rods secured to said beam, said rods being slidably engaged for vertical movement with said bucket, pistons secured to the lower ends of said rods, cylinders secured to said bucket slidably encasing said pistons, a hydraulic fluid confined in said cylinders, hydraulic conduits leading from the upper and lower ends of said cylinders to said hydraulically operatable means whereby the fluid in said cylinders can be made static and whereby said fluid can be communicated with said hydraulic operatable means to open and to close said trap door when said pistons are actuatedupward in said cylinders, and means for actuating said pistons downward in said cylinders when the fluid in said cylinders is static. I
3. In a dump bucket having a trap door, hydraulically operatable means for opening and closing said door, a cross beam disposed above said bucket, said beam being adapted to be connected to a hoisting device, vertical rods secured to'said beam, said rods being slidably engaged for vertical movement with said bucket,vp istons secured to the lower ends of said rods, cylinders secured tQ-said'bucket slidably encasing said pistons, a hydraulic circuit including said cylinders and said hydraulically operatable means, whereby pressure; can be impressed in said circuit when said bucket is suspended from said beam, a valve for said circuit, said valve being characterized by the fact that when it is inone position, the pressure in the circuit isdirected to said means for opening said door, and when it is in another position the pressure is directed to said means for closing said door.
4. In a dump bucket having a trap door, hydraulically 'operatable means for opening and closing said door, a cross beam disposed above said bucket, said beam being adapted to be connected to a hoisting device, vertical rods secured to said beam, said rods being slidably engaged for Vertical movement with said bucket, pistons secured to the lower ends of said rods, cylinders secured to said bucket slidably encasing said pistons, a hydraulic circuit including said cylinders and said hydraulically operatable means, whereby pressure can be impressed in said circuit when said bucket issuspended from said beam, a valve associated with said circuit, said valve being so arranged with respect to said circuit that when it is in one position the fluid in said cylinders is static, when it is in a second position said fluid is in communication with said hydraulically operatable means to open said door, and when said valve is in a third position said fluid is in communication with said hydraulically operatable means to close said door, said piston having check valves, said check valveshaving the function of opening when said pistons are'actuated downward against the fluid in said cylinders.
