Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR A PICTUR'EDFRAME.
Specification forming pnrt of Design No. 5,877, dated May 9B, 1872.
Specification describing a Design for Grecian Picture-Frames, invented by JEFFERSON J. GRAY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk. and State of liassachusetts.
The nature of iny design is fully represent ed by the accompanying photographic illustration, to which reference is made.
A represents the frame proper, and consists of square pieces of Sntlicient length for the size of frame desired. These have a rabbet, into which may be inserted a gilt inner molding in the nsnal manner. The outer frame is Iioined at its corners by being halved or notched together, the ends ciossin g each other and projecting beyond the sides and ends a short distance, in the usual manner. Having thus prepared the frame, I ornament the same by `iigsnwing out ornaments in the form of leaves B, having openings representing stems s cnt through the same. These I glue or nail upon the four corners ofthe frame. Upon the side pieces I affix, in a similar manner, leaves O, havin g similar stems ont through them, as indlcated by the letter t. Upon the top and bottom I aiiix, in similar manner, leaf or scrollshaped pieces D. The frame may be constructed of black Walnut, and the leaves or ornaments of the same; or the leaves and ornaments may be of a 1i ghter-colored Wood than the frame, or Vice versa; but I do not consider this an essential element ofthe design.
The distinctive character of my design is found in the leaves and ornaments, which are of equal thickness in all parts and project from the face ci' a smooth traine equally at all points or edges of the leaves or ornaments, the former being' provided with openings cut through them, as described and shown.
What I claim as my invention is l. A design for a pictn1e-i'ra1nc,in which the corner ornaments are composed of leaves B having openings s, substantially in the inanner above described.
2. The design oi` the ornaments C, having openings t, upon the side pieces of the frame A, substantially in the manner deseribelfl.
rlhc design ot' the ornaments I) upon the top and bottoni ot' the frame, substantially in the manner above described.
4. The design of the picture-fratrie A, with ornaments B O l) haring opcningss and t,
substantially in the manner shown and dc scribed.
