DATUS 0. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
2'0 tall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DATUS 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Coiled Barbed FencelVires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a plan View of a brokenaway portion or section of a coiled barbed fence-wire, showing my new design; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
As, shown in the drawings, the said barbed fence-wire consists of a single coiled wire A, the coils of which are of extended configuration, having at intervals thereon fixed barbs, one of which is denoted by the letter B, the said barbs having their intermediate portions bent or coiled around enlargements in the wire, so as to leave prongs projecting in opposite directions therefrom, said enlarge= ments being formed so as to present a fiattened appearance or surface a, with lateral swells or protuberances b, which are embraced by the barbs, and the latter are thus fixed on the wire, as shown.
As will be seen, the leading or material features of my design reside in a single coiled wire, the coils whereof are of extended configuration, having at intervals barbs fixed thereon by bending or coiling their intermediate portions around enlargementsin the wire, so as to leave prongs projecting in 0pposite directions.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The design for a barbed fence-wire, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DATUS 6. SMITH. Witnesses:
FREDERICK H. BIRCH, W. H. LESLIE.
