Description

A. ARNLD 8|. H. MEBZ.
, Show-Gases,
N0. 135,505. Patented Feb.4,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST ARNOLD AND HEINRICH MERZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOW-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,505, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, AUGUST ARNOLD and HEINRICH MERZ, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Cases; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our improved show-case, with the bead of the front top molding removed, and the right end top molding and bead removed; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section at .fr x in Fig. l.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of our invention relates to an improved method of construct-ing the frames of show-cases and of securing the glass therein in such a manner that it can readily be removed and replaced without moving the case or taking out its contents. The invention consists in rabbeting the inner edges of the caseframesfor the reception of the glass, which is secured in place by moldings screwed to the frames, the screws being concealed under 'movable beads dowcled to the moldings, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the frame of our show-case, of wood, in the section shown in Fig. 2. Alon g the outer ed ges of the fram eliars are rabbets a, for receiving the edges of the glass plates B, Whose outer surfaces ae llush with the faces of the frame-bars, and are secured in place by screwing a molding, C, to each outer face of the frame-bars. The molding used is a double-beaded ogeef7 with a flat held by dowels o projecting from the plinth.
The beads C may be of a different color from the body of the molding to afford a contrast and give a better effect than if plain moldings were used, While the moldings themselves give the case a highly ornamental finish.
To facilitate the removal of the beads C', under one of them a hole, e, is made through the molding and frame-bar, through which a nail set or punch may be driven up from the inside of the case, and thus unseat the bead, the others being removed by any sharp tool inserted under their ends.
It will be seen that a broken glass may be easily removed and replaced by another plate in very short time Without disturbing the contents of the case and without requiring the services of a glazier, a plate of glass of the required size being all that it is necessary to procure. Y
` lVhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe rabbeted frame-bars A and moldings'C C', constructed and arranged as described and shown, for the purpose set forth.
AUGUST ARNOLD.
HEINRICH MERZ.
