UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IOSEIII 'l. RICHARDS, Olj PHILADELPHIA, IFNNSYLYANIA.
DESIGN FOR A SPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,691, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed February 6. 1897. Serial No. 622,364 Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Spikes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
The leading featn re of my design for a spike is a slope on the back of the same, extending in a direct or straight line from the head toa point where it joins the main portion of said back, and a bulging head with curved sides, the rear portions of the latter converging to said slope, said sides extending in a rightlined direction and at a right angle to the vertical axis of the spike, the top of the slope on the back beginning at the upper line of the convergence of the rear portion of said sides.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a spike embodying my design. Fig. 2 represents a front view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a rear view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a top view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In the drawings, A designates the body of a spike, and B the head thereof, said body consisting of the front C, sides D, and back E, said head projecting laterally beyond said sides D, forming the shoulders F.
The back diverges in a direct right or straight line from the point G upwardly to the back 11 of the head, or, in other words, slopes in a direct right or straight line from the back of the head downwardiy to the point G,\vhere it joins the perpendicularor approximately perpendicular portion of the back.
The head B is doubly bulging and has curved sides, the rear portion of which latter converge to the slope of the back of the body, the top of said slope beginning with the upper line of the convergence of the sides of the head, said sides extending in a right-lined direction and at a right angle to the vertical axis of the spike.
What I claim is The design for a spike substantially as described and shown.
JOSEPH T. RICHARDS.
