UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
MORRIS VISE, OF NEIY YORK, N. ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND THOMAS KNIGHT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND E. T. FELLOW'S, OF ENGLE- VOOD, NEW JERSEY.
IVIANUFACTUR OF BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,142. dated July 5, 18827.
' Application filed May 5, 1887. Serial No. 937,237. (No model.) i
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS VISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of boots or shoes, as fully Io explained in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved shank-spring. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of a boot during the process of lasting. Fig. 3 is a similar View after the lasting has been completed. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal vertical section of a boot when finished. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section in the 2o plane :c x, Fig. 4.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter' A designates a shank-spring, which is made of sheet steel or of any other material suitable for the purpose,
and which is provided with .a series of holes,
a, and with a series of spikes, b, firmly connected to the shankspring.
B is the upper of a boot or shoe, and the shank portion of this upper is provided with 3o ilaps c c, which may eitherbe sewed on or cut out of one piece with the remainder of the upper. In order to last the upper, I place the same upon a last. Then I put the insole C upon the last and secure on this insole the shankspring A by means of tacks d, driven through been accomplished, I put on a leather shank,
D, which serves to cover the points of the spikes b, and then apply the outer sole, E, in the manner usually practiced. If the boot is provided with a welt, the outer sole can be sewed on before the last is removed; but if the boot has no welt it must be removed from the 5o last in order to sew on the outer sole by stitches passing through and through. In the example represented by the drawings a welt,
F, is secured to the upper and made to eX- tend round the toe part and as far as the shank on both sides of the upper, and the space between the inner edges of said welt is occupied by a felt sole, G. Inthis case the outer sole, E, can be sewed to the welt as far as the same extends without removing the upper from the last; but in order to sew the remaining portion of the outer sole to the upper the last must be removed.
The principal advantage of my invention is due to the spikes b of shank-spring A and to the shank-flaps c c of the upper. By drawing the shankiiiaps over the spikes b, the shank portion of the upper is rmly retained in position, and it is not liable to be thrown out of shape during the operation of securing the 7n outer sole to the upper.
YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As an improved article of manufacture, the shank-spring provided with projecting spikes, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the inner sole, C, of a shank-spring, A, having spikes b, and an upper, B, having shankflaps c c, substantially as described. 30
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.`
