Description

FONT OF PRINTING TYPE.
9 .No. 17.699 Patented Sept. 6,1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LAUSCHKE, OF LAKE, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR M. BARNHART AND ALSON E. BARNHART, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,699, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed May 2, 1887. Serial No. 236,888. Term of patent \4 years.
To all whom, zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST LAUSCHKE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the town of Lake, county of Cook, and State 5 of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing- Types, of which the following is a specificatiou, reference being had the accompanying typographical illustration, forming a part :0 hereof.
The general character of the design appreaches the old style, is of medium weight, and consists of capitals, figures, points, dollar-mark, character 8:, and one end ornament.
15 The characteristics of the design are such as tend to produce the impression of having been made with a brush or camels-hair pencil, and the following are the more noticeable:
First. All terminals have a blunt appear" 20 ance. If eeriphs are employed, their points are blunted and their outlines inexact. Lines which have no ceriph or similar finish end in a blunt swell, as the lower end of G and J.
Second. Many lines normally perfectly straight depart from that character almost im- 25 perceptibly, as if made free hand, but with the attempt to make them straight. This is seen in both lines of A and in the vertical lines of F, H, M, N, P, R. \Vhen these are heavy lines, the irregularity consists merely of a very slight and almost imperceptible swell at some part of the line.
Third. The crossstrokes are at irregular heights, scarce any two agreeing precisely, as A, B, E, F, H, P. A 5
I claim The design for font of type herein shown and dcscribed, wherein the letters have the appearance of free-hand or brush work, having blunt terminals, irregularceriphs, veryslightly 4o inexact right lines, and cross-strokes atirregular heights, substantially as illustrated.
ERNST LAUSGHKE.
