KNIFE SHABPENING STEEL (A umion and 1m. 25, 1-901 5] wuewfoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES E. MILES, OF POMONA, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO R. C. MIDDLETON, OF SAME PLACE.
DESlGN FOR A KNlFE-SHARPENING STEEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Design No. 34,470, dated May 7, 1901.
Application filed March 25,1901. Serial No. 52,873. Term of patent 7 years.
To Ml whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at P0- mona, in the county of Putnam and State of Florida, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Knife-Sharpening Steel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention has relation to a design for a rifle or knife-sharpening steel, the essential feature being a long tapering body of rounded form in cross-section and having its inner end portion provided with longitudinal cutting edges and of approximately saw form in transverse section and having the remaining portion roughened or draw-cut to provide innumerable cutting edges.
The design is shown most clearly in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rifle or knife-sharpening steel constructed in accordance with and embodying the essential features of the design. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the outer end portion of the steel. Fig. 3
is a transverse section of the inner end portion provided with the longitudinal cutting edges, showing the saw form.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by-the same reference characters.
The design comprises a body 1 of cylindrical form and tapering toward its outer end and of rounded form in cross-section. Longitudinal edges 2 extend in parallel relation around the inner end portions of the body and give to the latter a saw form in transverse section, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. These edges 2 extend lengthwise of the body a short distance from its inner or larger end and are formed at the intersection of straight and curved surfaces, the straight surfaces being radial and the curved surfaces conforming approximately to the curvature of the body in cross-section.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The design for a rifle or knife-sharpening steel, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. MILES.
