Description

03-: AU 292 EX J. McLOUGH LIN.
Fans.
Patented July 23.1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN MCLOUGHLIN, OF MORRISANIA, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A FAN.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN McLoUenLIN, of Morrisania, county of Wcstchester and State of New York, have invented and originated a certain new, ornamental, and useful Fan, embodying original designs in outline, configuration, and ornamentation; and I do hereby de clare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing furnished and forming a part of the same, is a clear and true description of several fans illustrative of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents one of my fans, the outline or configuration of which corresponds with the general outline of the human head, and with one side of the fan provided with a representation of the features of a human face in front view, and arranged with proper relation to the outlines. Fig.2 represents one of my fans having the outline and configuration of a human head and face in profile, with the half face and features represented in proper relation to the outline. Fig. 3 represents a profile-fan, ar- Fanged to fold in the usual manner of folding ans.
When constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the body of the fan is preferably to bemade of stiff pasteboard, and provided with a riveted split handle, or a flat handle embraced between the rear of the front and a suitable backing of cloth or paper. In some instances both sides of the fan will be provided with representations of the human face, as, for instance, when desired to convey to the masses a general idea of the appearance of rival can. didates to public office, or of candidates for different positions on the same political ticket. When but one side of the fan is embellished with the features the rear side may be devoted to notes pertaining to the personal history of the individual whose face is presented on the front side. When desired, the rear side may represent the rear view of the head helonging to the face on the front. Under certain circumstances two profiles will be properly presented on the same fan, front; or the same may be made with faces in quarter view, and looking toward or from each other.
I am aware that fans have heretofore been made in great variety which have been embellished with illustrations of various kinds, inclusive of portraits of individuals, and I therefore disclaim such mere ornamentation, and confine my invention to the outline or corn figuration of the body of the fan and the corresponding facial representation on the fronts or backs thereof.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A fan having the general outline and configuration of the human head, and provided on one or both sides with a representation of the human facial features, substantially as described.
