UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DATUS C. SMITH, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,340, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed September 10, 1901. Serial No. 74,962- Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DATUS 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new, useful, and original Design for Barbed Fence-VVire, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is a side View, of a broken-away portion or section of a barbed fence-wire, showing my new design.
As shown in the drawings, the said barbed fence-wire consists of a single wire A, having at intervals therein a series or succession of waves or crimps, as shown at B, thus leaving intervals of plain or straight wire, as
20 shown at C, said wire having barbs fixed thereon at intervals, one of which barbs is denoted by the letter D, the said barbs being bent or coiled tightly around flattened spaces in the wire, so as to leave prongs projecting outwardly at an angle to the body of the wire,
said flattened spaces being formed so as to present a flattened appearance or surface a, with lateral swells or protuberances b, which are embraced by the barbs.
As will be seen, the leading or material features of my design reside in a single wire having at intervals therein aseries of waves or crimps and also having at intervals barbs fixed thereon with their intermediate portions bent or coiled around flattened spaces in the wire, so as to leave prongs projecting outwardly at an angle to the body of the wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, IS?- The design for a barbed fence-wire, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DATUS 0. SMITH.
