Description

(No Model.) I 1 A. M. ROLLING-ER.
' SHOE.
No, 556,801. Patented MM. 24,1396.
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE.
ALEXANDER M. BOLLINGER, OF XVILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,801, dated March 24, 1896.
Application flied September 3, 1895. Serial No. 561,339. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, ALEXANDER lll. BOL- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Villiamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Shoe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoes, and more especially to the construction of the upper, which is formed of a single blank cut in the required pattern and fashioned and crimped so as to secure the required shape.
The invention aims to provide a shoe of this general character which will have elastic gores or side pieces and which will secure ease and comfort to the wearer and result in economy of material and a saving of labor, all as will appear more fully hereininafter; and to these ends the improvement consists of the novel features which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a perspective View of a shoe embodying the essence of the present invention. Fig. 2 shows the pattern or blank from which the shoe is formed. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the Vamp and the counter-stiifener partially folded. Fig. et isa detail View similar to Fig. 3, showing the rear portion. and the front part of the blank folded about into the position which they will occupy in the completed shoe.
Similar reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in the various Views.
The pattern comprises the semi-elliptical portion l, which forms the combined vamp and quarters, the rear portion i), Which forms the heel and the upper rear part of the shoe, the counter or heel-stiifener 3, and the upper front portion a, which has attachment with the part 2 by means of a strip 5. The parts 2 and 3 are separated by means of a curved line, and are adapted to be folded about on the dotted line shown in Fig. 2. The front portion l is folded longitudinally about on the dot-ted line illustrated in the said Fig. 2, thereby bringing the heel-stiltener 3 into proper position, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. Vents 6 extend inward from the top edge of the part 2 and incline in opposite directions, so as to come upon opposite sides of the shoe after the parts have been properly folded, as shown most clearly in Fig. d, and these Vents receive the elastic gores or side pieces 7,Which latter are stitched along the edges thereof in the usual manner, as indicated in Fig. l. The strip S formed at the inner end of the part l comes inside of the fold of the upper front portion 4 and stiffens the latter and prevents Wrinkling of the slice and otherwise reinforces and maintains the proper shape of the shoe after the latter has been crimped into the desired form.
The blank having been cut into the form substantially as shown by the pattern illustrated in Fig. 2, is folded substantially as shown in Fig. et, and the edge portions, Where they meet the body of the blank, are stitched thereto, and the upper is crimped to give it the required finish. The elastic gores or side pieces 7 can be placed in position so as to close the Vents G prior to the folding of the blank or after the latter has been folded and the edge portions secured, as may be found most convenient. After the upper has been properly formed it is lined, soled, heeled, and otherwise iinished according to the practice of the manufacturer and the requirement of the trade. By having the part S fitting in the fold of the front portion 4 the latter is stiened and the shoe Will retain its shape for a much longer period than if the said part 8 were dispensed with, and the said part i Will not Wrinkle or break down.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A shoe of the character set forth, formed from a single blank of the pattern substantially as herein shown and comprising the front or Vamp portion l, the rear part 2, the latter having oppositely-disposed vents extending inwardly froin its top edge, and which Vents are closed by elastic gores or side pieces, the part 4, Which forms the upper front portion of the shoe, and the part S for reinforcing the part 4, substantially in the manner set forth for the purpose described.
2. A shoe having its upper constructed from a single blank out into the pattern substantially as herein set forth and comprising the front portion l, the rear portion 2, having the oppositely-disposed vents 6 extending inwardly therein from the top edge, the In testimony that I Claim the foregoing as part 4, forming the upper front portion, the my Own I have hereto afixed mysignature m heel-stiffener 3, and the reinforcing part 8, the presence of two Witnesses.
the latter entering the fold of the said part 4, ALEXANDER M. BOLLINGER. 5 and the vents G being closed by means of Vtnesses:
elastic gores or side pieces, substantially as N. A. HUGHES,
set forth. CHAS. E. HAYES.
