Description

OR D270465 No. 27,465. Patented Aug. 3, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ElHVAltl) C. I LII'ICIIEH, OI INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TU 'IIlll INDIANAPOLIS CHAIN AND STAMPING COMPANY, OF SAVE PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A SIDE PLATE FOR BICYCLE-CHAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,465, dated August 3, 1897.
Application filed January '7, 1897. Serial No. 618,415. Term of patent 14 years.
n a whom it may (re/warn:
Be itknown that I, EDWARD (J. FLE'IUHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, Marion county, in the State of Indiana, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Side Plates for Pitch- Chains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part thereof, which illustrates, in
Figure 1, a side elevation, and in Fig. 2 a view in cross-section on line 3 3.
The two faces of the side plate m a y be plane and the ends are of the usual long approved form. The novelty resides in a plate having a form approximating the letter E-that is to say, a plate having the straight outer edge in connection with the peculiar outline of the inner edge, which is presented toward the sprocket-wheels when in use. The said inner edge presents two deep recesses, with a portion not recessed intervening, producing the effect of a spur extending centrally downward in a deeply-hollowed mid-length of the inner edge, said spur approximately terminating in the plane represented by a line intersectin g the inner edges of the end portions. The end of the central spur and the bottoms of the deep recess, one on each side thereof, are smoothly rounded.
In the drawings, A is the main body of the side plate; A'A, the rounded contour of the inner edge at each end. a a. are deep roundbottomed recesses or notches in the inner edge. A is a rounded spur intervening between the two notches a a and terminating approximately at a straight line intersecting the rounded contours.
The scalloped effect produced by the peculiar inner edge in connection with the straight back and rounded ends results in a side plate approximating in form a letter E, but with highly characteristic as well as attractive appearance.
I am aware thatheretofore a side plate has been devised in which the body proper remained intact, the spur projecting centrally and prominently from the inner edge and carrying a roller, the whole resulting in a plate suggesting in general outline a letter T. My design, however, differs from said prior configuration in that, and I do not claim that form. My plate approaches in appearance a letter E What I claim is" The design fora side plate for pitch-chains substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the invent-ion above set forth I aflix my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
EDIVARD C. FLETCHER.
