RICHARD OSCAR SOIIULZE, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
PICTORE-IFRAIVE,I
SPECFIATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,243, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed June 12,1896. Serial No. 595,307. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD Osons SGHULZE,residing at Providence,in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Picture-Frame, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to pictureframes and more particularly to an improved adjustable picture-trame, the object being to provide a frame which can be sold to the trade and which can be adjusted by the dealer to lit any-size glass or picture within a certain limit.
Another object is to provide an adjustable frame ot the kind described in which the end or corner piece will be highly ornamental and in the nature of a corner-molding.
Another object is to provide an improved means for adjusting the said ends or cornerpieces upon the sides of the frame proper 5 and a still further object is to provide a novel construction whereby it will be impossible for the parts to become disengaged as they are adjusted or at any time after they are adj usted. i
Another object is to provide an adjustable picture-frame in which the end or corner pieces can be used in connection with any style of molding; and a still further object is to provide an improved means for securing the glass,v picture, and packing within the frame.
lith these various objects in view this invention consists, essentially, in the employment oi' right-angled corner-pieces having the inner sides thereof shaped to it the molding of the frame, provided with means for scour ing the said cornerpieees to the frame, and also provided with means for securing the packing and glass within the frame.
My invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties ot' combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front view of a picture-frame constructed in accordance with my invention. Eig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. e is a rear view of the frame. Figs. 5 and G show details of construction.
In carrying ont my invention I employ four pieces of molding A of which a picture-frame is ordinarily constructed, and these pieces may be mitered at their ends, 0r they can be cut square, it' so desired; but in practiceI prefer to miter them, Aas shown most clearly in Fig. l. These side pieces'of the frame snugly t into the corner-pieces B, which are Vright-angular in shape and form the corners of the picture-frame, as most clearly shown in Fig. l, and these end or corner pieces have their forward faces ornamented in any suit able manner to provide a neat and attractive design which will harmonize with the molding of the side portions A. The corner-pieces B consist of the faceplates C, the top or outer pieces D, and the bottom or inner pieces E. The face, top, and bottom portions can be made separate and attached to each other in any suitable manner, or they can all be made in one piece, if so desired. The outer side piece D is adapted to rest upon the outer side of the framepiece A, while the inner side pieces E are adapted to snugly fit the inner sides of the frame-piece A, the inner face of the inner side pieces being shaped to correspend with the molding on the trame-piece, .as most clearly shown at F in Fig. 3.
The outer side pieces are slotted longitudinally at G, and through which pass a setscrew I-I, by means of which the corner and side pieces of the frame can be securely fastened after the parts have been once adj ust-ed. This set-screw, however, is not at all essential and may be dispensed with, it' so desired; but in practice I prefer to use same merely as a matter of safety.
Upon the rear face of the frame-piece A is secured a spring I, secured by means of a small screw, and at its free end is formed with a return bend or loop L, which presses against the back K of the frame, thereby securely holding the picture and glass against the shoulder of the frame. By forming the c0rner-piece with the inner and outer side pieces to snugly iit the inner or outer sides of the framepieces it is clear that the adjustment will always be easy and certain, and by having the interior faces oi' the inner side pieces of the corners shaped to correspond with the molding of the frame-pieces a neat and tight joint is obtained and the entire ef- IOO feet of the frame is ornamental, the corners having the appearance of heavy moldings to the frame.
By loosening the screws the frame can be enlarged or contracted, as desired, Within certain limits, and by having such a pictureframe any one can easily lit it upon a givensized picture and glass, and a great deal of time and labor is thereby saved, as every one is aware whata dilcult task it is to it a glass to a frame already made.
Having Ithus described iny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described picture-frame oonsistin g of the side pieces mitered at their ends, the right-angular corner-'pieces in which the side pieces slide, the corner-pieces oonsistin g of a front plate, the outer or side plate D and the inner plate E, said outer plate being provided with a longitudinal slot, and the inner plate having the face for the reception of the side pieces A, a set-screw passing through the slotted portion G, and into the said side pieces and securing means substantially as described for securing the picture and back and carried by the side pieces as setforth.
