To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALDO A. RICH Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Framingham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the followingv is a specification.

This invention relates to dies such as are commonly used in printing of many kinds, as stamps for impressing sealing wax and like purposes. Its object is to provide a die comprising a plurality of separable sections adapted to be manufactured in quantities and carried in stock, each section having thereon a complete letter or other character, either in intaglio or relief as desired, whereby a die having a plurality of characters may be readily assembled and made ready for use, thus eliminating the necessity of cutting a particular die to meet a. particular requirement.

As illustrative of my invention I have shown a stamp or die of the kind commonly employed to impress a sealing wax seal, but it will be understood that this embodiment of the invention is illustrative merely. The most desirable sealing wax stamps are commonly cut with a plurality of letters, usually the three initials of the user, and each such stamp or die has to be specially cut to order; for it is obviously a commercial impossibility for retailers to carry in stock stamps having all combinations of letters. The cutting of such a die or stamp is relatively expensive, so that many persons while desirous of such stamps, are forced to content themselves with the familiar single letter, stock, stamp which, whatever its artistic merit, necessarily lacks the individuality and personal association which is of the essence of such a stamp.

By the use of my invention these difliculties are eliminated and retail, dealers are enabled to carry in stock, and furnish on call at a relatively low price, stamps or dies mortises on the end sections.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate an embodiment of my invention,-

Figure 1 is a face view of a stamp or die embodying the invention;

My improved die consists of a plurality of separable sections A, each having a complete character thereon, which may be in intaglio or relief, as desired, or as the intended use requires. In the die shown, three such sections are employed, each having a complete letter in intaglio, the said sections bemg dove-tailed, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, with the tenons on the center section and the -While this means of connecting the sections is preferred, it will be understood that said sections may be united by any suitable complemental connecting means located on their juxtaposed edges.

Each section A is provided upon its top face with a transverse recess B, the marginal edges of said recesses being in register when the sections are assembled. In the transverse recess thus provided is a locking bar 0 which extends from end to end of said recess and is flush with the top face of the die. The central die section has an aperture D preferably screw-threaded as shown, and the bar C has an aperture registering with said die aperture D. Effectively to conceal the joints between the die sections, it may be desirable under some conditions of use to provide a pattern upon the working face of the die, the joints between said sections forming an element of the pattern. It will, I believe, be clear that by the use of my invention above described dealers are use they need. carry in stock but a, relatively small number. of die sections, which can readily be assembled to make a particular die and as readily disassembled upon completion of the work, thus eliminating the necessity for the cutting of special dies which become useless upon completion of the particular work for which they were made.

I claim:

1. A die comprising separable interlocking sections and unitary means wholly disposed upon the top face of the die to lock all of said sections against relative movement.

I 2. A die comprising separable interlocking sections and means extending across all of the sections and wholly disposed upon the top face of the die to lock said sections against relative movement.

3. A die comprising separable. sections having complemental locking means on their juxtaposed edges only, and means wholly disposed on the top face of the die to lock said sections against relative movement.

4. A die comprising three separable sections, the center section havlng locking means on its opposite side edges, and the end sections having complemental locking means upon one edge only, and means wholly dis-' posed on the top face ofthe die to lock said sections against relative movement.

5. A die comprising separable sections,

and means to lock said sections against relative movement comprising a unitary transverse locking bar disposed upon the top face thereof.

6. A die comprising separable interlocking sections having a transverse recess in their top faces, and means to lock said sections against relative movement comprising a locking bar in said recess.

7. A die comprising separable interlocking sections having a transverse recess in their top faces, and means to lock said sections against relative movement comprising a locking bar in said recess, and means engaging said bar to retain it in locking position.

8. A die comprising separable interlocking sections, and means to lock said sections against relative movement comprising a transverse locking bar, and means extending through said bar into a die section to retain said bar in locking position.

9. A die comprising separable interlocking sections, one of said sections having a screw-threaded aperture, a transverse locking bar to lock said sections against relative movement, and a screw extending through said bar into said aperture to retain said bar in locking position.

10. A die comprising separable interlocking sections havin a transverse recess, and means to lock said sections against relative-movement comprising a locking bar 1n said recess, and means extending through said bar into a die section to retain said bar in locking position.

11. A die comprising separable interlocking sections having a transverse recess, a locking bar in said recess, and a handle having a projection extending through said bar into a die section to retain said bar in locking position.
