S. C. K. BOHM.
SHOE. No. 340,547. Patented Apr. 27, 1886.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
soREN e. K. BOHM, or SOUTH NATIGK, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,547, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed February 27, 1886. Serial No. 193,439.
To all whom it nwty concern:
Be it known that 1, SoREN O. K. BoI-IM, of South Natick, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompany ing drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a high-cut shoe of the class commonly termed Congress gaiters, in which the upper is formed substantially from a- Single piece and cut from the pattern to be herein described.
The invention consists in a higlrcut shoe composed of the usual bottom or sole and an upper attached thereto in usual manner, the upper (comprising the vamp and quarter pieces) being cut from a pattern having a slit extending inward from one edge for a short distance to form the top of the rear quarterpieces, and also having interiorly-cut-away portions to receive the usual goring, the top portion of one ofthe front quarter-pieces being cut independently and sewed to the remaining portion to thereby complete the upper.
Figure 1 shows a piece of leather cut from a pattern of like shape to form the upper of the shoe to be herein described, the independ ent piece to be attached to one of the fore quarter-pieces being shown as cut from the small piece cut out to receive the goring; and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a shoe embodying my invention.
The upper, (shown in Fig. 1,) cut from a suitable pattern to form a shoe commonly termed a Congress gaiter, comprises in one piece the vamp a, fore quarters, b b, and rear quarters; c a, suitable elongated openings, at d, being left between the front and rear quarters to receive the goring in the usual manner.
(N0 model.)
As will be seen, in order to cut the upper from a single piece of leather and leave the openings for the goring extending diagonally with relation to each other, only one full fore quarter piece can be cut integral with the vamp, and a small independent piece, 6, cut from some small pieces of material are sewed to the other fore quarter to complete the same. This small piece e may be cut from the piece of leather cut out at d, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper thus cut and having the small piece 6 sewed to one of the fore quarters and the goring inserted is or may be crimped in any usual manner. The heel-seam being thus formed, the upper is united to the bottom or sole B to thus form a completed shoe.
A shoe constructed from the pattern herein described can be made verycheaply, and when properly crimped has a very neat appearance, as well as being able to better withstand the wear brought upon it.
I claim The shoe herein described, consisting of the sole B and upper attached thereto, said upper comprising in a single piece the vamp a, front and rear quarter portions, b b c c, said upper having openings (1 (2 out between the said front and rear quarter-pieces, and an independent piece, c, attached to one of the fore quarter portions, as b, to complete the upper, all as set forth.
' In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Vitnesses:
ELLIOT PERRY, H. M. ROBBINS.
