;WITW'ESSL .UVVEN'TOR 72, WL'Q WMJ/ a." 4/ Wm 14 Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY RICHMOND, OFLOCKPORT, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A KNIFE AND FORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 18,455, dated July 10, 1888.
Application filed June 5, 1988. SeriaLNm 276.154.
Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, MARY RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Design for Combined Knife and Fork; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains totmake and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a. front view. Fig.2 is a side view.
The invention relates to a new and original design for a combined fork and knife; and it consists in the novel formation and outline of the device. Combined cutlery of this char acter has heretofore been. made showing forktines at one side and a cnttingblade constitoting the other side.
My design is to convey somewhat in outline the general idea of a spoon having tines distributed across its whole width.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the main portion, having the parallel edges a, sharpened as a knife. At the end b of the sharpened edges the lines cut inwardly, as shown, and extend outward to. form the four tines B. The opening between the two central tines extends to a point nearly central of the body, as at 0; but the openings between the respective outer tines and the adjacent center ones extend only to a point, (1, intermediate of the ends of the tines and the end b of the sharpened edges. The openings between the tines are wedge-shaped, as shown, for a portion of their way, and then continued with parallel edges. The main portion and the tines are in the same plane; but the handle I) isturned upwardly and extended outwardly above the plane of the main portion, after the fashion of the forks in general use.
The combined knife and fork described may be ornamented with embossed or engraved figures.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The design for a combined knife and fork herein shown and described, consisting of the main portion having the sharpened parallel edges, and the tines extending outwardly from the inwardly-cut ends b and separated by the wedgeshaped openings, the central opening extending to near the center of the main portion, the main portion and the tines being in the same plane and the handle above the plane thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY RICHMOND.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM RICHMOND, LIZZIE MoGILL.
