DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,504, dated May 19, 1896.
Application liled April ll,'l sue. Serial Nor 505,827: Term of patent 7 years.
To all vol mm it may contour/z:
lie it known that I, \VJLLIAM (I. CHDMAN, of. the City of 'lrovidtmee, in the county of Providence and State of lthode Island, have invented and n'odueed a new and original I) sign for lIandles ol,- Spoons, Forks, and Similar Artieles; and I hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exaet description of the same, referenee being had to To the aeeompanying drawings, forming part of this speei Iieation.
ll igure .l is a YIOW of the front or obverse side of the handle. Fig. l is a view of the reverse side of the handle.
The leading feature of my design consists in the peculiar and novel outline of the handle and in the ornamentation of the same.
In the drawings, A indicates the lower end of the handle; ill, the neck elf the handle; 0,
the plate, and I) the upper end of the handle. In outline the handle has, at its jlll'lOtlUll with the bowl of a spoon or the body of a fork, the spreading base 3, the handle proper common 0- ing at the bead r. The neck Bis very short,
its narrowest part at 5 being located at about one-eighth the length of the handle, and the length of the neck about one-fifth of the length of the handle. From the point 5 the width of the handle increases gradually to the upper 0 end 6 in a line so slightly curved that it practically follows the straight broken line 7 011 Fig. 2, curving slightly inward above the point 8 and turning abruptly inward at the upper end, terminating in a slightly-raiset'l I pyramidieal end, presenting to the eye the appearanee of a long tapering plate ol the handle terminating in a short neek with the graceful eurved outline of ('lreek simplieity. The ornamentation of the obverse and the re verse sides of the handle eonsist in the raised rounded marginal beads lo, terminating at the upper end of the handle in the serolls l l and the rzulially-extendi ng iyramidieal Greek ornament H. (In the reverse side the Junetion of the handle with the article to whieh it is attached is ornamental with the eonventional Greek ornament used in the Ionie and other orders and known as the honeysuckle ornament. In addition to the ornamentation common to the two sides of the handle the obverse or front ornamented by the two rows of: beads eonuneneing at the serolls ll ll and gradually diminishing in diameter. To the eye the handle, in outline and ornamentation, presents the severe graceful appearanee of Greek designs.
Having thus described my newly-designed handle, 1 elaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The design for the handle of spoons, forks and similar articles, herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
IVILLIAM (:ODMAN.
