WILLIAM BIKER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Design No. 4,372, dated September 27, 1870.
DESIGN FOR A BADGE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM ltucnn, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and original Design for a Badge; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of my new design for a badge.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new design for badges of freemasons, odd-fellows, or other associations, for displaying suitable insignia.
The invention consists in constructing the badge in form of a shield, A,ot' suitable outline, projecting from and beyond the face of an ornamental back, B. The latter is ornamented in suitable manner.
Upon the face of the shield are secured the insignia C O to be displayed.
By arranging the shield to project, as shown, it is made in imitation of a stone or cameo set on said back which is usually made of gold or other precious metal.
The. shield may also he made of metal, and can be struck iii one piece with the back, or made separate therefrom, if desired.
I am aware that badges with shields have already been in use, but in the same the shield receded from or was flush with the back, while in my badge the shield projects, as described, thereby producing an entirely different and apparently more artistic effect.
I claim as my invention The design for a badge, containing a shield, which projects from the back, as shown.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 5th day of September, 1870.
Witnesses: \VILLIAM BIKER.
Geo. W. MABEE, 1. B. MOSHER.
