IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS .AND SHOES.

The Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it 'ma/ ll concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM LEATHE, of `Woburn, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements iu`Boots; and do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact a description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanyiug drawings, in which- ,y Figure`1 represents aboot embodying my improvements.

` The object of my invention is to produce a top for a boot, which shall combine the advantages of elastic gol-ings, with the convenience of buttons, or lacings.

My' improved boot-top" is capable of a better and neater t than .those which lace or button entirely, or

those which have only the elastic goring.

High-topped boots for ladies are apt to bind the leg vat the top, where lacing or buttons only are used,

while, if gering alone is employed, there is not a good fit at the ankle.

, My combination overcomes these objections.

'The construct-ion of. boots after my invention is simple, aud not particularly expensive.

p Myimprovemeuts are more especially adapted.y to

ladies boots, but may be applied to goods for gentlemeus wear.

In the drawings- A is the leg of a boot laced about two-thirds of the way up, that is, from m to m, While the remainder is buttoued with lappel D.

B is an elastic gering, set in one or both sides, as

desired. The boot may button or lace all the way,

but as shown, a hetterit is secured than would be by all buttons, while the convenience is greater by buttoning part way.

The method shown is attractive in form and coustruction-an essential feature in the manufacture of boots and shoes.

The construction shown admits of the display of variety in taste, both in material'and color, and boots 'of the style described really supply a want not heretofore met.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The device A B D m m, as shown in iig. 1, for the leg of a boot, as herein described.
