eHow-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,759, dated September 15,' 1903.
Application ledMay 22, 1903. Serial No. 158.285. (No modell) To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THoMAs H.. BETTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Chesterfield and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show-Gases, of which the fol lowing is aspecification.
This invention relates to knockdown showcases, and has for its object to provide an im- The invention consists of` a knockdown show-case and in details thereof,as hereine after set forthand claimed.
rss
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a view in front elevation of a knockdown `show-case constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof, on the line x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view in horizont-al section. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the front and sides folded together. Fig. 5 is a detail view, partly in section, showinga portion of the front, one side and top, and means for se curing theA latter. 'Fig 6 is a detail View on the line y fy, Fig. 5, looking upward from the bottom or base.- Fig. 7 is a detail view ofV a modiiication of the construction for securing the top in place. j
. In carrying out this invention a suitable base 1 is provided, on which is mounted the front 2, the sides A3, hinged tothe front, the back 4, detachably secured to the sides, and' the top 5, detachably secured to the front,
" has one of its sides tapered or cut away, as at `l O, as shown, forming with the grooved column 8 a vertical angular recess 1l for a purpose hereinafter explained.
Each side 3 consists of a sash-frame l2, in which is mounted a glass 13. The sash-frame l `12 is hinged to the projection 14 of the sash-4 is tapered to fit against the adjacent tapering side 10. This construction, together with the angular groove 9, affords a seat or recess for the tapering side of the sash-frame l2 when the latter is in closed position. The rear side of each sash-frame l2 is provided externally with a vertical column 15 and internally with a bead or tongue 16.
The back 4 of the show-case may be of any suitable construction, and, as here shown, con sists of a top horizontal bar 17,A detachably secured to the top 5 by any suitable means, and, as here shown, preferably by short metallic strips or clips I8, fastened to bar 17 by screws 19 and having a projecting end or lip which lies against the edge of the top 5.` The bar 17 and the base l are providedwith beads or ribs 20, which set into slots 21 in slidable glass panels 22, which close the back of the show-case. The end glass panels 22 also have a vertical slot, which engages the bead 16 on the end of the sides 3. The sides 3 are detachably secured to the basel by hooks and eyes 23 or other suitable means.
` The top l, which is of glass, rests on the front, sides, and back and is secured in place, in addition to the clips 18 on the bar 17, by means of similar clips 24, secured by screws 25 to the enlarged `heads of the 'columns 8 and projecting so as to bear against the edge of thetop l. f
' In the modification in Fig.` 7 instead of the top l resting directly on the columns 8 and `the front, sides, and back a four-sided frame or molding 26 rests on the front, sides, and back and has a rabbet 27 on its inner edge, in which rests a glass top 27. The frame 26 is secured by hooks and eyes 28 orlother suitable means to the front, sides, and back.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g t l. A knockdown show-case, consisting of a removable base; a front with end columns; sides hinged to the front, and fitting into said columns, and having at their other end a column on the, outside and a rib or tongue on the inside, a removable back and top, and means for securing the parts together, as herein' set forth.
Q. In a knockdown, a detachable front, consisting of a glazed frame, and a grooved column at each end thereof in which said frame Ais fitted; and glazed sides, each hinged to said frame at its ends and iitting into the grooved column, as herein set forth.
3. In aknockdown, dac., abase; afront with hinged sides detachably secured to the base;
said front consisting ofla glazed frame; and
columns at its ends fitted thereto, and having a vertical groove; glazed sides, hinged to the ends of the front frame, and being seated in the frame, and grooved columns; said sides having a column at their other end, and a vertical rib; a back with slotted ends engaging the rib at the sides; a top, and means for detachably securing the front and sides and back to the base and top as herein set forth.
4. A knockdown show-case, consisting of ra base, means for rigidly connecting the front and sides to said base; a front having hinged sides, detachable from the base; a back -consisting of a top bar, and slidable doors, detachably engaging said top bar, the base, and clips secured to the front and back, and engaging the edges of the top, as herein set forth.
5. A knockdown show-case, consisting of `a base; a front having a sash-frame, With corner-columns; side sash-frames hinged to the front; and with corner-columns at the rear; a back composed of sliding doors, and a top guide-har; the several parts, being, detaehable with means for securing them together, and a top, With clips secured to the top bar, and the columns, and engaging the edges of the top, as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
THOMAS H. BETTY.
