IMPROVEMENT IN OPERA-BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,916, dated May 4, 1875; application filed May 23, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH T. HARPER, of the city of Charleston, in the county of Ooles and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Boot-Fronts; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the method of cutting hootfronts, wherebythe labor of crimping is entirely saved, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boot-leg embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the pattern after which the boot-front is out.
My invention is particularly designed for opera-boots, or such boots that have the upper made of different material, or, at least, of a separate piece from the leg.
The front of the leg is made in two pieces, AA, out according to the pattern shown in Fig. 2, with projections 12 b, and sewed together along the edge a c a. B represents the upper of the boot, cut in one piece with a central ornamental tongue, O, which covers the seam a of the leg-front in the bend and as high up as desired, the said tongue being sewed to both parts A A.
The boot-front cut in accordance with this pattern has a seam up the front covered, as described, by the tongue C.
By this method the labor of crimping is entirely saved, and a saving of material is also effected; and the boot when made fits the foot better and easier than when out in any other way, and is not liable to cramp the instep by shrinkage as it cut and crimped in the usual way.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the boot-front, cut in two pieces, A A, having curved extended bottoms b b, with the upper B, having the breakjointtongue 0, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1874:.
JOSEPH T. HARPER.
