Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN B. HUNTOON, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT lN RELIEF-PLATES FOR PRINTING, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,204, dated May 11, 1875; application filled February 10, 1875.
The invention consists in obtaining relief impressions from ordinary type on thin sheets of metal by means of an ordinary printing press, and afterward filling in a backing to said metal sheets, as hereinafter specified.
The matter which it is desired to obtain in relief is put on any ordinary printing-press, in the usual manner, and a piece of thin sheet metal, as brass, run through the press, in pre: cisely the same manner as an ordinary sheet of paper would be were it to be printed. A
good clear imprint will be obtained, and the metal may then be trimmed to a proper size,
and is backed up or filled with ordinary hy:
dranlic cement, which may have added to it sufficient lime to destroy its quick-setting properties, as it is necessary that it should remain plastic long enough to allow of its being rubbed smooth. This backing is then covered with cambric, or other suitable cloth, glued or 0th erwise fixed thereon, so that it may present an even finished appearance.
What I claim is-- 1. The herein-described method of produc-- ing relief-plates, consisting in striking up a: sheet-metal face, filling the back of the same, with cement, and then attaching a fabric to; the back thereof, substantially as specified.
2. As an article of manufacture, a printing or, relief plate composed of a sheet-metal face, cement filling, and cloth backing, constructed and arranged substantially as shown.
BENJAMIN B. HUNTOON.
