DESIGN FOR BOOT AND SHOE-PATTERNS.
TheBchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the ams I, JOSEPH M. DUTTON, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Pattern for Boots al Slices, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in the patterns by which thc uppers of boots and shoes are made from a single piece of leather, the said patterns intermatching each other, so as to economize material, and prevent waste in cutting, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
Figure lis a representation of my improved pattern for a boot.
Figure 2, a view of several of the patterns intermatching each other, as applied to a side of leather from which the uppers are cut.
Figure 3 shows one of the patterns for ashoe.
In the drawing- A indicates the pattern by which the uppers of the boots are cut.
The portion b of the said pattern forms the leg of the boot;
c, the fore part of the foot; and
d, the heel or back part.
The uppers are cut from this pattern in a single piece, and are crimped in the proper form by any desired means of crimping, and sewed together in the back, thus requiring but a single seam.
The uppers are secured to the soleV in the usual manner.
The feet c of the patterns are made of' the peculiar form represented, so as to allow those portions to intermatch or fit between each other in cutting, as shown in fi 2.
B this means I am enabled to utilize nearly the entire side of leather from which these uppers are out with much less waste of material than is ordinarily the case in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and, there being but one seam, there is much less labor in sewing.
In cutting the uppers for shoes or gaiters, the portion b of the pattern, forming the leg, will be dispensed with, while the foot portions c d will be substantially the same.
It is obvious that the patterns may be varied, so as to adapt them to the different styles and forms of boots and shoes.
What I claim is- The design for patterns for boots and shoes, substantially as herein represented and set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: JOSEPH M. BUTTON.
G. A. DAVIS, W. H. MONTGOMERY.
