FRANZ F. PETERS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
PICTURE-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,328, dated January 18, 1-887.
Application filed Au gust 5, 1886.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ F. PETERS, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to picture-frames; and it consists in such an article made from a single piece of molding without waste, all the pieces necessary for such article being joined in such a manner that in their united positions they thoroughly match each other and form a frame wherein the corners are offsetted from the sides, as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front View of a picture- V frame, each having its respective ends cut on two opposite-angle faces, a b, of forty-five degrees each, the faces a of said parts meeting to form miter-joints, c, at the inner. corners of the frame. To each face of the angles 1), I miter-join a narrow piece, 0, of the molding, so cut that when thus joined its beads and grooves will match those of the corresponding main or side piece, A, but be at right angles thereto, thus forming an offset at the outer corners of the frame.
In order to square up the corners and complete the frame, I cut from the molding a series of right-angle triangle pieces, D, and miterjoin the same together in pairs to make blocks that have their outer edges in the form of a right angle, and which I miter-join to the pieces 0, that have been previously united to the parts A.
Then the several pieces of molding have been joined as above described, the beads and grooves thereon will all match and the parts 0 D of each corner unite at d to form a common center. In case the inner edge of the molding is concavethe common center of each corner will be in the form of a concave depression, and should such edge be plain the de- Serial No. 210,060. (No model.)
pression would correspond; but if said edge be convex these centers would be elevated.
In the manufacture of frames according to my invention it requires twenty pieces for each one thereof, these pieces being as follows: four main or side pieces, A, eight of the narrow ones, 0, and four each of the right-angle tri angle ones, D, all being joined together and held in place by any suitable means. These pieces are all cut from a single piece of molding without waste; or, in other words, I employ the rightangular pieces that are cut from the ends of the molding in the operation of making frames in the usual manner, these pieces being utilized to square up the offsetted corners, as above described.
By the construction. above described I not only am enabled to utilize all the molding, but 7 easily broken or bent, thereby marring or otherwise injuring the beauty and value of said frame.
IVhile I have described my invention as constructed from molding having its face provided with beads and grooves, it is obvious that any picture-frame molding may be as readily employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. A picture frame having the corners thereof offset from the sides, said corners and sides being of the same molding and so matched and joined as to form a continuous article, as set forth.
2. A picture-frame made from twenty pieces pieces provided at their respective ends with opposite-angle faces, a series of narrow pieces joined to the several outer faces of the main ones to form a right angle to each of the latter and a series of right-angle triangle pieces joined IOO 5 forth.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing I S. S. STOUT, have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in E. G. AsMUs.
