Description

UNITED STATES'PATENT OFFICE.
PETER H. BOWERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING WALL-PAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 76,152, dated March 31, 1868.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER H. BOWERS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Wall-Papers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of my invention.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of natural wood of various kinds as types I from which to print wall-papers.
The object of the present invention is, by using the natural wood as a type, to produce a more artistic article of wall-paper than has heretofore been produced, and one in which the natural appearance of the wood used is perfectly and faithfully depicted.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
I take thin strips of wood, of various kinds, from which I desire to print the wall-papers, and mount them upon blocks of wood, or any suitable substance; or I saw out from wood blocks of suflicient height to allow an impression to be taken from them when placed in the press. The wood mounted upon the blocks, or the sawed-out blocks themselves, I then thoroughly cleanse with a mild alkaline solution, so as to remove the softer substance filling the pores of the wood. The blocks are then placed in the ordinary machine for printing wall-paper, are properly inked, and, the paper being fed into the machine, any number of impressions may be taken.
As previously stated, the result is the production of a wall-paper in which the grain of the wood used as a type is perfectly reproduced, and the expense attendant upon the same does not exceed the cost of wallpaper printed in the usual manner, while a high artistic character is given to the work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the printing of wall-papers, the use or employment of natural wood, properly prepared, as a type from which to print.
PETER H. BOWERS.
