DFIQWING PAGE UFlQ'w-QILQBLE DOCUMENT NUMBER UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
VIRGIL DRAPER, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR CHAIN-LINKS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,140, dated March 14, 1876 application filed March 7, 1876. [Term of Patent years] To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL DRAPER, of North Attleborough, in the county of-Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Design for Chain-Links; and I hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of one side of my newlydesigned chain-link. Fig. 2 is the view of the reverse side of my newly-designed chain-link.
The nature of my design is fully represented in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is made, and consists in an oblong chain-link, a, provided with rounded ends, the central portion being filled with a panel or block, b. On one side of this central panel the word Centennial is stamped, engraved, enameled, or otherwise formed, and on the other side of the same panel two clasped hands, and the letters N and S, on each side of the clasped hands, are formed by stamping, casting, engraving, or enameling. The border is formed of the raised link a, and the block or panel extends to, or nearly to, the rounded end of the link. The whole forms a new and unique design, emblematic of the union of the North and South in the Centennial year.
I am aware that oblong chain-links used for watch or other chains have been before designed, and also that such links have been provided with blocks or panels; but such chain-links were not made with panels extending to, or nearly to, the rounded ends, nor were such panels before ornamented in the manner shown in my present design.
In constructing a chain of these links, I prefer to arrange the same so that the side shown in Fig. l alternates with the design shown in Fig. 2; but I do not consider such an arrangement an essential element in my design.
Having thus fully described my newlydesigned chain-link, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as my invention- The design for a chain-link, in which the link forms a border surrounding a panel, on one side of which is the word Centennial, and on theopposite side are two clasped hands and the letters N and S, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
VIRGIL DRAPER.
